archaeological discussions of religion. However, although the word ‘sacred’ is an adjective, it often appears as ‘The Sacred’, and in this way, is found masquerading as a noun. I use this grammatical distinction to demonstrate how the notion of sacrality is currently flawed, but nonetheless, can be transformed into a useful cross-cultural, and therefore archaeological term if rehabilitated. My argument rests on the idea that ‘the sacred’ can be more usefully viewed as: the quality of being set aside, marked off, or forbidden, rather than some holy essence of spiritual power. This revised meaning is well suited to archaeology because features like boundaries, walls, ditches and other forms of physical barriers/borders are visible in the material record. Although it is a simple idea, it is also a powerful one because social relations are both represented by and reproduced in spatial relations (Moore 1996: ix). That is, acts of defining a space using exclusion and inclusion are also strategies of social construction. I use the example of Thracian tumuli to show that by applying a sociological notion of sacrality to understanding them, it can be suggested that the main purpose of these sites may not have been to house the dead, but they were rather a generic form of marking off an area or feature as sacred, that is, set-apart or forbidden. It is demonstrated that the practice of actively collecting ancient objects is specifically Iron Age, and not shown clearly by the later Bronze Age hoard evidence. This pattern is then linked to the ethnographic record, where ancient objects are commonly thought to be closely associated with powerful supernatural human-like beings that are either feared or venerated. Foreign exotica and objects displaying intricate craftsmanship are often considered in a similar manner as ancient objects are they are also only producible outside of the current cultural context. These types of exotic objects are also attested more in the Iron Age compared to the later Bronze Age. This suggests that supernatural objects were socially employed in a different way during the Iron Age compared to the later Bronze Age. These largely personal, private objects—from medals depicting saints to rosaries and reliquaries—illustrate the vibrant spiritual world inhabited by residents of the seventeenth- through twentieth-century Middle Atlantic region. Contextual analysis of undisturbed artifacts reveals that they were treated with reverence, although not always in ways reflecting orthodox Catholicism. Moreover, analysis shows that the social context of their use among people of European, African, and Native American descent was unmistakably different. These objects of metal, wood, bone, clay, glass, and stone played pivotal roles in the way that American Catholics connected with the supernatural. Through sacramental objects, the archaeological record is populated with angels, saints, and materials used to connect with Christ and the Virgin Mary. In particular, the materials from which these objects were made—and not simply their symbolism—gave them power. While the concept is largely subjective, it is primarily associated in Western thought with religious relics, mainly comprised of sacralised human remains. Meanwhile, the word ‘relic’ has also become synonymous with the remains of past cultures, especially with those of a material nature.
