Feminists remind us that readers are always disposed to read texts against the background of their own expectations, customs, and world views. And the second hermeneutical tension, namely the tension over the nature of the actual practices of the first century church. Evangelical feminists have tended to give different answers depending on the passage that they are interpreting. In sum, feminism in its hermeneutical principles alerts us to the role of reader prejudice and social background in understanding texts. While the paper focuses on feminist theology in particular, the same methodology is used by those advocating a new interpretation of the scriptures towards the practice of homosexuality.... A subtle but radical difference in hermeneutics has taken place at this juncture. For while conservatives and fundamentalists may disagree about the meaning of the text, they agree about its authority. Now, however, the authority of the intended meaning of the text is relativized by appealing to a hermeneutical authority that exists not in the text itself, but in the vantage point of the interpreter. The descriptive goal is to introduce and describe standpoint theory—an epistemological framework from sociology—and describe how it relates to the current evangelical gender debates as well as historical slavery debates. The prescriptive goal is a call for theologians to consider adopting a standpoint hermeneutic, which would involve being more self-reflexive about power and privilege.
