Meningitis is a serious problem in newborns with high mortality and frequent neurological sequelae. In neonates, signs and symptoms of infections are often obscure and clinical examination cannot distinguish septicaemic babies with or without meningitis. Therefore, lumbar puncture is often not done in time and thus diagnosis of meningitis is missed. Our aim was to see the association of bacterial meningitis in neonatal septicaemia and their clinical and bacteriological profile. This study was performed at the neonatal ward of Kumudini Women’s Medical College Hospital from August 2007 to July 2009. All admitted newborns diagnosed as septicaemia clinically were enrolled prospectively. Detailed history was taken, thorough clinical examination performed, and blood culture, CSF study and other relevant investigations were done. Patients received standard medical care and followedup daily till discharge/death. The aim of this study is to evaluate the bacterial profile, antibiotics susceptibility pattern and associated risk factors of suspected septicaemia in neonates in this locality. Five hundred and forty seven consecutive blood samples from neonates admitted in the special baby care unit (SCBU), Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano between January 2007 and December 2008 were cultured aerobically and anaerobically in the Microbiology Department, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital by standard bacteriological methods. Antibiotic susceptibility pattern was done by disc diffusion methods. One hundred and fifty two (27.8%) positive blood cultures were obtained from the present study. The most frequently isolated organism was Staphylococcus aureus (25.0%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (21.1%) and Escherichia coli (15.0%). Gentamicin, ofloxacin, ceftriaxone and amoxycillin/clavulanate showed higher percentage antibiotic sensitivity pattern while chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole and ampicillin showed very low percentage antibiotic sensitivity pattern against the various bacterial isolates. The present study showed that Staphylococcus aureus is the leading isolate in neonatal septicaemia in Kano. Gentamicin and Ceftriaxone are recommended as first line drugs in the management of neonatal septicaemia in our locality.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Risk Factors and Bacterial Profile of Suspected Neonatal Septicaemia at a Teaching Hospital in Kano, Northwestern, Nigeria&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53731793,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/33737861/Risk_Factors_and_Bacterial_Profile_of_Suspected_Neonatal_Septicaemia_at_a_Teaching_Hospital_in_Kano_Northwestern_Nigeria&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/33737861/Risk_Factors_and_Bacterial_Profile_of_Suspected_Neonatal_Septicaemia_at_a_Teaching_Hospital_in_Kano_Northwestern_Nigeria"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="41485675" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/41485675/A_Study_of_Clinico_Bacteriological_Profile_of_Septicaemia_in_Neonates_and_Young_Infants_Admitted_In_Rims_Hospital_Imphal">A Study of Clinico-Bacteriological Profile of Septicaemia in Neonates and Young Infants Admitted In Rims Hospital, Imphal</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="2594470" href="https://independent.academia.edu/iosrjournals">IOSR Journals</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">IOSR Journals , 2019</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Objectives: To describe the clinical features of septicaemia in neonates and young infants. To find out the various bacteriological profile of the septicaemia and their antibiotic susceptibility. Materials and methods:A cross sectional study was conducted in the amongst 100 clinically suspected sepsis in neonates and young infants admitted in RIMS hospital based on inclusion criteria. Detailed history and clinical examination was taken and then blood culture and other necessary investigation was done.Chi-square test was employed to test the association and p-value of &lt;0.05 was taken as significant. Results:Septicaemia in neonates and young infants was more common amongst male (58%), normal vaginal delivery (65%) and low birth weight (59%) patients. The most common clinical presentation was poor feeding (78%) followed by lethargy (75%) and respiratory distress (61%). Culture positivity was seen in 30% of suspected sepsis patients. Gram negative to positive ratio was 1.14:1. Klebsiella was the most common organism detected followed by E.colispp, CONS and S. aureus. Among gram negative organisms Klebsiellaspp (9) was the most common followed by E.colispp (4), Pseudomonasspp (1), Acinetobacterspp (1) and Proteus spp (1). Among the gram positive organisms, Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CONS) and S.aureus were the most common (4 each) followed by MRSA and Enterococcus (3 each). All the gram negative isolates were sensitive to piperacillin/tazobactam, imipenem and meropenem. All the gram positive isolates were sensitive to linezolid and vancomycin. Conclusion: From our study we observed that the most common clinical presentation of sepsis were poor feeding, lethargy and respiratory distress, and the most common causative organisms were Klebsiellaspp, E.colispp, CONS and Staphylococcus aureus. Some of the organisms were resistant to routinely used antibiotics; hence their resistance pattern should be considered essential before deciding the empirical treatment. Depending on the antibiotics sensitivity pattern of the isolates, an antibiotic policy should be formulated in the hospital which should be changed from time to time if necessary.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;A Study of Clinico-Bacteriological Profile of Septicaemia in Neonates and Young Infants Admitted In Rims Hospital, Imphal&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:61656940,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/41485675/A_Study_of_Clinico_Bacteriological_Profile_of_Septicaemia_in_Neonates_and_Young_Infants_Admitted_In_Rims_Hospital_Imphal&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/41485675/A_Study_of_Clinico_Bacteriological_Profile_of_Septicaemia_in_Neonates_and_Young_Infants_Admitted_In_Rims_Hospital_Imphal"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="103671698" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/103671698/Bacteriological_Profile_of_Suspected_Neonatal_Septicaemia_and_Its_Relationship_with_Selected_Risk_Factors">Bacteriological Profile of Suspected Neonatal Septicaemia and Its Relationship with Selected Risk Factors</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="274505064" href="https://independent.academia.edu/BelalUddin47">Belal Uddin</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Medicine Today</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Introduction: Neonatal septicaemia is one of the major problem in neonatology with a high case fatality rate. Results: A total of 335 neonates were studied on clinical suspicion of septicaemia. 227/335(67.76%) blood cultures were sterile while 108/335 (32.24%) were positive by automated blood culture system. Culture positive cases when analysed showed growth of bacteria in 69/108 (63.89%) and fungi in 39/108 (36.11%). Staphylococcus aureus (11/34, 32.35%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (14/35, 40%) and non albicans Candida (30/39, 76.92%) were the predominant isolates amongst Gram positive, Gram negative and yeast ?like organisms respectively. Conclusion: Periodic surveillance of isolates from suspected cases of neonatal septicaemia must be carried out for the effective management of cases and formulating antibiotic policy at hospital settings.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Microbiological profile of neonatal septicaemia in a tertiary care hospital at Dehradun&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:43646014,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/23160766/Microbiological_profile_of_neonatal_septicaemia_in_a_tertiary_care_hospital_at_Dehradun&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/23160766/Microbiological_profile_of_neonatal_septicaemia_in_a_tertiary_care_hospital_at_Dehradun"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="66182243" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/66182243/Factors_infleuncing_neonatal_septicaemia_in_Maiduguri_north_eastern_Nigeria">Factors infleuncing neonatal septicaemia in Maiduguri, north-eastern Nigeria</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="65156807" href="https://independent.academia.edu/mustaphabello14">mustapha bello</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">African Journal of Clinical and Experimental Microbiology, 2016</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Factors infleuncing neonatal septicaemia in Maiduguri, north-eastern Nigeria&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:77474975,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/66182243/Factors_infleuncing_neonatal_septicaemia_in_Maiduguri_north_eastern_Nigeria&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/66182243/Factors_infleuncing_neonatal_septicaemia_in_Maiduguri_north_eastern_Nigeria"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="123110810" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/123110810/STUDY_OF_NEONATAL_MENINGITIS_IN_NEONATAL_SEPTICEMIA_CAN_WE_DO_BETTER">STUDY OF NEONATAL MENINGITIS IN NEONATAL SEPTICEMIA-CAN WE DO BETTER</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="320509347" href="https://independent.academia.edu/NationalJournalofMedicalResearch">National Journal of Medical Research</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">National Journal of Medical Research, 2014</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Introduction: Neonatal meningitis is most of the time remains undetected in all neonatal septicemias as they may not show any signs and symptoms of meningitis. This study was therefore set out to look for the neonatal meningitis in early and late onset neonatal septicemic patients. Material and Method: This is a cross sectional observational study done in a tertiary care hospital from October 2012 to august 2013 in 155 neonates. Preformed questionnaires were used to note sign of meningitis in babies with early or late onset septicemias. In all groups CSF examination was done to rule out meningitis. Result: Out of 155, 28(18%) were in grp A (with meningeal signs)and 126(82%) were in Group B(without any signs). It was found that all the patients having meningeal signs were having positive CSF while 58 (48%) newborn were having a positive CSF instead of no meningeal signs (p value significant). Mortality was high 21% in group A and was significantly low10% in group B due to early diagnosis. Conclusion: CSF is a septic screen diagnostic test for late onset septicemia and should be done in all high risk early onset septicemias are proven facts still it is not done at many centers.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;STUDY OF NEONATAL MENINGITIS IN NEONATAL SEPTICEMIA-CAN WE DO BETTER&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:117623052,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/123110810/STUDY_OF_NEONATAL_MENINGITIS_IN_NEONATAL_SEPTICEMIA_CAN_WE_DO_BETTER&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/123110810/STUDY_OF_NEONATAL_MENINGITIS_IN_NEONATAL_SEPTICEMIA_CAN_WE_DO_BETTER"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="63647938" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/63647938/Bacteriological_profile_antibiotic_susceptibility_and_factors_associated_with_neonatal_Septicaemia_at_Kilembe_mines_hospital_Kasese_District_Western_Uganda">Bacteriological profile, antibiotic susceptibility and factors associated with neonatal Septicaemia at Kilembe mines hospital, Kasese District Western Uganda</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="112925843" href="https://independent.academia.edu/GODFREYMANIRAKIZA">GODFREY MANIRAKIZA</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="193630000" href="https://independent.academia.edu/BensonMusinguzi">Benson Musinguzi</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">BMC, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Introduction: Neonatal septicaemia is one of the most common leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality in developing countries. It is estimated to affect more than 30 million people worldwide annually, potentially leading to 6 million deaths. Objective(s): To determine the prevalence, bacteriological profile, antibiotic susceptibility and factors associated with neonatal septicaemia among neonates suspected to sepsis at Kilembe mines hospital. Methods: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study, where purposive sampling technique was used and blood was drawn from 122 neonates suspected to sepsis attending Kilembe Mines Hospital during the period (July to November 2020). Specimens were inoculated in Brain heart infusion broth, transported to Fortportal Regional Referral Hospital, plated daily up to 7 days on blood, chocolate, MacConkey agar and incubated in aerobic and 5% carbondioxide. Pure colonies were identified by Gram stain, biochemical tests and antibiotic sensitivities obtained by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Associations were tested using Chi square with Fisher&#39;s exact or Yates correction tests where necessary and statistical significance was set at P &lt; 0.05. Stata (version 14) used for statistical analysis. Results: Blood cultures were positive in 59.0% cases with 55.5% male and 44.4% female. EOS was present in 56.9% and LOS 43.1% of the cases. Gram negative (56.9%) organisms were most implicated with neonatal septicaemia than Gram positives ones (43.1%). Gram positive organisms exhibited better susceptibility to amikacin, linezolid and vancomycin but more resistant to ampicillin and gentamicin. Of the aminoglycosides, amikacin exhibited a verge over netilmicin and gentamicin against Gram negative isolates. Risk factors of neonatal septicaemia were mother&#39;s age of ≥25 years, employed mothers, tertiary-level of education, SVD, ANC attendance of ≥4 times, UTI during pregnancy, PROMS, foul Smelling liquor, urban residence, neonatal birth weight of ≥2500 g, Apgar score 1st and 5th min ≥6 and resuscitation.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Bacteriological profile, antibiotic susceptibility and factors associated with neonatal Septicaemia at Kilembe mines hospital, Kasese District Western Uganda&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:76007822,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/63647938/Bacteriological_profile_antibiotic_susceptibility_and_factors_associated_with_neonatal_Septicaemia_at_Kilembe_mines_hospital_Kasese_District_Western_Uganda&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/63647938/Bacteriological_profile_antibiotic_susceptibility_and_factors_associated_with_neonatal_Septicaemia_at_Kilembe_mines_hospital_Kasese_District_Western_Uganda"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="16284549" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/16284549/Aetiology_risk_factors_and_immediate_outcome_of_bacteriologically_confirmed_neonatal_septicaemia_in_Mulago_hospital_Uganda">Aetiology, risk factors and immediate outcome of bacteriologically confirmed neonatal septicaemia in Mulago hospital, Uganda</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="35378769" href="https://independent.academia.edu/SarahKiguli">Sarah Kiguli</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">African health sciences, 2006</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Neonatal septicaemia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality.
