Our ability to effectively treat diseases is dependent on the development of new pharmaceuticals, and one potential source of novel drugs is traditional medicine. Now-a-days, plants have been exploited as a powerful and potential source for medicinal drugs. Herbal drugs are mainly focussed as an alternative source against manifestations caused by various micro-organisms due to the increasing resistance of existing antimicrobial agents. The present study attempts to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of the crude methanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum (Local name: Ram tulashi), Spondias pinnata (Local name: Amora), Terminalia chebula (Local name: Silikha) and Hedyotis pinifolia (Local name: Bon jaluk) against six Gram-positive bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Micrococcus luteus, Listeria class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Introduction: Phytochemicals are non-nutritive, chemical compounds that occur naturally on plants and have diverse protective properties .Most Phytochemicals like carotenoids, flavonoids and polyphenols have antimicrobial activity and serve as a source of antimicrobial agents against human pathogens. In the present study, five indigenous plants of Assam namely Oldenlandia corymbosa, Ricinus communis, Lpomea aquatica, Xanthium strumarium, Mentha piperita were analyzed for various Phytochemicals present and their antimicrobial activity. Methods: Phytochemical screening tests was conducted for five plant species and found that extract contains a variety of Phytochemicals like saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides and reducing sugars and among which there is higher level of precipitation for phenol and flavonoids. As they are essential source of antimicrobial agents against pathogens, their extract were tested for its antimicrobial activity by well diffusion method using Nutrient agar against human pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli. Results: The study plant extract of Xanthium strumarium(leaves, roots) and Mentha piperita(stem) had shown a strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and the plant extract of Ricinus communis(leaves ,stem, roots), Lpomea aquatica (stem)had shown antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Oldenlandia corymbosa hadn't shown antimicrobial activity for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This study provided evidence to confirm the presence of various medicinally important bioactive compounds or Phytochemicals that has got biological importance and it justifies their use in the traditional medicines for the treatment of different diseases and this findings suggest that the selected plant extracts possesses antimicrobial properties that could be used for biological control of bacterial cultures and this bioactive compounds serve as a source of antimicrobial agents against human pathogens.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Phytochemical Analysis of Traditional Medicinal Plants and their Antimicrobial Activity: An Experience from North East India","attachmentId":68649491,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/50781872/Phytochemical_Analysis_of_Traditional_Medicinal_Plants_and_their_Antimicrobial_Activity_An_Experience_from_North_East_India","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Ethno botanical, antibacterial and antifungal study of three medicinal plants of Morigaon district of Assam, India
Debajit Kalita, PhD, FAELS

Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biological Research

Objectives: To investigate the ethno botanical uses and antimicrobial activity of different extracts of the some medicinal plants frequently used in Assam. Treatment of various diseases and metabolic disorder through indigenous medicinal plants is an age old practice and traditional knowledge of Assamese people. Methods: We have selected three medicinal plants Spondias pinnata, Oxalis corniculata and Asparagus racemosus on the depending of its frequent use and extract was prepared by using Soxhlet apparatus of 2-3 continuous cycle. The all extract was tested against both pathogenic bacteria E. coli(MTCC723 ), Bacillus subtillis(MTCC ) and Staphylococcus aureus(MTCC96) and fungi, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum. The famous disc diffusion and agar well method was employed to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity. Fifteen plants were selected on the basis of literature survey of traditional and folk medicine for microbial infections. The plants were collected and extracted each separately with 95% ethanol under cold conditions. The phytochemicals were qualitatively and quantitatively determined. By agar dilution method the MIC values were obtained of ethanolic extracts derived from the 15 plants that exhibited anti-microbial activity ranging between 2-0.25 mg/ml. MIC values for the Aloe vera, Boerhaavia diffusa and Lawsonia inermis found to be active against Streptococccus pyogens and Staphylococcus aureus with MIC of 0.25 mg/ml. Among above three except Aloe vera was not active against Staphylococcus aureus at 0.5 mg/ml.
