Beyond the Piraeus Lion comprises fourteen articles on a vast number of topics by researchers from Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, and the USA. They are based on a selection of the papers given at the Second International Conference for East Norse Philology held at Ca’Foscari University ofVenice in November 2015. The volume covers subjects ranging from codicology and material philology to text transmission and reception, from women’s literacy in medieval Sweden to studies of Old Danish lexicon, and from Bible translations to Old Swedish poetics. Between several possible approaches, we selected the difficulties more closely related to the historian work, particularly in the field of Theory of History. We start our discussion presenting the terminology - subject that, by itself, would generate a separate dissertation. Following that, we think about some dualities presented in the question, particularly the temporal duality presented in the proper Scandinavian sources that, although written in 13th and 14th centuries, discusses and narrates events occurred in previous centuries, mainly 9th to 11th. Another duality it is generated by the last one. The concentration of traditional, written sources in 13th-14th centuries followed by the predominant archaeological research dealing with the 9th-11th tantalizingly induces the researcher to a simplistic distinction between "what really happened", studied by archaeology, and "what was written about this", studied by History.
