Two of them are refunctioned as a museum building and a temporary space, which is used mostly for biennial exhibitions. Museum spaces are an important part of everyday life in the context of social life. Visitors’ behaviors in a museum space is affected by the spatial order that we may also name as configuration, the attraction potential of the items that are exhibited in spaces, and the movement of the visitors in these spaces. Visual perception within the space in terms of accessibility and visibility that are affecting the integration levels are also keys to this investigation. In this study, temporary and permanent exhibition spaces will be scrutinized with a study based on the behavior of people in relation to configuration and exhibited materials. The main questioning is whether the type of the space (temporary/permanent) affecting the behavior of people in relation with the exhibited items and configuration or not. Two of the former warehouses are selected as case studies where Istanbul Modern Museum in Antrepo No.4 is a permanent museum space now; and Antrepo No.7 is recently used during Istanbul Design Biennial in 2014, which is a temporary exhibition space. Both of the warehouse structures that we call “Antrepo” are the parts of the main warehouses region between Karaköy and Kabataş in Istanbul; have similarities in the context of space configuration, size and environmental characteristics. In this study, both qualitative methods that are including the observation of behavioral modes and frequencies with on site analysis, and quantitative methods that are including the space syntax methodology are used. After these studies, results are overlapped to evaluate the relation between user behavior-space relationships and to compare permanent and temporary museum spaces. In conclusion, the behavior of people seemed affected by the type of the artworks mostly on the basis of the time spent over them. In both cases, behaviors of people are verifying attractor-movement-configuration theory. In temporary case, artworks are the major parameter affecting the behavior whereas in the permanent exhibition case interfacing spaces between interior and exterior are affecting the behavior, as well. In the temporary one, artworks are affecting the usage more than the permanent one, with their physical being besides their context. The further discussion in that sense is how future curation of exhibitions and architectural design of spaces may be evaluated through these types of venues.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Mehmet E Şalgamcıoğlu"},{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Deniz there is a region consists of warehouse spaces. Visual perception within the space in terms of accessibility and visibility that are affecting the integration levels are also keys to this investigation.\nIn this study, temporary and permanent exhibition spaces will be scrutinized with a study based on the behavior of people in relation to configuration and exhibited materials. After these studies, results are overlapped to evaluate the relation between user behavior-space relationships and to compare permanent and temporary museum spaces.\nIn conclusion, the behavior of people seemed affected by the type of the artworks mostly on the basis of the time spent over them. The further discussion in that sense is how future curation of exhibitions and architectural design of spaces may be evaluated through these types of venues.","publication_date":"2017,,","publication_name":"Proceedings of 11th International Space Syntax Symposium"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":null,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"Permanent and Temporary Museum Spaces: A Study on Human Behavior and Spatial Organization Relationship in Refunctioned Warehouse Spaces of Karaköy, Istanbul","broadcastable":true,"draft":null,"has_indexable_attachment":true,"indexable":true}}["work"]; window.loswp.workCoauthors = [6433442,32602804]; window.loswp.locale = "en"; window.loswp.countryCode = "SG"; window.loswp.cwvAbTestBucket = ""; window.loswp.designVariant = "ds_vanilla"; window.loswp.fullPageMobileSutdModalVariant = "control"; window.loswp.useOptimizedScribd4genScript = false; window.loswp.appleClientId = 'edu.academia.applesignon';</script><script defer="" src="https://accounts.google.com/gsi/client"></script><div class="ds-loswp-container"><div class="ds-work-card--grid-container"><div class="ds-work-card--container js-loswp-work-card"><div class="ds-work-card--cover"><div class="ds-work-cover--wrapper"><div class="ds-work-cover--container"><button class="ds-work-cover--clickable js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;swp-splash-paper-cover&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53857010,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;}"><img alt="First page of “Permanent and Temporary Museum Spaces: A Study on Human Behavior and Spatial Organization Relationship in Refunctioned Warehouse Spaces of Karaköy, Istanbul”" class="ds-work-cover--cover-thumbnail" src="https://0.academia-photos.com/attachment_thumbnails/53857010/mini_magick20190119-8864-n4f7tt.png?1547897376" /><img alt="PDF Icon" class="ds-work-cover--file-icon" src="//a.academia-assets.com/assets/single_work_splash/adobe.icon-574afd46eb6b03a77a153a647fb47e30546f9215c0ee6a25df597a779717f9ef.svg" /><div class="ds-work-cover--hover-container"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span><p>Download Free PDF</p></div><div class="ds-work-cover--ribbon-container">Download Free PDF</div><div class="ds-work-cover--ribbon-triangle"></div></button></div></div></div><div class="ds-work-card--work-information"><h1 class="ds-work-card--work-title">Permanent and Temporary Museum Spaces: A Study on Human Behavior and Spatial Organization Relationship in Refunctioned Warehouse Spaces of Karaköy, Istanbul</h1><div class="ds-work-card--work-authors ds-work-card--detail"><a class="ds-work-card--author js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="6433442" href="https://istanbultek.academia.edu/denizcabadak"><img alt="Profile image of Deniz Cabadak" class="ds-work-card--author-avatar" src="https://0.academia-photos.com/6433442/2602492/3022802/s65_deniz.cabadak.jpg" />Deniz Cabadak</a><a class="ds-work-card--author js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="32602804" href="https://istanbultek.academia.edu/Mehmet%C5%9Ealgamc%C4%B1o%C4%9Flu"><img alt="Profile image of Mehmet E Şalgamcıoğlu" class="ds-work-card--author-avatar" src="https://0.academia-photos.com/32602804/17297469/17407378/s65_mehmet._algamc_o_lu.jpg" />Mehmet E Şalgamcıoğlu</a></div><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2017, Proceedings of 11th International Space Syntax Symposium</p><p class="ds-work-card--work-abstract ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-md">In Istanbul between Karaköy-Kabataş there is a region consists of warehouse spaces. ARCHITECTURE: TRANSFORMATION OF WAREHOUSE 5 OF ISTANBUL, 2018</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">It’s believed in the modern ages that the existence of architecture date back to first human who needs to take shelter and creation of architecture belongs to a natural human instinct. Although architecture is born from natural human needs, architectural intellection which is shaped by aesthetic thoughts is formed for a long time in the history. Architectural productions which are shaped with various physical environments and communities are probably the most tangible productions that represent the community in the physical environments over the context. From the ancient history to present, architecture represents social classes, economic and cultural structures, rulerships and beliefs. Before the modern ages, architectural production’s representation is formed by architectural needs with the context. With the modern ages, its changed into representation of architectural production itself and its architect beyond the context. One of these architectural productions are museums which are exhibition spaces. It’s known that modern museums are started to build in 18th century. In the 19th century, museums are designed and differentiated by the common approach “specific spaces for specific objects”. In 20th century, exhibition spaces have become exhibition object itself beyond the “only” exhibition space. Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum which is still under construction, could seen as one of these cases. In the frame of the study, transformation of representation of architecture over the exhibition spaces is researched and compared with the similar historical spaces’ transformations. This article summarizes a range of research that examines the role of spatial layout in shaping the ways in which visitors explore, engage, and understand museums and museum exhibitions. It is demonstrated that behavior patterns are systematically linked to spatial characteristics of access and visibility. Furthermore, it is suggested that these patterns of access and visibility construct a spatial discourse that flows in its own right, although not entirely separate from the curatorial message.</p><div Although architecture was born due to a basic human need, architectural understanding shaped by aesthetic thinking in humankind has been created in a long process throughout history. Although architectural productions are shaped in different physical environments and in different societies, they have been one of the most important productions representing society in the physical environment in various contexts throughout history. Representative powers of architecture and spatiality have been known by societies since time immemorial and have also been used for specific purposes. Since ancient history, architecture has sometimes represented social classes and economic structure, sometimes power, and sometimes current cultural structure and beliefs of society. While architectural products represented situations expressed through an architectural need in the pre-modern era, with the arrival of the modern era they began to represent themselves or their architects, beyond place. Among these architectural products are museums, which are exhibition areas. In the 20th century, the transformation of exhibition areas into objects of exhibitions themselves, beyond the mere functional aspect of exhibiting, was very common around the world. An example of this is the Istanbul Contemporary Arts Museum, which is still under construction. The structure is among the seven warehouses (Warehouse 5) [1] designed by one of the most important Turkish architects, Sedad Hakkı Eldem1.The aim of this study is to investigate and evaluate the transformation of architectural representation through exhibition areas via the transformation of Warehouse 5 into the Istanbul Art and Sculpture Museum. In the study, similar examples of existing structures transformed into exhibition areas while having different functions in an historical context have been researched and compared with Warehouse 5. Additionally, a literature review has been carried out on the relationship established by issues of exhibition and representation with the city.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Exhibition Spaces in the Context of Representation of Architecture: Transformation of Warehouse 5 of İstanbul&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:99783413,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/98429910/Exhibition_Spaces_in_the_Context_of_Representation_of_Architecture_Transformation_of_Warehouse_5_of_%C4%B0stanbul&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/98429910/Exhibition_Spaces_in_the_Context_of_Representation_of_Architecture_Transformation_of_Warehouse_5_of_%C4%B0stanbul"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53857010,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53857010,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_53857010" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
