Little is known how the existing working conditions of the Bangladesh RMG sector impact workers' health and overall wellbeing, which remains the key aim of this study. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative descriptive design. Twenty-seven RMG workers (female: 21, male: 6) were purposively recruited for focus groups (FGs) from both the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and non-EPZ factories located in Dhaka and Chattogram, the two largest cities in Bangladesh. FGs were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Inductive thematic analysis was performed to review the transcribed data and to identify themes. Results: The study identified that the existing working conditions impacted workers' health and wellbeing severely. These conditions mainly comprise of inadequate workplace facilities (lack of pure drinking water, unavailability of qualified doctors, and fabricated signage of childcare facilities) and poor working environments (lack of hygienic practices, unavailability of safety equipment, sexual harassment, mandatory nights shifts, inappropriate sitting arrangements, and workplaces as death traps). All the female workers reported experience of verbal or sexual harassment at least once inside the factories also noted anxiety and feeling unsafe while working during night shifts. These conditions are presented within the socioeconomic conditions of Bangladesh. Conclusions: This study contributes to understanding the nexus between factory owners' profit maximization mindset and workplace conditions in relation to workers' health and wellbeing status. At the end of 2004, the sector survived the Multi-Fiber Arrangement (MFA) phase out as it triumphed over the relative emerging economies and continues to remain internationally competitive till date. The dynamic development of the industry has entailed great diversity in efficiency in comparison with the garment industries of other developing countries. Although there is a significant scale effect in profitability and productivity, no supporting evidence was found for the positive impact on competitiveness of industrial upgrading in terms of usage of expensive machinery, vertical integration, and industrial agglomeration. However, the painfully crippling state of working conditions for the labour, the safety hazards that they are forced to work in, and bleak future prospects ahead of them are just some of the concerns of the Bangladesh RMG sector. Amongst the garment workers 70 per cent are women, they toil from dawn to dusk even up to late night in spite of the wage discriminations and below satisfactory working levels. Affording daily items such as foods, cloths, housing, medicines, and even education of their wards necessitates umpteen of sacrifices. As a result, their children are deprived from their care and suffer from grave malnutrition coupled with unhygienic complexities. They simply have no time or scope for recreation and are even at times employed in making the garments themselves. Market force, represented by low wage of labor, the lackadaisical government attitudes, the negligence of legislative and the executive arms of the state and the dynamism inside the industry are just some of the factors responsible for their exploitation. The roles of the government, industrial associations and technology transfer are also known to affect the workers negatively. Total sample was 145 and purposive sampling technique was followed for data collection, which was done by face to face interview. The data was collected on a structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 17.0. Majority (40%) were found in the age group of 16-20 years where mean age was 23.30 ±6.92 years. Among them female (89%) outnumbered the male (11%). Of them 96% were Muslim. Majority (48.3%) were educated up to primary school and most of them (55.9%) were married. 91.7% had monthly salary of 1001-5000 taka. 52.4% respondents were machine operator, but maximum (75%) were unskilled and 72% had length of job between 2-7 years. 91% respondents normally worked for 8-9 hours. 85.5% did 2-3 hours overtime. In the last one year 64.8% had no accident but minor cut, burn or injury was faced by 28.3%. Most of the (44%) respondents did not complain about physical environmental pollution but 33.8% complained of noise pollution. Majority (84.8%) were satisfied with the constant presence of doctor or nurse in their factory. Maximum (51%) respondents suffered from headache or shoulder pain. Insomnia was common in 20% respondents. Majority (56.6%) did not mention any permanent illness. In this study the prevalence of occupational health hazards was 88.28%. A significant relationship was found between noise pollution and headache (P<0.014) and also between length of job (in years) & backache (P<0.091). At the same time this industry opened a new door of employment for the rural marginal people. The working environment of the garment factories is not congenial to health and the income level of the workers in this industry is very poor to keep up their minimum living requirements in the society. As a result, the workers in the readymade garment industry are not physically and mentally sound to do the work efficiently. Keeping this in mind, the study has been conducted to identify the major health problems of the workers in the garment industry of Bangladesh. In this study 265 workers have been interviewed personally and collected data have been analyzed through factor analysis to identify the major health problems of the workers derived from the working environment and the nature of their job. This study identified fourteen major health problems of the workers. They are pain in body muscles, complexity arises from abortion, food poisoning, pruritus, eye stain, neck pain, hepatitis, frequent headache, cut injury, fatigue, common cold, numbness and tingling of fingers and arms, gastric pain and helminthiasis. Basically, this sector is the key base of foreign earnings and as well as for employment generation to the economic development of a nation as a whole. About more than 5 million workers are involved in this sector of Bangladesh. In recent years, this sector is facing serious disturbances from workers due to unwelcomed working environment which are created a serious bad image to the international buyers. Keeping this concern, the study is try to find out the relationship between labor unrest and working environment of ready-made garments sector in Bangladesh. A total of 80 workers were selected through simple random sampling technique (lottery method). To collect primary data a well structured and close-ended questionnaire has been used. The data were analyzed and interpreted using linear regression, coefficient analysis and SPSS 16.0 to serve the purpose of the study. The study concluded with the observation that majority of the respondents give emphasis on unjust payment behavior, absence of proper infrastructural facilities, absence of proper recreation facilities and mental harassment. The present study is aimed at identifying and comparing the present condition of the health and safety environment in a garment company with the relevant laws. The nature of this study is exclusively a case study where only qualitative data were used. Personal observation and interview schedule were used to conduct the survey. 10% of the total population (i.e. 115) was selected randomly as the sample size which covers workers, concerned departmental executives, supervisors and managers of the garment company. It has been revealed from the present study that the sample organization does not follow all the provisions regarding health, hygiene and safety of workers as per the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006 amended in 2013.This study found out that the organization does not ensure the prescribed space for every worker in a workroom ; there is no emergency exit and fire exit; all the dangerous machineries are not securely fenced; the company does not thoroughly examine every part of cranes and other lifting machinery regularly, which may cause accident; the company does not follow the schedule to examine every hoist and lift thoroughly by competent person; the latrines, washrooms, dust beans and spittoons are not clean at all times. Finally, some important recommendations are given to improve the health and safety environment of the sample organization on the basis of findings. More than 75% of foreign earnings are coming from this very important sector of Bangladesh. Presently, more than four million workers are working in 4,500 RMG companies in which 90% are illiterate women came from the rural areas of Bangladesh (Islam & Muntaquimul Bari Chowdhuri, 2014). The policymakers and the employers of this sector claim that the growth of garment sector has helped employing a huge number of rural women that has subsequently developed their socioeconomic status in Bangladesh. But, it is a concern of the national and internal observers that the labor laws and other compliances like factory laws, industrial relations laws, employment laws, payment of wages laws, ILO standards, ethics applied in this sector are hardly followed by the RMG companies which are making the lives of these workers very difficult. Sometimes, these workers are exploited by employing more hours a day without the payment of overtime by capitalizing their illiteracy and submissiveness. Hence, this paper aims at identifying the level of application of the labor laws and other compliances in RMG industry of Bangladesh that is the only protective measures of this large number of female workers of this important sector of Bangladesh. A total of 238 workers of this sector were interviewed in this study with a structured questionnaire. Multivariate analysis techniques such as, Factor Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data collected from the workers on the application of labor laws and other compliances of these companies. The results show that in case of measures for protecting sexual harassment there is a severe problem of the use of the labor laws in this sector followed by physical movement and access control of workers, exit and access path of the company, working hours, and counseling arrangements in the company. This study suggests that the readymade garment companies should address the sexual harassment issue seriously so that the workers will feel safe at their work. They also should focus more on the safety issues, working hours and counseling of the workers in order to make the working environment more favorable to the workers.
