How can we do so with regard to the built environment of a global city? I distinguish between two different approaches. The first starts from contradictions of capitalism such as the juxtaposition of overabundance and poverty and examines the ways in which these are represented in the cityscape. The second starts from a detailed exploration of practices of city making in order to explore the multiple different and often unexpected ways in which capitalist economies are justified and embedded in texts and images that are deemed to be socially meaningful. In other words, the first develops a critique of the capitalist city; the second allows a critique of capitalism through the city. These two approaches interrelate and overlap. However, their claims and scopes are not the same. Both have unique starting points and different directions of critique. In this essay I discuss these two approaches with regard to London's current tall building boom. At the time of writing, approximately 400 skyscrapers are in the planning stage or under construction in the city. Between fifty and eighty of them are towers that will be built by private developers not exclusively but to a large extent for industries that are pivotal for financial capitalism: banks, insurance and real estate companies as well as globally operating business service firms. These buildings are amongst the most visible manifestations of finance capital. Several of them are located in the City of London, which is London's historical core as well as a commercial center of Greater London. This essay, then, explores the relationship between history and financial capitalism or, better, the ways in which historiographical approaches are related to a critical engagement with urban processes under financialized capitalism. Ballard’s seminal novel High Rise as an expression of marginalization and class culture. Ballard’s dystopian vision holds within it traces of the history of buildings as expressions of power; from Victorian poorhouses, via Le Corbusier, to 1960’s public housing in Britain and the impact of post-war planning regulations. This paper explores the ways that housing has been used as a means of both control and an exertion of power by the dominant class. Spaces double as both an effective means of control of the subordinate or working class, and as a constant reminder of the dominance of the ruling class. From confinement within poor houses to vertical slums, these spaces create a marginalised culture of subordination that culminates in Ballard’s tower. Deluze, Lefebvre and others can help us to understand the structural and theoretical implications of the fictional structure in High Rise. We can see how expressions of power in housing are linked to and re-enforced by fiction, but that some spaces have the ability to disrupt this relationship and push back against the dominant paradigm. My approach builds on the works of authors such as Banham, Katz and Augé but, significantly, departs from that history through its emphasis on an examination of the way both real and fictional spaces can be seen as affective and reactive to each other. Through an examination of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’s play In the Heights as well as Ernesto Quiñonez’s novel Bodega Dreams, this article sheds light on the importance of community networks necessary in combating high levels of poverty and general lack of resources due to private, state, and federal disinvestment. It is my argument that multigenerational Latinx communities (re)assert their lived space—specific to the manner in which actual residents define and navigate the barrio on a daily basis—through the planning and construction of memorial murals. While gentrification displaces long-term working-class Latinx residents, memorial murals function as a means of affirming the collective history of the barrio, depicting shared struggles and lived experiences. Faced with minimal, if any, economic and political capital, residents often turn to alternative means to compensate for socioeconomic stratification and the conditions that breed economic neglect. The texts function as representational examples of the challenges associated with gentrification. Ballard's novel high-rise. It aims to explain the hyperbole of chaos within the book by heavily drawing on theories from Richard Sennett and his seminal work The Fall of Public Man. This interpretation is embedded in a brief history of architecture and the beginnings of high-rise construction without which it is near impossible to understand the situation presented in the eponymous novel. The paper concludes that high-rises are inherently problematic for social relations due to a lack of social spaces. Material value predominates human value. Meaning is lost; it is equal to the accumulation of tangible objects. The complexity of human condition in the 21st century has become one of the most widely explored topics among scholars, writers, and critics in American literature. Given that DeLillo's character Bucky Wunderlick exemplifies this complexity, this paper proposes to explore Wunderlick's treatment to commodification imposed upon him by the crowds (audience/masses) and market economy. In this paper, these crowds and the economic system are reduced to the notion of Pandemonium. It denotes chaos, a state of extreme confusion and disorder. My reading of Wunderlick's commodification in contemporary America grounds on Marx and Engels' definition of the concept. I strengthen my argument with Jean Baudrillard, Guy DeBord, Lucas, and Adorno.
