Studies of anesthetized animals have indicated that neuronal responses become progressively more variable as information travels from the retina to the cortex. These results have been interpreted to indicate that perception must be based on pooling across relatively large numbers of cells. However, we find that in alert monkeys, responses in primary visual cortex (V1) are as reliable as the inputs from the retina and the thalamus. Moreover, when the effects of fixational eye movements were minimized, response variability (variance/mean-Fano factor, FF) in all V1 layers was low. When presenting optimal stimuli, the median FF was 0.3. High variability, FF~1, was found only near threshold. Our results suggest that in natural vision, suprathreshold perception can be based on small numbers of optimally stimulated cells.","publication_date":"2005,9,8","publication_name":"Cerebral Cortex","grobid_abstract_attachment_id":"111388162"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":null,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"High Response Reliability of Neurons in Primary Visual Cortex (V1) of Alert, Trained Monkeys","broadcastable":false,"draft":null,"has_indexable_attachment":true,"indexable":true}}["work"]; It is generally thought that response variability in the visual system increases at cortical levels, but the causes of the variability have not been identified. We have measured the response variability of neurons in primary visual cortex (V1) of alert monkeys. We recorded from 80 single cells distributed over all V1 layers and from 8 parvocellular cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus. All cells were stimulated with a bar of near-optimal orientation, color, and dimensions while continuously monitoring the eye movements of fixation. To minimize the effects of eye movements, responses that occurred while the eye was relatively steady were selected for analysis. The impulses elicited by each stimulus presentation were counted, and the variance and coefficient of variation were computed. Both measures of response variability were much lower than reported previously for V1 cells of both alert and...</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Response variability of neurons in primary visual cortex (V1) of alert monkeys","attachmentId":66961727,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/48227938/Response_variability_of_neurons_in_primary_visual_cortex_V1_of_alert_monkeys","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/48227938/Response_variability_of_neurons_in_primary_visual_cortex_V1_of_alert_monkeys"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="17887233" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/17887233/Low_Response_Variability_in_Simultaneously_Recorded_Retinal_Thalamic_and_Cortical_Neurons">Low Response Variability in Simultaneously Recorded Retinal, Thalamic, and Cortical Neurons</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="37797284" href="https://independent.academia.edu/PReinagel">P. In this study, we compared the precision, reliability, and information content of spike trains from X- and Y-cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and layer IV simple cells of area 17 in the cat. To a stochastic, contrast-modulated Gabor patch, layer IV simple cells responded as precisely as their primary inputs, LGN X-cells, but less reliably. LGN Y-cells were more precise and reliable than LGN X-cells. Also, within each LGN cell type, 1) responses to the same stimulus were nearly identical if they shared the same center sign and 2) responses of neurons with the same center sign were nearly identical to the responses of neurons of opposite center sign if the stimulus&#39; contrasts were inverted. These results suggest simple cells receive highly precise and synchronous LGN input, resulting in precise responses. class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">A fundamental question concerning representation of the visual world in our brain is how a cortical cell responds when presented with more than a single stimulus. We find supportive evidence that most cells presented with a pair of stimuli respond predominantly to one stimulus at a time, rather than a weighted average response. Traditionally, the firing rate is assumed to be a weighted average of the firing rates to the individual stimuli (response-averaging model) (Bundesen et al., 2005). Here, we also evaluate a probability-mixing model (Bundesen et al., 2005), where neurons temporally multiplex the responses to the individual stimuli. This provides a mechanism by which the representational identity of multiple stimuli in complex visual scenes can be maintained despite the large receptive fields in higher extrastriate visual cortex in primates. We compare the two models through analysis of data from single cells in the middle temporal visual area (MT) of rhesus monkeys when presen...</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Neurons in Primate Visual Cortex Alternate between Responses to Multiple Stimuli in Their Receptive Field","attachmentId":67376044,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/48986588/Neurons_in_Primate_Visual_Cortex_Alternate_between_Responses_to_Multiple_Stimuli_in_Their_Receptive_Field","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/48986588/Neurons_in_Primate_Visual_Cortex_Alternate_between_Responses_to_Multiple_Stimuli_in_Their_Receptive_Field"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="124336680" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/124336680/Neuronal_population_activity_in_macaque_visual_cortices_dynamically_changes_through_repeated_fixations_in_active_free_viewing">Neuronal population activity in macaque visual cortices dynamically changes through repeated fixations in active free viewing</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="122438195" href="https://independent.academia.edu/FujitaIchiro">Ichiro Fujita</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">ENeuro, 2023</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Neuronal population activity in macaque visual cortices dynamically changes through repeated fixations in active free viewing","attachmentId":118581190,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/124336680/Neuronal_population_activity_in_macaque_visual_cortices_dynamically_changes_through_repeated_fixations_in_active_free_viewing","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/124336680/Neuronal_population_activity_in_macaque_visual_cortices_dynamically_changes_through_repeated_fixations_in_active_free_viewing"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":111388162,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":111388162,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_111388162" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
