Often, they occur at a point in time when new developments and shifting foci begin to stretch the boundaries of a Kuhnian paradigm and perhaps start calling into question fundamental assumptions of the discipline itself. Linguistics has grown tremendously over the course of the last century, with many innovative approaches pushing the discipline in new directions, inevitably and repeatedly redefining what counts as linguistics. The collection of five reflective essays by eminent scholars of language in this Special Issue is therefore not only timely but also manifests the many different faces of linguistics today. Ever since the 1950s, generative grammar shifted the focus of linguistic research onto the systems of linguistic knowledge possessed by individual speakers, and onto the "Language Faculty," the species-specific capacity to master and use a natural language (Chomsky 1959). In this perspective, language is a natural object, a component of the human mind, physically represented in the brain and part of the biological endowment of the species. Within such guidelines, linguistics is part of individual psychology and of the cognitive sciences; its ultimate aim is to characterize a central component of human nature, defined in a biological setting. The idea of focusing on the Language Faculty was not new; it had its roots in the classical rationalist perspective of studying language as a "mirror of the mind," as a domain offering a privileged access to the study of human cognition. discussions in recent years have kept alive the debate on the definition of applied linguistics. The range of the debate covers both ends of the spectrum of applied linguistic work: the philosophical and the practical. This paper attempts to put a response to such (re-)considerations into an interpretative framework, and considers the conception of the discipline as it has evolved over five generations of applied linguistics. Often one individual or a small group of original minds has founded a tradition which has continued to mould approaches to language in the university or the nation in which that tradition began; between adherents of different traditions there has usually been relatively limited contact. Hence this book. It cannot fail to be an advantage to any student of linguistics (whether he is a 'student' in the formal or the amateur sense) to learn something of the ideas that have been current in traditions other than the one with which he is most familiar. This is not only because some of the ideas he has been taught as received truth are likely to be wrong (although I do believe that there are fundamental errors in the thinking of the most fashionable contemporary linguistic school, and I hope this book may encourage questioning of those points). In many cases one school has directed its attention to issues which simply have not been considered by another school, so that one can gain by studying other orthodoxies without necessarily rejecting any elements of one's own.
