href="/acts/25-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>Festus<MG5347>, then<MG3767>, after arriving<MG1910> in the province<MG1885>, went<MG305> up<MG305> to Jerusalem<MG2414> from Caesarea<MG2542> three<MG5140> days<MG2250> later<MG3326>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>And the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the leading<MG4413> men<MG4413> of the Jews<MG2453> brought<MG1718> charges<MG1718> against<MG2596> Paul<MG3972>, and they were pleading<MG3870> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Festus, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>requesting<MG154> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>concession<MG5485> against<MG2596> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Paul, that he might <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>have him brought<MG3343> to Jerusalem<MG2419> (<i>at the same time,</i> setting<MG4160> an ambush<MG1747> to kill<MG337> him on the way<MG3598>). <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Festus<MG5347> then<MG3767> answered<MG611> that Paul<MG3972> was being kept<MG5083> in<MG5083> custody<MG5083> in Caesarea<MG2542>, and that he himself<MG1438> was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> leave<MG1607> shortly<MG5034>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“Therefore<MG3767>,” he *said<MG5346>, “have the influential<MG1415> men<MG1415> among<MG1722> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>go<MG4782> there with me, and if<MG1487> there is anything<MG5100> wrong<MG824> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>about<MG1722> the man<MG435>, have them bring<MG2723> charges<MG2723> against<MG2723> him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>After <i>Festus</i> had spent<MG1304> no<MG3756> more<MG4183> than eight<MG3638> or<MG2228> ten<MG1176> days<MG2250> among<MG1722> them, he went<MG2597> down<MG2597> to Caesarea<MG2542>, and on the next<MG1887> day<MG1887> he took<MG2523> his seat<MG2523> on the tribunal<MG968> and ordered<MG2753> that Paul<MG3972> be brought<MG71>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>After Paul arrived<MG3854>, the Jews<MG2453> who had come<MG2597> down<MG2597> from Jerusalem<MG2414> stood<MG4026> around<MG4026> him, bringing<MG2702> many<MG4183>, and serious<MG926>, charges<MG159b> against<MG2702> him which<MG3739> they could<MG2480> not prove<MG584>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>while Paul<MG3972> said<MG626> in<MG626> his own defense<MG626>, “I have not done<MG264> anything<MG5100> wrong<MG264> either<MG3777> against<MG1519> the Law<MG3551> of the Jews<MG2453>, or<MG3777> against<MG1519> the temple<MG2413>, or<MG3777> against<MG1519> Caesar<MG2541>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But Festus<MG5347>, wanting<MG2309> to do<MG2698> the Jews<MG2453> a favor<MG5485>, replied<MG611> to Paul<MG3972> and said<MG3004>, “Are you willing<MG2309> to go<MG305> up<MG305> to Jerusalem<MG2414> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>stand<MG2919> trial<MG2919> before<MG1909> me on these<MG3778> <i>charges?</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But Paul<MG3972> said<MG3004>, “I am<MG1510> standing<MG2476> before<MG1909> Caesar’s<MG2541> tribunal<MG968>, where<MG3757> I ought<MG1163> to be tried<MG2919>. I have done<MG91> nothing<MG3762> wrong<MG91> to <i>the</i> Jews<MG2453>, as you also<MG2532> very<MG2573> well<MG2573> know<MG1921>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>If<MG1487>, therefore<MG3767>, I am<MG91> in<MG91> the<MG91> wrong<MG91> and have committed<MG4238> something<MG5100> deserving<MG514> death<MG2288>, I am not trying<MG3868> to<MG3868> avoid<MG3868> execution<MG599>; but if<MG1487> there is nothing<MG3762> to the accusations<MG2723> which<MG3739> these<MG3778> men<MG3778> are bringing<MG2723> against<MG2723> me, no<MG3762> one<MG3762> can<MG1410> hand<MG5483> me over<MG5483> to them. I appeal<MG1941> to<MG1941> Caesar<MG2541>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> when Festus<MG5347> had conferred<MG4814> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>his council<MG4824>, he answered<MG611>, “You have appealed<MG1941> to<MG1941> Caesar<MG2541>; to Caesar<MG2541> you shall go<MG4198>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when several<MG5100> days<MG2250> had passed<MG1230>, King<MG935> Agrippa<MG67> and Bernice<MG959> arrived<MG2658> in Caesarea<MG2542>, paying<MG782> their respects<MG782> to Festus<MG5347>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And while<MG5613> they were spending<MG1304> many<MG4183> days<MG2250> there<MG1563>, Festus<MG5347> presented<MG394> Paul’s<MG3972> case<MG3588, 2596> to the king<MG935>, saying<MG3004>, “There is a man<MG435> who was left<MG2641> as a prisoner<MG1198> by Felix<MG5344>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and when I was in Jerusalem<MG2414>, the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the elders<MG4245> of the Jews<MG2453> brought<MG1718> charges<MG1718> against<MG4012> him, asking<MG154> for a sentence<MG2613b> of<MG2613b> condemnation<MG2613b> against<MG4012> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>I replied<MG611> to them that it is not the custom<MG1485> of the Romans<MG4514> to hand<MG5483> over<MG5483> any<MG5100> person<MG444> before<MG4250> the accused<MG2723> meets<MG2192> his accusers<MG2725a> face<MG4383> to face<MG4383>, and has<MG2192> an opportunity<MG5117> to make his defense<MG627> against<MG4012> the charges<MG1462>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So<MG3767> after they had assembled<MG4905> here<MG1759a>, I did not delay<MG311a>, but on the next<MG1836> day took<MG2523> my seat<MG2523> on the tribunal<MG968> and ordered<MG2753> that the man<MG435> be brought<MG71>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>When the accusers<MG2725a> stood<MG2476> up, they did not <i>begin</i> bringing<MG5342> any<MG3762> charges<MG156> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>against<MG4012> him of crimes<MG4190> that I suspected<MG5282>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>but they <i>simply</i> had<MG2192> some<MG5100> points<MG2213> of<MG2213> disagreement<MG2213> with him about<MG4012> their own<MG2398> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>religion<MG1175> and about<MG4012> a dead<MG2348> man<MG2348>, Jesus<MG2424>, whom<MG3739> Paul<MG3972> asserted<MG5335> to be alive<MG2198>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And being<MG639> at<MG639> a<MG639> loss<MG639> how<MG2214> to<MG2214> investigate<MG2214> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>such<MG3778> matters, I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>asked<MG3004> whether<MG1487> he was willing<MG1014> to go<MG4198> to Jerusalem<MG2414> and stand<MG2919> trial<MG2919> there<MG2546> on these<MG3778> matters. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But when Paul<MG3972> appealed<MG1941> to be held<MG5083> in<MG5083> custody<MG5083> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>the Emperor’s<MG4575> decision<MG1233>, I ordered<MG2753> that he be kept<MG5083> in<MG5083> custody<MG5083> until<MG2193> I send<MG375a> him to Caesar<MG2541>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> Agrippa<MG67> <i>said</i> to Festus<MG5347>, “I also<MG2532> would like<MG1014> to hear<MG191> the man<MG444> myself<MG846>.” “Tomorrow<MG839>,” he *said<MG5346>, “you shall hear<MG191> him.” <p class="hdg">Paul before Agrippa</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So<MG3767>, on the next<MG1887> day<MG1887> when Agrippa<MG67> and Bernice<MG959> came<MG2064> amid<MG3326> great<MG4183> pomp<MG5325> and entered<MG1525> the auditorium<MG201>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>accompanied<MG4862> by the commanders<MG5506> and the prominent<MG1851> men<MG435> of the city<MG4172>, at the command<MG2753> of Festus<MG5347>, Paul<MG3972> was brought<MG71> <i>before them.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And Festus<MG5347> *said<MG5346>, “King<MG935> Agrippa<MG67>, and all<MG3956> you gentlemen<MG435> present<MG4840> with us, you see<MG2334> this<MG3778> man<MG3778> about<MG4012> whom<MG3739> all<MG537a> the people<MG4128> of the Jews<MG2453> appealed<MG1793> to me, both<MG5037> in Jerusalem<MG2414> and here<MG1759a>, shouting<MG994> that he ought<MG1163> not to live<MG2198> any<MG3371> longer<MG3371>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But I found<MG2638> that he had committed<MG4238> nothing<MG3367> deserving<MG514> death<MG2288>; and since he himself<MG846> appealed<MG1941> to<MG1941> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>the Emperor<MG4575>, I decided<MG2919> to send<MG3992> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/25-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Yet, I have<MG2192> nothing<MG3756> definite<MG804> about<MG4012> him to write<MG1125> to my lord<MG2962>.
