and they also<MG2532> had<MG2192> John<MG2491> as their helper<MG5257>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When they had gone<MG1330> through<MG1330> the whole<MG3650> island<MG3520> as far<MG891> as Paphos<MG3974>, they found<MG2147> a magician<MG3097>, a Jewish<MG2453> false<MG5578> prophet<MG5578> whose<MG3739> name<MG3686> was Bar-Jesus<MG919>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>who<MG3739> was with the proconsul<MG446>, Sergius<MG4588a> Paulus<MG3972>, a man<MG435> of intelligence<MG4908>. This<MG3778> man<MG3778> summoned<MG4341> Barnabas<MG921> and Saul<MG4569> and sought<MG1934> to hear<MG191> the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But Elymas<MG1681> the magician<MG3097> (for so<MG3779> his name<MG3686> is translated<MG3177>) was opposing<MG436> them, seeking<MG2212> to turn<MG1294> the proconsul<MG446> away<MG1294> from the faith<MG4102>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But Saul<MG4569>, who<MG3588> was also<MG2532> <i>known as</i> Paul<MG3972>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>filled<MG4092a> with the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>, stared<MG816> at him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and said<MG3004>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>You who are full<MG4134> of all<MG3956> deceit<MG1388> and fraud<MG4468>, you son<MG5207> of the devil<MG1228>, you enemy<MG2190> of all<MG3956> righteousness<MG1343>, will you not stop<MG3973> making<MG1294> crooked<MG1294> the straight<MG2117> ways<MG3598> of the Lord<MG2962>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MG3568>, behold<MG2400>, the hand<MG5495> of the Lord<MG2962> is upon you, and you will be blind<MG5185> and not see<MG991> the sun<MG2246> for a time<MG2540>.” And immediately<MG3916> a mist<MG887> and a darkness<MG4655> fell<MG4098> upon him, and he went<MG4013> about<MG4013> seeking<MG2212> those who<MG5497> would lead<MG5497> him by<MG5497> the<MG5497> hand<MG5497>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> the proconsul<MG446> believed<MG4100> when he saw<MG3708> what had happened<MG1096>, being amazed<MG1605> at the teaching<MG1322> of the Lord<MG2962>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Paul<MG3972> and his companions<MG3588, 4012> put<MG321> out<MG321> to<MG321> sea<MG321> from Paphos<MG3974> and came<MG2064> to Perga<MG4011> in Pamphylia<MG3828>; but John<MG2491> left<MG672> them and returned<MG5290> to Jerusalem<MG2414>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But going<MG1330> on<MG1330> from Perga<MG4011>, they arrived<MG3854> at Pisidian<MG4099> Antioch<MG490>, and on the Sabbath<MG4521> day<MG2250> they went<MG2064> into the synagogue<MG4864> and sat<MG2523> down<MG2523>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>After<MG3326> the reading<MG320> of the Law<MG3551> and the Prophets<MG4396>, the synagogue<MG752> officials<MG752> sent<MG649> <i>word</i> to them, saying<MG3004>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Brothers<MG435, 80>, if<MG1487> you have any<MG5100> word<MG3056> of exhortation<MG3874> for the people<MG2992>, say<MG3004> it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Paul<MG3972> stood<MG450> up<MG450>, and motioning<MG2678> with his hand<MG5495> said<MG3004>, <p class="paragraph"> “Men<MG435> of Israel<MG2475a>, and you who fear<MG5399> God<MG2316>, listen<MG191>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The God<MG2316> of this<MG3778> people<MG2992> Israel<MG2474> chose<MG1586> our fathers<MG3962> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>made<MG5312> the people<MG2992> great<MG5312> during<MG1722> their stay<MG3940> in the land<MG1093> of Egypt<MG125>, and with an uplifted<MG5308> arm<MG1023> He led<MG1806> them out<MG1806> from it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For a period<MG5550> of about<MG5613> forty<MG5066a> years<MG5066a> He put<MG5159> up<MG5159> with them in the wilderness<MG2048>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>When He had destroyed<MG2507> seven<MG2033> nations<MG1484> in the land<MG1093> of Canaan<MG5477>, He distributed<MG2624> their land<MG1093> as<MG2624> an<MG2624> inheritance<MG2624>—<i>all of which took</i> about<MG5613> 450<MG5071, 4004> years<MG2094>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>After<MG3326> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> He gave<MG1325> <i>them</i> judges<MG2923> until<MG2193> Samuel<MG4545> the prophet<MG4396>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> they asked<MG154> for a king<MG935>, and God<MG2316> gave<MG1325> them Saul<MG4549> the son<MG5207> of Kish<MG2797>, a man<MG435> of the tribe<MG5443> of Benjamin<MG958>, for forty<MG5065b> years<MG2094>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>After<MG2596> He had removed<MG3179> him, He raised<MG1453> up<MG1453> David<MG1160b> to be their king<MG935>, concerning whom<MG3739> He also<MG2532> testified<MG3140> and said<MG3004>, ‘I have found<MG2147> David<MG1160b>, the son of Jesse<MG2421>, a man<MG435> after<MG2596> My heart<MG2588>, who<MG3739> will do<MG4160> all<MG3956> My <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>will<MG2307>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>From the descendants<MG4690> of this<MG3778> man<MG3778>, according<MG2596> to promise<MG1860>, God<MG2316> has brought<MG71> to Israel<MG2474> a Savior<MG4990>, Jesus<MG2424>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>after John<MG2491> had proclaimed<MG4296>, before<MG4253> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>His coming<MG4383, 1529>, a baptism<MG908> of repentance<MG3341> to all<MG3956> the people<MG2992> of Israel<MG2474>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And while<MG5613> John<MG2491> was completing<MG4137> his course<MG1408>, he kept saying<MG3004>, ‘What<MG5101> do you suppose<MG5282> that I am<MG1510>? I am<MG1510> not <i>He.</i> But behold<MG2400>, one is coming<MG2064> after<MG3326> me, the sandals<MG5266> of whose<MG3739> feet<MG4228> I am<MG1510> not worthy<MG514> to untie<MG3089>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Brothers<MG435, 80>, sons<MG5207> of Abraham’s<MG11> family<MG1085>, and those<MG3588> among<MG1722> you who fear<MG5399> God<MG2316>, to us the message<MG3056> of this<MG3778> salvation<MG4991> has been sent<MG1821>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>For those<MG3588> who live<MG2730> in Jerusalem<MG2419>, and their rulers<MG758>, recognizing<MG50> neither Him nor<MG2532> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>declarations<MG5456> of the prophets<MG4396> which are read<MG314> every<MG3956> Sabbath<MG4521>, fulfilled<MG4137> <i>these</i> by condemning<MG2919> <i>Him.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And though they found<MG2147> no<MG3367> grounds<MG156> for <i>putting Him to</i> death<MG2288>, they asked<MG154> Pilate<MG4091> that He be executed<MG337>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>When<MG5613> they had carried<MG5055> out<MG5055> everything<MG3956> that was written<MG1125> concerning<MG4012> Him, they took<MG2507> Him down<MG2507> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>cross<MG3586> and laid<MG5087> Him in a tomb<MG3419>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But God<MG2316> raised<MG1453> Him from the dead<MG3498>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>and for many<MG4183> days<MG2250> He appeared<MG3708> to those<MG3588> who came<MG4872> up<MG4872> with<MG4872> Him from Galilee<MG1056> to Jerusalem<MG2419>, the very<MG3748> ones<MG3748> who<MG3748> are now<MG3568> His witnesses<MG3144> to the people<MG2992>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And we preach<MG2097> to you the good<MG2097> news<MG2097> of the promise<MG1860> made<MG1096> to the fathers<MG3962>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>that God<MG2316> has fulfilled<MG1603> this<MG3778> <i>promise</i> to those<MG3588> of us <i>who are the</i> descendants<MG5043> by raising<MG450> Jesus<MG2424>, as it is also<MG2532> written<MG1125> in the second<MG1208> Psalm<MG5568>: ‘YOU ARE MY SON<MG5207>; TODAY<MG4594> I HAVE FATHERED<MG1080> YOU.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><i>As for the fact</i> that He raised<MG450> Him from the dead<MG3498>, never<MG3371> again<MG3371> to return<MG5290> to decay<MG1312>, He has spoken<MG3004> in<MG3779> this<MG3779> way<MG3779>: ‘I WILL GIVE<MG1325> YOU THE HOLY<MG3741> <i>AND</i> FAITHFUL<MG4103> <i>MERCIES</i> OF DAVID<MG1160b>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Therefore<MG1360>, He also<MG2532> says<MG3004> in another<MG2087> <i>Psalm:</i> ‘YOU WILL NOT <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>ALLOW<MG1325> YOUR <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>HOLY<MG3741> ONE<MG3741> TO <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>UNDERGO<MG3708> DECAY<MG1312>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>For David<MG1160b>, after he had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>served<MG5256> God’s<MG2316> purpose<MG1012> in his own<MG2398> generation<MG1074>, fell<MG2837> asleep<MG2837>, and was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>buried<MG4369> among<MG4314> his fathers<MG3962> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>underwent<MG3708> decay<MG1312>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>but He whom<MG3739> God<MG2316> raised<MG1453> did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>undergo<MG3708> decay<MG1312>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> let it be known<MG1110> to you, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>brothers<MG435, 80>, that through<MG1223> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>Him forgiveness<MG859> of sins<MG266> is proclaimed<MG2605> to you, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>through<MG1722> Him everyone<MG3956> who believes<MG4100> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>freed<MG1344> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>from all<MG3956> things<MG3956>, from which<MG3739> you could<MG1410> not be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>freed<MG1344> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>through<MG1722> the Law<MG3551> of Moses<MG3475>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767>, see<MG991> that the thing<MG3004> spoken<MG3004> of in the Prophets<MG4396> does not come<MG1904> upon<MG1904> <i>you:</i> <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>‘LOOK<MG3708>, YOU SCOFFERS<MG2707>, AND BE<MG2296> ASTONISHED<MG2296>, AND <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>PERISH<MG853>; <t><p class="indent1">FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING<MG2038b> A WORK<MG2041> IN YOUR DAYS<MG2250>, <t><p class="indent1">A WORK<MG2041> WHICH<MG3739> YOU WILL NEVER<MG3756, 3361> BELIEVE<MG4100>, THOUGH<MG1437> SOMEONE<MG5100> SHOULD DESCRIBE<MG1555> IT TO YOU.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>As <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>Paul and Barnabas were going<MG1826> out<MG1826>, <i>the people repeatedly</i> begged<MG3870> to have these<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>things<MG4487> spoken<MG2980> to them the next<MG3342> Sabbath<MG4521>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when <i>the meeting of</i> the synagogue<MG4864> had broken<MG3089> up<MG3089>, many<MG4183> of the Jews<MG2453> and the God-fearing<MG4576> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>proselytes<MG4339> followed<MG190> Paul<MG3972> and Barnabas<MG921>, who<MG3748> were speaking<MG4354> to them and urging<MG3982> them to continue<MG4357> in the grace<MG5485> of God<MG2316>. <p class="hdg">Paul Turns to the Gentiles</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>The next<MG2064> Sabbath<MG4521> nearly<MG4975> all<MG3956> the city<MG4172> assembled<MG4863> to hear<MG191> the word<MG3056> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>the Lord<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>But when the Jews<MG2453> saw<MG3708> the crowds<MG3793>, they were filled<MG4092a> with jealousy<MG2205b> and <i>began</i> contradicting<MG483> the things<MG2980> spoken<MG2980> by Paul<MG3972>, and were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>blaspheming<MG987>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Paul<MG3972> and Barnabas<MG921> spoke<MG3955> out<MG3955> boldly<MG3955> and said<MG3004>, “It was necessary<MG316> that the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316> be spoken<MG2980> to you first<MG4413>. Since<MG1894> you repudiate<MG683> it and consider<MG2919> yourselves<MG1438> unworthy<MG3756, 514> of eternal<MG166> life<MG2222>, behold<MG2400>, we are turning<MG4762> to the Gentiles<MG1484>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>For so<MG3779> the Lord<MG2962> has commanded<MG1781> us, <t><p class="indent1">‘I HAVE APPOINTED<MG5087> YOU AS A LIGHT<MG5457> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>TO THE GENTILES<MG1484>, <t><p class="indent1">THAT YOU MAY <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>BRING<MG1510, 1519> SALVATION<MG4991> TO THE END<MG2078> OF THE EARTH<MG1093>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/13-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>When the Gentiles<MG1484> heard<MG191> this, they <i>began</i> rejoicing<MG5463> and glorifying<MG1392> the word<MG3056> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ag]</a></span>the Lord<MG2962>;
