between the early nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, mainly medical reports, this paper indicates the prevailing conceptions in the colonial medical community and local populations about leprosy, its manifestations, and how to deal with it. It focuses on the tensions concerning the practice of segregating lepers and its social and sanitation implications. Such colonies, however, have endured. As is being increasingly recognized by those working in the leprosy field, such places have played a particular role not only in the provision of leprosy-related care but also in forging new and collective identities for people affected by leprosy that might otherwise not have been possible. In this article, I draw on ethnographic fieldwork in one such colony in coastal Andhra Pradesh, South India, and explore the values invested in it as a particular kind of place; its geographical Nuah P TARIGAN.,MA</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Sitanala leprosy village is a spontaneously established village of " kusta " patients (leprosy or morbus hansen) from the Sitanala leprosy hospital located in Tangerang Banten. Its location not far from the airport Soekarno Hatta promising an interesting prospect for Local Government to change the location of the leprosy residence from there to become a business center. The burden of leprosy stigma is still very high, even in areas called "low endemic". Both individuals, families and communities experience painful effects.
