The process involves a biologist entering the body, cutting into its flesh and taking away a part of it in order to return with an improvement. and machines has led to the development of new art practices in parallel with technological advances in the fields of biology, medicine and computing. This paper examines the human body in art contexts where biotechnology plays a relevant role in the generation of new conceptualizations around the human body topic. Thus, re-contextualized in social and cultural spheres and technical terms, the body will become redesigned, revamped, or augmented through the use of technological advances ranging from plastic surgery to robotic prosthetics. The human body is our vehicle of direct interaction with the environment. Its modification, alteration or expansion implies a redefinition of the existing limits between our corporality and the environment itself. Not only in the physical sense, but metaphysical and social. Hence, the introduced artists and strategies blur these limits and establish new relations through the body as a physical and social entity. As scholars begin to position bodies centrally in the sociology of health and illness, those working in the field of biomedicine continue to devise ways to transform the boundaries of these bodies. Bodies have become more malleable as they become more healthy and less sick or vice versa. While health and illness are terms that are culturally and socially defined, all cultures have known concepts of these terms. These vary from culture to culture according to how sick and healthy bodies become visible and, more importantly, the extent and range of the scopic drive (Braidotti 1994), which makes these bodies visible. In a sense, there is a new closeness to the physical body, as the ways of shaping and reshaping the body out of personal wishes has increased. This can be seen in body ornaments (clothes and jewelleries, but also piercing and tattooing) and body modifications (brace, plastic surgery, doping, smart drugs, and so on). And in-between phenomena such as carving, cutting, branding, and so on. The other side of this phenomena, is most likely an increased awareness of the self, of who you are, and possibly even what it is to be human. It is therefore reasonable to say, that the body has become a marketplace, a biological mass, that with the aid of different techniques can be modified, updated, and reshaped. Even though there are historical parallels in how to manipulate, or ornamenting, the body, what is new, is the extent of these phenomena, and more importantly: it is expressions that are created in contemporary society, rather than being some kind of rites de passage, or established cultural norms. Firstly, it examines how bodily symbolism is part of a process of connecting and defining the self and the community. The easiest way to do this is comparatively, contrasting forms of embodiment in different contexts from tribalism to postmodern capitalism. This then allows us to broach a second theme: is the reconstitution of our lived senses of our bodies in contemporary western society stripping the body of its capacity to enrich the social connectedness of people? The current sense of an image-dictated, shapable body; the current debates over whether or not advances in medical technology are an unproblematic liberation from the constraints of our mortal bodies; and recent developments in feminist attitudes to embodiment will be considered to reveal the tensions and contradictions in the textured modem/postmodern constitution of the body. Our overriding concern is to argue through the need for alternative practices of human interrelation which attempt to bind considerations about the value or otherwise of the various modes of disembodied extension within a framework which instantiates in practice the condensed and complex limitations on embodiment entailed in face-to-face relations. This is not an argument for a return to kinship-based or close-knit parochial communities. This occasion was one of the motivations for presenting this reflection on Bacon and his legacy 16 years after his death. The exhibition demonstrated Bacon's technical ability to capture the nuances of flesh in a remarkably visceral way and consolidated his position as one of the greatest painters of the human body. In this article I want to concentrate on the cultural dimensions of Bacon's Weltanschauung. Thinking through these practices can tell us something of the concerns and complexities of the people who practice them. This collection addresses the body as a technical apparatus of aesthetic performance and ethical commitments. Each of the papers work through intrusions in and extensions out of the body in order to understand the sociocultural genesis of the body as its boundaries are negotiated, contested, and blurred. Ethnographic accounts exploring intrusions into the body such as artful body modifications, medical interventions, and cyborgian movements of enhancement are taken alongside extensions out of the body into institutional, architectural, and ecological environments. In so doing, this short collection of papers seeks to understand how people partner themselves with techniques and technologies of and on the body to form new subjectivities in their aesthetic engagement with internal and external realities. It furthermore helps to fill a need within interdisciplinary discussions of the body to think through the human body as a site of technical engagement enmeshed within complex negotiations of value and meta-values. In this way it defines these delimitations of the body as complex bioethical issues. This special issue is the result of two symposia: one held at University College London in July 2015; the other, in Denver, Colorado as part of the programme of the American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting in December 2015. As such, this collection is the product of a collaborative effort on the part of the authors and associated colleagues (most notably David Jeevendrampillai, with whom we organized the original July symposium). Together we have sought to understand how people ally themselves with technology, render the body a sited technology, use bodily techniques, and extend themselves within medical, urban, and religious environments to form new subjectivities.
