<a href ="../mark/16.htm">Mark 16:1–8</a>; <a href ="../luke/24.htm">Luke 24:1–12</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>Now on the first <i>day</i> of the sabbaths Mary Magdelene comes early in the morning while it was yet dark to the tomb, and sees the stone taken out of the tomb. <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>She runs, therefore, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and says to them, "They took away the Lord out of the tomb, and we know not where they laid Him!" <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Peter, therefore, went forth, and the other disciple, and they were going to the tomb. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And the two were running together; and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb; <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>and, having stooped to look <i>within</i>, he beholds the linen cloths lying; yet he went not within. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Simon Peter, therefore, also comes, following him, and he went into the tomb; and beholds the linen cloths lying, <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and the napkin that was on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then went in, therefore, the other disciple also, who came first to the tomb; and he saw, and believed; <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>for as yet they knew not the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead.<p> <A name="11"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/16.htm#9">Mark 16:9–11</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The disciples, therefore, went away again to their own home.<p> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But Mary was standing without by the tomb, weeping. So, as she was weeping, she stooped to look into the tomb; <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and she beholds two angels in white, sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they say to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She says to them, "Because they took away my Lord, and I know not where they laid Him!" <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Having said these things, she turned back, and beholds Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Jesus saith to her, <FR>"Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?"<Fr> She, supposing Him to be the gardener, says to Him, "Sir, if thou didst bear Him away, tell me where thou didst lay Him, and I will take Him away!" <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Jesus saith to her, <FR>"Mary!"<Fr> Turning, she says to Him, in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher). <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Jesus saith to her, <FR>"Touch Me not; for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren, and say to them, "I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God."<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Mary Magdalene comes, proclaiming to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that He spake these things to her.<p> <A name="20"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Appears to the Disciples<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../luke/24.htm#36">Luke 24:36–49</a>; <a href ="../1_john/1.htm">1 John 1:1–4</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>When, therefore, it was evening, on that day, the first <i>day</i> of sabbaths; and, when, through fear of the Jews, the doors were shut, where the disciples were; Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, <FR>"Peace <i>be</i> to you!"<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And, having said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples, therefore, rejoiced, when they saw the Lord. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, said to them again, <FR>"Peace <i>be</i> to you! As the Father hath sent Me, I also send you."<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And, having said this, He breathed upon them, and said to them, <FR>"Receive ye the Holy Spirit.<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted to them; whosesoever <i>sins</i> ye retain, they are retained."<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Appears to Thomas<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>The other disciples, therefore, said to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and press my hand into His side, I will not believe."<p> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And, after eight days, again His disciples were within, and Thomas with them.
