They are based on a selection of the papers given at the Second International Conference for East Norse Philology held at Ca’Foscari University ofVenice in November 2015. The volume covers subjects ranging from codicology and material philology to text transmission and reception, from women’s literacy in medieval Sweden to studies of Old Danish lexicon, and from Bible translations to Old Swedish poetics. In all, there are five sections in the volume – Palaeography, Codicology, and Editing; Manuscript Studies; Vocabulary and Style; Literature and Writing; Bibles and Translations – that all demonstrate the breadth and vitality of East Norse philology. That period was a significant one in the process which led from medieval saga production to modern saga studies, with its canon of texts and generic divisions. Illuga saga is nowadays deemed a peripheral text, closer to being a fairy-tale than a historical (legendary) saga. The main question answered here is why scholars in Sweden, trying to bolster the case for national superiority, deemed it worthwhile to publish an edition of such a saga and refer to it in their national histories. The exception is poetry, where the introduction of variant readings and emendations is often necessary. This two-pronged and overall restrictive approach is based on the characteristics of the corpus, but in recent decades, some scholars have called its premises into question, either in theory or in practice. In most examples discussed in this article, arguments against textual criticism are paired with disregard for or misrepresentation of its aims and methods. In other instances, scholars who attempt a reconstructive approach neglect the epistemological preconditions of textual criticism, even when drawing on its assumptions. In order to address these issues, the present article discusses the goals and principles of textual criticism with reference to examples from Old Norse scholarship.
