This paper investigates five underlying phonemic contexts involving /t/, including singleton /t/ and four different underlying /C+t/ sequences that typically surface as [t:], by analyzing how durational and formant differences vary depending on the presence and identity of the preceding underlying consonant. Following the acoustic and statistical analyses of 444 instances of /ˈeta/, /ˈesta/, /ˈekta/, /ˈepta/ and /ˈeksta/, a Discriminant Function Analysis shows that differences in the total duration of /t/ and in the duration of the closure of /t/ are the strongest cues to distinguishing singletons from geminated consonants, with 91.9% and 90.6% accurate classifications, respectively. Cues indicating which specific consonants have been deleted before /t/ are much less robust and more varied in nature. It is unclear, however, whether this outcome is due to different compensation strategies in each case or whether they are affected by some kind of underlying coarticulatory effect. Given that gemination in this language variety is the result of regular /C1C2/ to [Cː] assimilation, and that its underlying phonemic status has not been demonstrated, Eastern Andalusian Spanish is unusual amongst languages studied with respect to gemination, making this study typologically interesting.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Alfredo Herrero de A journal on variation of Romance and Iberian languages, 2018

This paper takes a series of lenition phenomena from Gran Canarian Spanish as a point of departure to discuss the influence of phonology on the phonetics component. Based on phonetic and phonological data, it can be concluded that a blocking effect ensues between the process of coda deletion and post-vocalic voicing, giving rise to phonetic opacity. Against the assumption that the latter process is phonological in nature, acoustic data suggest that it is highly gradient, coarticulatory and variable, in which case it is inexplicable why it is blocked by phonological segment deletion. The proposed solution set forth in this paper is that the phonetic component has access to deep structure beyond featural specifications of sounds. What is more, evidence from prosody indicates that structural information concerning prosodic boundaries is also transposed into phonetics and influences production. Thus, the type and amount of information computed at the phonetics-phonology interface needs to be revised and supplemented by turbid structures in order to account for surface variability and both inter-and intra-speaker differences.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Spanish non-continuants at the phonology-phonetics interface","attachmentId":61078437,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/40796104/Spanish_non_continuants_at_the_phonology_phonetics_interface","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Phonetics and Phonology of Geminate Consonants
Donna Erickson

Oxford Scholarship Online, 2017

Geminate consonants, also known as long consonants, appear in many languages in the world, and how they contrast with their short counterparts, or singletons (e.g. /tt/ vs. /t/), is an important topic that features in most linguistics and phonology textbooks. However, neither their phonetic manifestation nor their phonological nature is fully understood, much less their cross-linguistic similarities and differences. As the first volume specifically devoted to the phonetics and phonology of geminate consonants, this book aims to bring together novel, original data and analyses concerning many individual languages in different parts of the world, to present a wide range of perspectives for the study of phonological contrasts in general by introducing various experimental (acoustic, perceptual, physiological, and electrophysiological) and non-experimental methodologies, and to discuss phonological contrasts in a wider context than is generally considered by looking also at the behaviou...

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Phonetics and Phonology of Geminate Consonants","attachmentId":87989006,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/82209854/The_Phonetics_and_Phonology_of_Geminate_Consonants","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Does /e/ split into four vowel phonemes in Western Almeria? However, there is no consensus on the effects that consonant deletion has on surrounding vowels. Researchers of EAS, such as Mondejar Cumpian (1979), have distinguished between two types of vowels in this variety of Spanish: vowels in coda position and vowels followed by a deleted consonant. However despite the neutralisation of most consonants in coda position in EAS, phonemic value has only been given to vowels preceding deleted /s/, as in Salvador Caja (1950) and Carlson (2012). This paper expands on the traditional view on vowel doubling in EAS and shows evidence of a more complex phenomenon previously undescribed: the division of /e/ into different phonemes as a result of different consonant deletion. Likewise, a perception experiment confirms that Eastern Andalusian speakers can identify whether or not /u/ is followed by an underlying /-s/, /-r/, or /-θ/; however, they cannot identify the deleted consonant.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The vowel /u/ before deleted word-final /s/, /r/, and /θ/ in Eastern Andalusian Spanish","attachmentId":87107242,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/80868777/The_vowel_u_before_deleted_word_final_s_r_and_%CE%B8_in_Eastern_Andalusian_Spanish","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Effects of prosodic and segmental context on /g/-lenition in Spanish
Jose Ignacio Hualde

1999

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Effects of prosodic and segmental context on /g/-lenition in Spanish","attachmentId":48214825,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8099918/Effects_of_prosodic_and_segmental_context_on_g_lenition_in_Spanish","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Acoustic phonetics: Notes on the evolution of /ti̯, ki̯ / yod contexts in Spanish
Assumpció Rost Bagudanch

Estudios de Fonética Experimental, 132, 169-194, 2023

The explanation for the evolution of /ti̯ / and /ki̯ / yod contexts has been based on articulatory reasons. The results show that the allophones for /t/ and /k/ display acoustic similarities regarding point of articulation cues, which could explain misperceptions. It is documented that there is a growing tendency for speakers of this variety to realize /st/ clusters not only with postaspiration (pasta [pát̪ h a]) rather than preaspiration (pasta [páht̪a]), but also with affrication (pasta [pát̪ s a]). In this study, we present evidence of postaspiration and affrication beyond /st/ clusters, i.e., also in stop + /t/ clusters, as detected auditorily in recorded background interviews with Western Andalusian Spanish speakers. Further acoustic analyses of duration, zero crossing rate, and center of gravity of the friction segment in the tokens corroborated the existence of postaspiration and affrication in both contexts. However, while postaspirated tokens were similar in all parameters for both /st/ and /Ct/ clusters, affricated tokens presented higher frequency and concentration of energy in /Ct/ clusters. Results show a variety of patterns in constriction degree realization, ranging from full occlusion to wide lenition for both consonants in the sequence. In addition, Pearson correlation coefficients show strong positive correlations between the constriction degrees of the consonants in the sequences, especially when they are both voiced stops, but also in stop+nasal combinations.
