Some scholars argue that global industries are dominated by female workers as a result of the search for cheap labor. Drawing views from readymade garment (RMG) industries of Bangladesh, this paper argues that both economic choices of cheap labor and gendered discourses of work collaboratively contribute to feminizing the labor force. The bedrock of this export industry are poorly paid, migrant women and men. Marked by high rate of exploitation and precarious employment, garment workers are often perceived as a dispossessed lot without any means to resist their exploitation. What possibilities remain within this narrative to make room for everyday politics and resistances? Looking at the individual and collective struggles of garment workers in two southern Indian states, this article highlights the everyday organizing strategies of women resisting their 'disposibility'. Specifically, the article draws attention to women's life stories to demonstrate what can be learnt from them about the conditions under which to imagine, and come to, build labour unions. It has led to a decline in the participation of women in the formal sector and the deterioration in their conditions as workers. This article studies the export processing zones (EPZs) of India. By using qualitative data collected through ethnographic study of the women workers in the garment factories in Delhi, this article shows how the lack of labour standards or unions in these zones have made women workers more casualized, informal and vulnerable. Why do women outnumber male workers in export-processing industries while the same numbers of women are not represented in capital-intensive industries? In particular, she is able to capture how macro-level forces such as the global economy, dynamics of neoliberalism that promote the hiring of women as a presumably docile workforce, and labor control from the nation-state impact micro-level dynamics such as firm innovations in work arrangements, workers' economic compensation, gender wage inequality, internal conflicts among laborers, as well as labor strikes. Dr. Plankey-Videla is able to establish these multifaceted connections between macro-and micro-level processes by using a feminist ethnographic approach that involved complete immersion in her study site by laboring on the industrial sewing line and participating in strikes right along with the firm's workers. Theoretically, Dr. Plankey-Videla interjected feminist theories into structural labor processes to not only explain hegemony on the shop floor, but also to show how workers interject their own subjectivities into the workplace. In 2001, Nancy Plankey-Videla had a rare opportunity to witness these effects firsthand. Having secured access to one of Latin America&#39;s top producers of high-end men&#39;s suits in Mexico for participant-observer research, she laboured as a machine operator for nine months on a shop floor made up, mostly, of women. The firm had recently transformed itself from traditional assembly techniques, to lean, cutting-edge, Japanese-style production methods.
