Peter Hauser asked that we include it in another conference in October, “Week of Discussion” in which the theme will be “Women”. (Pretty open ended - most apropos).

Jaunita wondered whether we could extend it? Yes. Absolutely.

In the talk back session following the performance there were some very good questions. But Betsy asked a very interesting one, “Given the conscious effort to make the technology subordinate to the human aspect of the piece, would you consider exchanging the focus? And how would you do it?”

Juanita, I am certain would create more fantastic movement. On our end, Michelle and I would have to make clear the causal relationship between event triggers and the events on stage (ie. light painting causes video reveal). A non-trivial matter is to make events that have interest beyond the novelty of how-did-they-do-that?

The underlying text bedded the whole piece. Those were blog entries. The resulting question is do I write something specific for the piece, or once again comb through the archives for some appropriate entry?

Definitey need to hit Beau up again for more musical ideas. (Bro, your score was a hit).

*********************************

Right.
That aside.

At this performance, I knew most of the audience by name. Most were my friends. They were my colleagues, they were students of mine from quarters past, and there was a strong phalanx of the guys from the gaming lab, and Marie made it too. She was our interpreter and joined in later when twenty of us hit the Dinosaur BBQ afterwards. I was feeling the love.

Aidan had his birthday party yesterday at the house. It was a long a hectic day. A good day, filled with not only 9 year old boys, but other friends stopping by for an impromptu dinner party...this while the neighborhood kids remained.

Our house, the growing-up-house, was the gathering place. My house, now, is becoming such a place. And I think it’s a good thing.

Now I’m very tired - but very good.

Posted 04/30/2005
(12) Comments • Permalink•

Unpopular childrens' books

This was eli’s away message

unpopular children’s books

Goodnight, pooppile
Oh the Places You’ll See on TV
Use of the Passive Voice in Business Negotiation
Mommy is Actually a Robot

My additions to the list:

Daddy is Possessed: at home exorcisim kit (fun for the whole family)
Let’s Run With Scissors
Fido Got Put Down

Posted 04/27/2005
(9) Comments • Permalink•

a most important question

Me: Do you want me to empathize or be the voice of reason?

Dear friend: Empathize.

Me: Excellent. It was a residual bit of science that floated up to the surface of consciousness. Thus began a series of thought experiments while ensconced in warm blankets with nothing more in the next hour than coffee.

The only thing one is capable of feeling through the skin is pressure and temperature and, if some stimulus goes beyond the bounds of those sensory perceptions, pain. You don’t feel wetness or softness or grittiness. All of those adjectives are pattern recognition from the inside out.

You don’t see beauty or ugliness. You see light and dark and color. Even the recognition of objects before the adjectives are applied are a matter mental reckoning as labels are applied and overlayed with experience.

Eyes closed.
This is dry. Dry is the experience of touch without a sudden immersion of sense.

I remember wearing rubber gloves and putting my hands in the dishwater and feeling the wetness. I took my hands out and gloves off to inspect the gloves’ integrity. Nope. Hands dry. It was a fake feeling.

I put my palm to my cheek.

My cheek is warm. My hand is cool. They are dry. And I cannot tell which is sensing what. And I can’t tickle myself even though I try. Nor can I feel what someone else would feel if they were to kiss me by touching my own lips with the tip of my finger.

I think of computers, and dumb sensors, and smart sensors, and barely managed articulated ones...and then decide it is time for coffee.

Posted 04/24/2005
(2) Comments • Permalink•

and so it goes

Aidan is 9 today.

Time is speeding up
Again.

This year I see him battling the playground jungle and figuring out where he is in the gradeschool caste system. He is learning about escalation of conflict (i.e. if we start out with squirt guns, and I grab the hose, then Miles grabbing the hose from me and dousing me is fair game), he is learning that not all kids are nice, but that some are. He is learning that what is funny is very much dependent upon the individual. That he might sometimes be the bully. That sometimes he is the bullied...and what he might do about it.

It’s all very complicated—this growing up business. We’ll shower him with as much love as we can to buffer the process.

So today, we’re baking cake and making pizza and I will be doing guerrilla decorating while Jim buys him a trick bike.
