ds2-5-body-sm">A major part of the global advertising effort today focuses on child consumers, both in their own right and because it is believed that consumption behaviours that characterise the adult life can be created in childhood. Critics of advertising see this as evidence of the ‘corporate construction of childhood’ - the predatory grooming and coaching of children for commercial ends. Children are socialized from birth to be ‘consuming subjects’. But although the commercialisation of childhood has increased over time, the modern sense of what a child is developed within an increasingly market based society and so, to some extent, has always been moulded by commercial pressures. What has been called the commercial 'invasion' hypothesis is an overly simple approach to the story of the child in the marketplace and the history of children and advertising.</p><div
