In the Americas broadly and the United States specifically, colonization and transatlantic slavery set in motion the dynamics and differential racialized valuations that continue to underwrite particular forms of subjection, property, commerce, and territoriality. The conception of economies of dispossession introduced in this essay draws attention to the overriding importance of rationalities of abstraction and commensurability for racial capitalism. The essay problematizes the ways in which dispossession is conventionally treated as a self-evident and circumscribed practice of unjust taking and subtractive action. Instead, working across the lethal confluences of imperial conquest and racial capitalist predation, this essay critically situates the logic of propriation that organizes and underwrites predatory value in the historical present. Against the commensurabilities and rationalities of debt and finance capitalism, conditioned through the proprietary logics of settler colonialism and racial capitalism, the essay gestures toward alternative frameworks for building collective capacities for what the authors describe as a grounded relationality.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Alyosha Goldstein"},{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Chandan Reddy"}],"contributor":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Chandan Reddy"}],"dateCreated":"2019-02-19","dateModified":null,"datePublished":"2018-01-01","headline":"\"Predatory Value: Economies of Dispossession and Disturbed Relationalities\" / by Jodi A. They demonstrate the co-constitution and entanglement of slavery and colonialism from the conquest of the New World through industrial capitalism to contemporary financial capitalism. Among other topics, the essays explore the historical suturing of Blackness and Black people to debt, the violence of uranium mining on Indigenous lands in Canada and the Belgian Congo, how municipal property assessment and waste management software encodes and produces racial difference, how Puerto Rican police crackdowns on protestors in 2010 and 2011 drew on decades of policing racially and economically marginalized people, and how historic sites in Los Angeles County narrate the Mexican-American War in ways that occlude the war’s imperialist groundings. The volume’s analytic of colonial racial capitalism opens new frameworks for understanding the persistence of violence, precarity, and inequality in modern society. Contributors. It shows how particular appropriations of primitive accumulation in the context of neoliberalism not only treat the concept as, ultimately, external to the core logic of capitalism, but also ignore the ways racial domination and colonisation configure capital’s violence. Simultaneously, within racial capitalism scholarship, primitive accumulation is prone to conceptual stretching, often flattening disparate forms of land and labour expropriation. In contrast, through the analytic of ‘racial/ colonial primitive accumulation’, the author elucidates how normative wage- labour exploitation is predicated on settler colonialism and racial slavery and its afterlives. this thus adds precision to received understandings of capitalist expropriation, while also pushing the literature on racial capitalism beyond a white/Black binary.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Theorising 'racial/colonial primitive accumulation': settler colonialism, slavery and racial capitalism","attachmentId":66220060,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/46250352/Theorising_racial_colonial_primitive_accumulation_settler_colonialism_slavery_and_racial_capitalism","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Accumulation, Dispossession, and Debt: The Racial Logic of Global Capitalism—An Introduction
Paula Chakravartty, Denise Ferreira da Silva

American Quarterly, 2012

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Accumulation, Dispossession, and Debt: The Racial Logic of Global Capitalism—An Introduction","attachmentId":37024510,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/11512503/Accumulation_Dispossession_and_Debt_The_Racial_Logic_of_Global_Capitalism_An_Introduction","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Accumulation, Dispossession & Debt: The Racial Logic of Global Capitalism - Scholars in this tradition typically draw their inspiration-and framework-from Cedric Robinson's influential 1983 text, Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition. This article uses the work of Orlando Patterson to highlight some limits of "racial capitalism" as a theoretical project. First, the "racial capitalism" literature rarely clarifies what scholars mean by "race" or "capitalism." Second, some scholars using this conceptual language treat black subjectivity as a debilitated condition. An alleged byproduct of the Transatlantic slave trade, this debilitated form of black subjectivity derives from an African American exceptionalism that treats slavery as a form of abject status particular to capitalism without providing adequate theoretical justification or historical explanation. By contrast, we demonstrate how Patterson's insights about property, status, and capital offer an analysis of slavery more attentive to race, gender, sexuality, age, and ability. We close by using the "forensics of capital" to explore the notions of causality and protocols for determining who owes what to whom implicit in Patterson's concept of "social death."

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Racial capitalism","attachmentId":61756721,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/41603109/Racial_capitalism","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Art of Unpayable Debts: Poisoned reproduction, financial sovereignty and settler colonial bonds
Max Haiven

Thge Sociology of Debt (ed. By unpayable debts here I have in mind both, on the one hand, the proliferation of financial debts that cannot be repaid and, on the other, the subterranean collective moral or political debts that, though they cannot be quantified, are no less real or important for that. Starting with a brief consideration of the power and materiality of the imagination as a key dimension of capitalism’s financialization, I then turn to a reading of UK artist Darren Cullen’s Pocket Money Loans (2012-present), Argentine artist Marta Minujín’s Payment of Greek Debt to Germany with Olives and Art (2017), and Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore’s Gone Indian (2009). I am in search of two parallel counter-currents: In the first place, the way dominant systems and structures of financialized power impose unpayable financial debts as a methodology of domination that secures exploitation, extraction, oppression and/or inequality; In the second place the way that these same systems and structures of financialized power depend upon the disappearance, denial or diversion of the unpayable debts owed to or claimed by the dominated and exploited on which they are, ultimately, based. My effort here is not to provide a comprehensive theorization of the topic of unpayable debts, but rather to map some coordinates that, between them, triangulate the particular ways that, in the current financialized global order, a dialectics of unpayability plays out.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Art of Unpayable Debts: Poisoned reproduction, financial sovereignty and settler colonial bonds","attachmentId":58101609,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/38075525/The_Art_of_Unpayable_Debts_Poisoned_reproduction_financial_sovereignty_and_settler_colonial_bonds","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

"On the Reproduction of Race, Capitalism, and Settler Colonialism"
Alyosha Goldstein

Race & Capitalism

* For a revised and expanded version of this paper, see "'In the Constant Flux of Its Incessant Renewal': The Social Reproduction of Racial Capitalism and Settler Colonial Entitlement" [Uncorrected Proofs]: https://www.academia.edu/75944463/_In_the_Constant_Flux_of_Its_Incessant_Renewal_The_Social_Reproduction_of_Racial_Capitalism_and_Settler_Colonial_Entitlement_Uncorrected_Proofs_ This paper focuses on the ways in which property relations and prevailing conceptions of ownership are key sites for the social reproduction of race, capitalism, and the particularities of U.S. settler colonialism. I begin with a consideration of racial capitalism in relation to reproduction. I then discuss how “so-called primitive accumulation” continues to serve as an important referent in debates on the relationship between colonialism and capitalism. In conclusion, I briefly consider the ongoing fractionation of Native American land in the wake of the 1887 allotment act and the attrition of African American land ownership through the partition of tenancy-in-common of heirs’ property. I use these examples to show how the racial, colonial, gendered, and generational making of property and the capacity for possession are both a consequence of particular historical conditions of dispossession and continue to be reproduced in new ways in the present. Inheritance in this sense is quite literally a matter of social reproduction and a site of struggle over power and history in the context of the current moment.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"\"On the Reproduction of Race, Capitalism, and Settler Colonialism\"","attachmentId":56249968,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/35446492/_On_the_Reproduction_of_Race_Capitalism_and_Settler_Colonialism_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

"'In the Constant Flux of Its Incessant Renewal': The Social Reproduction of Racial Capitalism and Settler Colonial Entitlement"
Alyosha Goldstein

This chapter focuses on how property relations, family, and prevailing conceptions of ownership are key sites for the social reproduction of race, capitalism, and the particularities of U.S. settler colonialism.
