The majority of for neonatal septicaemia may be due to transplacental transmission, contaminated instruments, respirators used for resuscitation and inadequate handwashing by health care personnel. Material \u0026amp;amp; methods: This prospective study was carried out on suspected cases of neonatal septicaemia by analyzing their blood cultures and determination of antibiotic sensitivities on the isolates. Results: A total of 335 neonates were studied on clinical suspicion of septicaemia. 227/335(67.76%) blood cultures were sterile while 108/335 (32.24%) were positive by automated blood culture system. Culture positive cases when analysed showed growth of bacteria in 69/108 (63.89%) and fungi in 39/108 (36.11%). Staphylococcus aureus (11/34, 32.35%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (14/35, 40%) and non albicans Candida (30/39, 76.92%) were the predominant isolates amongst Gram positive, Gram negative and yeast ?like organisms respectively. Conclusion: Periodic surveillance of isolates from suspected cases of neonatal septicaemia must be carried out for the effective management of cases and formulating antibiotic policy at hospital Material and methods: In this retrospective study the laboratory data of blood culture reports of 256 neonates admitted to NICU, People's Hospital, Bhopal with clinical suspicion of septicaemia from July 2012 to December 2013 was analyzed. Results: Total 256 samples were received during the study period of which 174 (68%) were found to be positive of which 118(67.8%), 50(28.7%) and 5(2.87%) had Gram positive, Gram negative and Candidal infection respectively. Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the commonest isolates. Gram positive organisms were found to be sensitive to Linezolid, Pristinomycin, Cefoxitin and Vancomycin. Imipenem, Levofloxacin and 3 rd generation Cephalosporins were found to be effective against Enterobacteriaceae group. Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter sp. were found to be susceptible to Imipenem, Aztreonam and Piperacillin tazobactam. Materials and methods:A cross sectional study was conducted in the amongst 100 clinically suspected sepsis in neonates and young infants admitted in RIMS hospital based on inclusion criteria. Detailed history and clinical examination was taken and then blood culture and other necessary investigation was done.Chi-square test was employed to test the association and p-value of <0.05 was taken as significant. Results:Septicaemia in neonates and young infants was more common amongst male (58%), normal vaginal delivery (65%) and low birth weight (59%) patients. The most common clinical presentation was poor feeding (78%) followed by lethargy (75%) and respiratory distress (61%). Culture positivity was seen in 30% of suspected sepsis patients. Gram negative to positive ratio was 1.14:1. Klebsiella was the most common organism detected followed by E.colispp, CONS and S. aureus. Among gram negative organisms Klebsiellaspp (9) was the most common followed by E.colispp (4), Pseudomonasspp (1), Acinetobacterspp (1) and Proteus spp (1). Among the gram positive organisms, Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CONS) and S.aureus were the most common (4 each) followed by MRSA and Enterococcus (3 each). All the gram negative isolates were sensitive to piperacillin/tazobactam, imipenem and meropenem. All the gram positive isolates were sensitive to linezolid and vancomycin. Conclusion: From our study we observed that the most common clinical presentation of sepsis were poor feeding, lethargy and respiratory distress, and the most common causative organisms were Klebsiellaspp, E.colispp, CONS and Staphylococcus aureus. Some of the organisms were resistant to routinely used antibiotics; hence their resistance pattern should be considered essential before deciding the empirical treatment. The aim of this study is to evaluate the bacterial profile, antibiotics susceptibility pattern and associated risk factors of suspected septicaemia in neonates in this locality. Five hundred and forty seven consecutive blood samples from neonates admitted in the special baby care unit (SCBU), Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano between January 2007 and December 2008 were cultured aerobically and anaerobically in the Microbiology Department, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital by standard bacteriological methods. Antibiotic susceptibility pattern was done by disc diffusion methods. One hundred and fifty two (27.8%) positive blood cultures were obtained from the present study. The most frequently isolated organism was Staphylococcus aureus (25.0%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (21.1%) and Escherichia coli (15.0%). Gentamicin, ofloxacin, ceftriaxone and amoxycillin/clavulanate showed higher percentage antibiotic sensitivity pattern while chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole and ampicillin showed very low percentage antibiotic sensitivity pattern against the various bacterial isolates. The present study showed that Staphylococcus aureus is the leading isolate in neonatal septicaemia in Kano. Neonatal septicaemia continues to be a major causes of neonatal mortality & morbidity around the world (approximately 25% of neonatal deaths) & mostly in the developing countries. In INDIA according to National perinatal data base (NNPD)2002-2003 , the incidence of neonatal septicaemia has been reported to be 30/1000 live births .Increased prevalence of extended of spectrum beta lactamase producing bacteria & methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and multidrug resistant Gram Negative Bacilli is a major concern in neonatal intensive care units worldwide .Neonatal sepsis is broadly divided into two types according to the age of onset : Early-onset sepsis (EOS < 72 hrs) and late onset sepsis (>= 72 Hrs-28 days,LOS) Early onset sepsis is acquired during fetal life , delivery or at nursery. Newborn blood culture and sensitivity testing are important tools in the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis and in the institution of early antibiotic treatment. Material and Methods: This study was conducted by analyzing the blood cultures and the sensitivity reports of 100 newborns who were admitted to the NICU over a period preceding one year. Results: Of the 100 newborns, 32 (32%) showed positive blood culture reports. Out of the 32 positive blood cultures, 19 (59.4%) showed positivity for Coagulase negative Staphylococcus, 7 (21.9%) showed positivity for Staphylococcus aureus, 3 (9.4%) showed positivity for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 1 (3.1%) showed positivity for Enterococci, 1 (3.1%) showed positivity for Micrococci and 1 (3.1%) showed positivity for Flavobacteria. Overall, most of the neonatal sepsis was caused by Coagulase negative staphylococcus. The sensitivity pattern of the first line of antibiotics was as follows; out of the 19 Coagulase negative staphylococcus strains, 13 (68.42%) showed sensitivity to amikacin and ciprofloxacin, 15 (78.95%) to sparfloxacin, 9 (47.37%) to erythromycin, 10 (52.63%) to azithromycin, 12 (63.16%) to gentamicin and cephalexin and 5 (26.32%) to penicillin. Out of the 7 Staphylococcus aureus strains, 6 (85.71%) showed sensitivity to amikacin, 5 (71.43%) to erythromycin, 4 (57.14%) to sparfloxacin and ciprofloxacin, 3 (42.86%) to azithromycin and cephalexin and 1(14.29%) to penicillin and gentamicin. Out of the 3 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, 2 (66.7%) were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and amikacin and 1 (33.3%) was sensitive to to sparfloxacin, azithromycin and gentamicin. Enterococci showed sensitivity to sparfloxacin, cephalexin, and ciprofloxacin. Flavobacteria showed sensitivity to gentamicin, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin and amikacin. Their resistance patterns were also studied. Conclusion: Coagulase negative staphylococcus is the most common cause for neonatal sepsis in the NICU. Positive blood cultures may help provide clinical diagnosis, as well as a specific etiological diagnosis. Neonatal septicemia constitutes an important cause of morbidity and mortality amongst neonates in India. However, with presently available antimicrobial agents, neonatal septicemia may be treated successfully. Early diagnosis and proper management of neonatal septicemia can bring down the morbidity and mortality substantially. Hence, the present study was undertaken to study the bacteriological profile of neonatal septicemia cases and their antimicrobial sensitivity pattern for planning strategy in the management of these cases. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was carried out in the CNBC and MYH, department of microbiology and paediatrics, M.G.M. medical college and M.Y. hospital, Indore, from January to December in 1000 blood cultures. Identification of organism was done as per standard methods like gram’s staining, cultural characteristics, motility and biochemical reactions. Results: In our study done on 1000 neonatal blood cultures, we found 42.2 % cultures were positive, in which 51.3 % were males and 48.7 % were female neonates. We found 52.8 % were Early onset septicaemia (EOS) (<2 days) and 47.2 % were late onset septicemia (LOS) (>2 days). Among 1000 neonates 543 were institutional delivered (inborn) and 457 were out born referred from other hospitals; 64.7 % were term, 35.3 % were preterm, 80.1 % were normal deliveries and 19.9 % were LSCS. The bacteriological profile of neonatal sepsis is under constant change with the advances in the diagnosis and treatment. Blood culture is still the mainstay of investigation of potential sepsis in spite of the recent advances in molecular diagnosis of fungal and bacterial sepsis. Most common bacterial organisms responsible for neonatal septicaemia in developing countries like Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, are Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter etc. The present study was undertaken to describe the spectrum of the isolates in cases of neonatal septicaemia, and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. The study was carried out over a one year period. Method: A total of 357 suspected patients of neonatal septicaemia were included in the study. Blood samples were collected with aseptic precautions preferably prior to the initiation of empiric antibiotic therapy. The bottles were incubated aerobically at 37 0 C for 7 days and subcultured on blood agar and Mac Conkey agar. If growth appeared the isolates were processed as per standard microbiological techniques and the isolates were identified. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was performed on Mueller‑Hinton agar plates by modified Kirby‑Bauer disk diffusion method as per Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute guidelines. Results: Of the 357 samples studied, growth was observed in 154 samples. Gram positive organisms constituted 37.66% and gram negative bacilli constituted 62.34% of the isolates. The predominant pathogens isolated were Klebsiella species, Coagulase Negative Staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus followed by Non fermenting gram negative bacilli. 71.43% of the Staphylococcus aureus isolates were found to be methicillin resistant.96.05% of the Enterobacteriaceae were found to be Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) producers. 33.33% of the Pseudomonas isolates were found to be metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) producers. Conclusion: This study shows that Klebsiella species, Coagulase Negative Staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus and Non-fermenting gram negative bacilli were the commonest organisms associated with Neonatal sepsis. An alarmingly high rate of MRSA and ESBL producers was observed. It is estimated to affect more than 30 million people worldwide annually, potentially leading to 6 million deaths. Objective(s): To determine the prevalence, bacteriological profile, antibiotic susceptibility and factors associated with neonatal septicaemia among neonates suspected to sepsis at Kilembe mines hospital. Methods: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study, where purposive sampling technique was used and blood was drawn from 122 neonates suspected to sepsis attending Kilembe Mines Hospital during the period (July to November 2020). Specimens were inoculated in Brain heart infusion broth, transported to Fortportal Regional Referral Hospital, plated daily up to 7 days on blood, chocolate, MacConkey agar and incubated in aerobic and 5% carbondioxide. Pure colonies were identified by Gram stain, biochemical tests and antibiotic sensitivities obtained by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Associations were tested using Chi square with Fisher's exact or Yates correction tests where necessary and statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Stata (version 14) used for statistical analysis. Results: Blood cultures were positive in 59.0% cases with 55.5% male and 44.4% female. EOS was present in 56.9% and LOS 43.1% of the cases. Gram negative (56.9%) organisms were most implicated with neonatal septicaemia than Gram positives ones (43.1%). Gram positive organisms exhibited better susceptibility to amikacin, linezolid and vancomycin but more resistant to ampicillin and gentamicin. Of the aminoglycosides, amikacin exhibited a verge over netilmicin and gentamicin against Gram negative isolates.
