La percepción exterior y la asunción interna sustentan, en la baja edad media, una identidad definida como nación que encuentra sus elementos de cohesión en un bagaje cultural compartido, empezando por la lengua, y se expresa a través de instituciones que dan cabida a una invocada representatividad. Esta realidad, en el contexto de los contactos abiertos gracias a la expansión mediterránea, facilita la permeabilidad y ma-leabilidad del concepto identitario, lo que explica el sentido plural y diverso que acoge el gentilicio 'catalán'.
