evangelical feminist interpretation of the Bible. The first hermeneutical tension concern the issue of readers&#39; prejudices. Feminists remind us that readers are always disposed to read texts against the background of their own expectations, customs, and world views. And the second hermeneutical tension, namely the tension over the nature of the actual practices of the first century church. Evangelical feminists have tended to give different answers depending on the passage that they are interpreting. In sum, feminism in its hermeneutical principles alerts us to the role of reader prejudice and social background in understanding texts. EEWC was founded in 1973 and continues today with an active website and annual conferences. It was originally the Evangelical Women’s Caucus, but is currently referred to as Christian Feminism Today or EEWC. It was from EWC that the second organization, Christians for Biblical Equality, grew. In the late 1980s, disagreements about scriptural authority and organizational emphasis led to a split in the group. Christians for Biblical Equality maintained a primary focus on gender equality and traditional biblical hermeneutics, while the Evangelical Ecumenical Women’s Caucus/ Christian Feminism Today, chose to expand to their concerns to other issues of civil equality (e.g. race and sexuality) and to embrace many tenants of Liberal Theology and goddess worship. In this paper I situate these two groups in relation to 1) each other, 2) secular feminisms, and 3) religious scholarship and ideology. My primary objects of analysis will be Rosemarie Tong’s Feminist Thought: A More Comprehensive Introduction, Pamela Cochran’s Evangelical Feminism: A History, and the website for each organization. This will be an intersectional analysis that I hope will show the complexity that religion adds to the already complex ideological system within feminism. This paper argues that in this work Palmer forged an evangelical “hermeneutic of suspicion” to question ecclesial customs and exegesis of biblical passages that silenced women and limited their religious leadership. The feminism of Palmer can be defined as a belief in the spiritual equality of men and women and a commitment to each individual’s freedom to choose his/her own destiny based only on a God-given sense of calling rather than a gender-determined role. Harold Raser identified five lines of argument that Palmer employed to build her case for a “sanctified feminism.” First, she structured her argument around a central narrative in which the story of Pentecost marked a new dispensation of God’s power on men and women alike, reordering religious life not by gender, class, or race but by spiritual vocation for all baptized in the Spirit. Second, Palmer employed a modern critical methodology of interpretation demonstrating a shift in her own technique of using biblical texts. She identified passages often used to oppose women’s ministry and questioned how they must be treated to be “rightly understood.” Abandoning the practice of prooftexting utilized throughout her previous publications, she appealed instead to historical context when she warned against “serious errors in faith and practice [that] have resulted from taking isolated passages dissevered from their proper connections [in order] to sustain a favorite theory!” Third, she developed an argument from history beginning with exemplars of female leadership in the Old Testament, examining passages about female disciples, deaconesses, and apostles in the New Testament, citing early church writers, and finally appealing to more contemporary authorities from Methodist history. Fourth, she examined inconsistent practices of women’s religious participation within church tradition. Pointing out women’s public involvement in singing, call and response liturgy, and prayer, she insisted that a literal reading of texts that instruct women to remain silent must be reconsidered. She made a final defense giving exemplars of the “good fruit” of women’s ministry as proof that God uses female agency to accomplish divine purposes. Selecting verbatim accounts from diaries, letters, and records kept by evangelical authors, she presented evidence that God has commissioned women to prophesy and evangelize. This paper shows that the latter four approaches act as subsidiary lines of argument ancillary to the overarching metaphoric approach that Palmer used to reconfigure holiness and destabilize the evangelical image of female obedience. Raser’s analysis only briefly touched on the symbolism that Palmer engaged suggesting that perhaps he considered this hermeneutic an aberration from the more normative categories of Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience that form the Wesleyan quadrilateral.
