In games, that might mean your health, or how much ammo you have, whether or not you are in some special mode, odr how much time has elapsed.

The HUD has implication for non-games. In the case the current project, ambient information would be progress through the survey, ability to toggle between text only and sign language, which signer, theme customization, and font size. There is more. Lots more. This is important stuff...but not the main stuff.

So in interaction and interface design we have ambient information. It is designed to be there both persistent and in the periphery. Ideally it is very much in the periphery so it doesn’t clutter the desired bits. (BTW, I resent that Verizon takes up valuable cell phone display real estate to put in their name.)

What are the implications when one is designing for a segment of the population that has no peripheral vision? Before you make any aural suggestions, I shall inform you that the target population that I need to address would be a segment of the deaf population with something called Usher’s syndrome which is a pairing of deafness with retinitis pigmentosa...a progressive tunnelling of vision.

It’s an interesting problem. The fixes one normally suggests for anyone with a vision impairment is to make things larger and with higher contrast. This is not the case for someone with tunnel vision. At the extreme end, the visual area may be the equivalent of looking through a straw. And even what is visible through the straw is not certain. I got some anecdotal information that too much contrast is actually detrimental to seeing. I am not finding much online. I think my best recourse is to talk to someone with Ushers to find out what works best for them.

Related links:
http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060203/wilson_01.shtml
http://www.ambientdevices.com/cat/science.html
http://www.wired.com/news/columns/0,70387-0.html?tw=rss.index
http://www.jan.wvu.edu/media/Sight.html

Posted 06/12/2006
(0) Comments • Permalink•

shoulda done this years ago

Rochester is not far from a string of lakes that fan downward in the middle of the state. These lakes are called the finger lakes and are home to many a winery.

Best show: Bully Hill. There is a decided cult of personality around Walter S. Taylor, and his story is a good one. His labels are great hand drawn illustrations. The wine is okay.

What I discovered is that wines are varied and when given the opportunity to compare them next to one another, it’s a lovely thing.

I also discovered while some wines did it for me, and others did not, none of the wine compared to the meade (honey wine) I had at the Earle Estates Meadery. I think I have found my alcohol vehicle of choice. Traditional meade is a heavy thing - not bad, but contemporary meade is light in texture. This particular meadery combines different fruit wines with their meade in varied proportions.

External memory note...putting it down here so I don’t forget. My favorites at Earle Estate were:

Honey Mead - contemporary semi-dry

Cream Apricot - 30% Apricot wine / 70% Honey Mead

Strawberry Shadows - 30% Strawberry wine / 70% Mead

Honey Mead - contemporary semi-sweet- silver medal

There were more to taste. It cost a buck to taste 6 different wines. That was pretty much the going rate at the various wineries we visited. What a good day. When mom and dad visit again, this is what we need to do.

Posted 06/11/2006
(2) Comments • Permalink•

gone sloshing

Today’s agenda:
Wine tasting around the (or a) finger lake(s).

Posted 06/10/2006
(0) Comments • Permalink•

this is good

So this summer, I get to walk downstairs to the dining table and work from there.
