Formalists, functionalists, nativists and behaviourists continue to collide; variationists, structuralists, poststructuralists and typologists continue to choose sides. Linguistics and its many branches seem destined for a future of increasing fragmentation. Even would-be unifying movements such as Cognitive Linguistics and Integrational Linguistics come to be pitted against each other. Following a review of the 20th century history and current state of the art in Peircean linguistics with these problems in mind, this chapter discusses the importance of architectonic reasoning, arguing that the unification of linguistics is not only possible but possible in a way that fosters and enhances diverse perspectives. This, however, requires the resituation of linguistics within a general semiotic—one already well worked out by C. S. Peirce. Building on the work of Anttila, Shapiro, Nöth and others, the chapter illustrates the leverage that Peircean architectonic thinking affords for the unification of linguistics across a broad cross-section of language theory and linguistic praxis—from language evolution and language ontology to language acquisition and usage linguistics, from language varieties and linguistic performance to linguistic research design and language data analysis.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Jamin Pelkey"}],"contributor":[],"dateCreated":"2020-02-07","datePublished":"2019-01-01","headline":"Peircean Semiotic for Language and Linguistics","identifier":{"@type":"PropertyValue","propertyID":"DOI","value":"10.5040/9781350076143.ch-14"},"image":"https://attachments.academia-assets.com/62154063/thumbnails/1.jpg","inLanguage":"en","keywords":["History of Linguistics","Semiotics","Philosophy Of Language","Languages and Linguistics","Charles S. In this paper, I would like to argue against this general polarization of the semiotic discipline. I focus on compatibilities between Lucien Tesnière's syntactic theory (verbal valency) and Peirce's logic of relatives. My main argument is that structural linguistics is not necessarily dyadic, and that Peirce's sign doctrine is perfectly structural. To define the structural approach in Peirce, I analyze the notions of form (structure) and substance in Hjelmslev and Peirce. The aim of my argument is to contribute to attempts to introduce Peirce's theory to the field of linguistics in the hope that such an integration will be beneficiary for general linguistics. To extend and support my argument, I provide some examples from biology where Peirce's theory has been applied. I demonstrate an analogy between the biological structures of proteins and the structure of a sentence with Peirce's own writings. I consequently introduce Peirce as the first structural semiologist and as the first biolinguist.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Structural semiology, Peirce, and biolinguistics","attachmentId":105578436,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/106359520/Structural_semiology_Peirce_and_biolinguistics","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/106359520/Structural_semiology_Peirce_and_biolinguistics"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="5721950" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/5721950/Agency_Structure_and_Realism_in_Language_and_Linguistics">Agency, Structure and Realism in Language and Linguistics</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="1180606" href="https://brighton.academia.edu/CraigJordanBaker">Craig Jordan-Baker</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Agency, Structure and Realism in Language and Linguistics","attachmentId":32761463,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/5721950/Agency_Structure_and_Realism_in_Language_and_Linguistics","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/5721950/Agency_Structure_and_Realism_in_Language_and_Linguistics"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="209581" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/209581/Abstractions_and_idealisations_The_construction_of_modern_linguistics">Abstractions and idealisations: The construction of modern linguistics</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="107182" href="https://uva.academia.edu/MartinStokhof">Martin Stokhof</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="163483" href="https://uva.academia.edu/MichielvanLambalgen">Michiel van Lambalgen</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Abstractions and idealisations: The construction of modern linguistics","attachmentId":11260615,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/209581/Abstractions_and_idealisations_The_construction_of_modern_linguistics","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/209581/Abstractions_and_idealisations_The_construction_of_modern_linguistics"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="5557910" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/5557910/Linguistics_and_philosophy_2016_pre_print_">Linguistics and philosophy (2016 pre-print)</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="112996" href="https://cambridge.academia.edu/KasiaJaszczolt">Kasia Jaszczolt</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Final version available in: K. With this in view, I first present a thumbnail history of the iconicity movement during the years 1965 to 1985, for it seems to me that the evolution discernible within the movement over these particular decades amply illustrates the issues at stake; I then review what I feel to be the most important aspects of Peirce's semiotics for iconicity theory; finally, I attempt to illustrate my position through an analysis of a fundamental division in the English verb phrase. My purpose will be to suggest that as practiced by its major exponents, iconicity theory has taken a singularly un-Peircean turn, and to show why it might benefit from a return to orthodoxy.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Iconicity and Inference: Peirce's Logic and Language Research","attachmentId":66531402,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/47439691/Iconicity_and_Inference_Peirces_Logic_and_Language_Research","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/47439691/Iconicity_and_Inference_Peirces_Logic_and_Language_Research"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="121797330" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/121797330/New_directions_in_linguistics_and_semiotics">New directions in linguistics and semiotics</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="7715034" href="https://unipv.academia.edu/paoloramat">paolo ramat</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Journal of Pragmatics, 1987</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"New directions in linguistics and semiotics","attachmentId":116594472,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/121797330/New_directions_in_linguistics_and_semiotics","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/121797330/New_directions_in_linguistics_and_semiotics"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="109209503" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/109209503/The_Representation_of_Semiotic_Structures_in_Language">The Representation of Semiotic Structures in Language</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="18189255" href="https://independent.academia.edu/StevenBonta">Steven C Bonta</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Language and Semiotic Studies, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Based on previous published work on (Mandarin) Chinese, and following a discussion of the properties of the Peircean ontological Categories Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness (as well as their "degenerate" or derivative versions) and their applicability to sign systems, in general, I examine evidence for paradigmatic and syntagmatic structuring, conditioned by these Categories, in Mandarin Chinese, Sora, Tamil, and Sanskrit, languages chosen because of the typological divergence amongst them, and because of the author's familiarity with them and with their respective cultural milieus. The paradigmatic and syntagmatic structures identified arise in the presence of what I term positive and negative conditioning constraints arising from the Categories themselves, and which are shown to operate at three different levels in language, the morphosyntactic, the lexical, and the phonological. Because of this, a methodology grounded in Peircean semiotic structures is shown to have the explanatory potential to allow for a unified model of language structure, in general.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Representation of Semiotic Structures in Language","attachmentId":107402025,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/109209503/The_Representation_of_Semiotic_Structures_in_Language","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/109209503/The_Representation_of_Semiotic_Structures_in_Language"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":62154063,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":62154063,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_62154063" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
