These stone tools have been defined as stemmed projectile points whose blades were intensively maintained resulting in asymmetric shapes. Besides, it was proposed the use of these artefacts as knives because their morphology when the artefacts were discarded. Trying to establish a more complete version of the life history of these artefacts, from projectile points to knives, as it is suggested by the techno-typological analysis, we developed a research design that includes several analytical microscopic and compositional techniques to identify the uses that were preserved over time. Information obtained through microwear use traces analysis and the study of microscopic residues (microfossils and chemical residues) in blades and stems, indicates that these artefact were used in several functions. Tools were last used as knives in generalized tasks, for plant and animal processing. The plant material processed includes roasted or dehydrated tuberous/root plants for food. The processing of animal material (skin, flesh and/or bone) was also developed with the artifacts as knives. As projectile points were used for penetration of animal preys and then were recycled as knives. Besides, evidences for hafting (foreshafts or handles) and adhesives use, were found. The use and life history results obtained from analyses of microfossil and other residue, microwear use traces, chemical and techno-typological, were mutually consistent. This contributed to the discussion of artifact’s life history and resource processing by the Middle holocene hunter-gatherers of South Central Andes.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Salomón The artifacts come from a mid-Holocene hunter-gatherers' occupation of the La Mesada site in Patagonia. The perspective involves the examination of use-wear traces, hafting wear, and organic micro-residues. The experimental program that supports this perspective is presented. Use-wear traces and organic residues were recognized in the distal portion of the archaeological artifacts. Meanwhile, some tools, in the proximal and middle portion, present alterations attributable to hafting in combination with animal and vegetable residues. The production sequence of a particular artifact design is discussed, with distinctive aspects regarding regional trends. Practices related to plant management were identified that allow the evaluation of mobility circuits and interchange mechanisms of these societies.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Microwear and Plant Residue Analysis in a Multiproxy Approach from Stone Tools of the Middle Holocene of Patagonia (Argentina)","attachmentId":116212275,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/121295962/Microwear_and_Plant_Residue_Analysis_in_a_Multiproxy_Approach_from_Stone_Tools_of_the_Middle_Holocene_of_Patagonia_Argentina_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Use-wear on bone and lithic tools to discuss functional site variability in the Paraná Basin: The Cerro Lutz archaeological site, Late Holocene, Argentina
Romina Silvestre, Natacha Buc

BEYOND USE-WEAR TRACES: GOING FROM TOOLS TO PEOPLE BY MEANS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL WEAR AND RESIDUE ANALYSES, 2021

The Paraná river basin was inhabited by different hunter-gatherer groups during the last portion of the Late Holocene. This is a large region with different ecological units which include the Riverside shoals in the south and the plains in the north. Between both areas, material continuities are seen in general terms, but also particularities involve the site formation process of the Cerro Lutz archaeological site. It is a shell midden with two occupational components, the later one with mortuary activities. Although similarities were noted in the bone and lithic assemblages from both areas, it is not clear if they function in the same manner. In this paper, microscopic evidence of bone and lithic tools from Cerro Lutz will be analysed and discussed in the light of the published data from the Riverside shoals. Results confirmed that in both areas artefacts were used on different actions and materials, showing differences in the lithic assemblage. While use-wear in southern sites show bone use, soft materials were recorded in Cerro Lutz, suggesting a differential use of technology that could be related to raw material availability.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Use-wear on bone and lithic tools to discuss functional site variability in the Paraná Basin: The Cerro Lutz archaeological site, Late Holocene, Argentina","attachmentId":66692764,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/47750874/Use_wear_on_bone_and_lithic_tools_to_discuss_functional_site_variability_in_the_Paran%C3%A1_Basin_The_Cerro_Lutz_archaeological_site_Late_Holocene_Argentina","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Retouched artifacts production in three hunter-gatherer contexts from Tierra del Fuego (southernmost South America, Argentina): Avilés 1, Avilés 3 and Herradura 1
Lucas Turnes

This paper aims to identify technological decisions involved in the production of retouched lithic artifacts recovered from three Late Holocene archaeological sites located in the northeast of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). More specifically, the main goal is to assess whether there is any relationship among raw material selection, retouching intensity, and the morphology of retouched artifacts. Through the analysis of several correlations between the knapping quality of the different raw materials employed and the index of invasiveness and curvature, it is inferred that raw materials were selected according to their homogeneous texture and convex shape in order to produce long retouched edges. As most of the retouched artifacts have been produced on unifacial blanks, using unipolar debitage techniques which does not require specific knapping skills, it is proposed that similarities found in the three archaeological sites can be explained as a result of oral transmission of basic technological knowledge.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Retouched artifacts production in three hunter-gatherer contexts from Tierra del Fuego (southernmost South America, Argentina): Avilés 1, Avilés 3 and Herradura 1 ","attachmentId":34550045,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8100837/Retouched_artifacts_production_in_three_hunter_gatherer_contexts_from_Tierra_del_Fuego_southernmost_South_America_Argentina_Avil%C3%A9s_1_Avil%C3%A9s_3_and_Herradura_1","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

On wedges and bones: Archaeological studies of use-wear and residue analysis from Late Holocene occupations in the Southern Pampean Hills (Alero Deodoro Roca, Córdoba, Argentina)
Jose Maria Caminoa

Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, 2017

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"On wedges and bones: Archaeological studies of use-wear and residue analysis from Late Holocene occupations in the Southern Pampean Hills (Alero Deodoro Roca, Córdoba, Argentina)","attachmentId":112732631,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/116667097/On_wedges_and_bones_Archaeological_studies_of_use_wear_and_residue_analysis_from_Late_Holocene_occupations_in_the_Southern_Pampean_Hills_Alero_Deodoro_Roca_C%C3%B3rdoba_Argentina_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Parker, B. The site was occupied between 11.477 ± 133 cal. BP and 1.087 ±78 cal. BP, and the archaeological record for this occupation is related to the archaeological Lagoa Santa Tradition. However, the artifact was found in deeper and relative older archaeological levels, in a different stratigraphy context. The technological analysis confirms its exotic nature, not corresponding to the Lagoa Santa industry, but to another Paleoindian archaeological tradition instead. Its technological features are similar to the limaces related to Itaparica Tradition lithic industries. It's important to notice that this is the only limace found at Lagoa Santa until now, and archaeological context did not allow us to associate it to the Lagoa Santa Tradition. In order to have an insight on the use of this artifact we performed some technological and micro-remain analysis. Various starch grains and other materials were recovered from the active parts of the artifact. The microbotanical analysis indicated the use of the artifact for processing starchy plants. As far as we know, this is the most ancient evidence of the processing of starchy plants in the Americas.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Before Lagoa Santa: Micro-remain and technological analysis in a lithic artifact from the Itaparica industry","attachmentId":50009021,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/29568300/Before_Lagoa_Santa_Micro_remain_and_technological_analysis_in_a_lithic_artifact_from_the_Itaparica_industry","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Exploitation of allochthonous raw materials in hunter–gatherer contexts: Archaeological sites of Fagnano Lake, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
María Estela Mansur, Hernan De Angelis

Quaternary International 375 pp124-134, 2015

The exploitation of allochthonous raw materials has been registered in several archaeological sites of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The best-known examples are those of green obsidian (considered to originate from a source in the southern Magellan strait) and industrial glass (which was adopted after the Europeans' arrival). A new case is the Miraflores silicified tuff, identified at Kami 1 archaeological site (Late Holocene), on the southern shore of Fagnano Lake, which comes from an outcrop located to the north of the island, more than 200 km away. Since the identification of this raw material in Kami 1, a techno-functional experimental program was carried out in order to characterize the properties of this Miraflores silicified tuff, particularly regarding manufacturing techniques, as well as behavior of edges during different utilization processes. Experimental tools made on samples from the Miraflores outcrop were used to work on various materials (wood, leather and bone) and analysed through low and high power microscopy. This article has three main purposes. The first is to present the results of the experimental study. The second is to discuss the techno-functional analysis of lithic archaeological artifacts on silicified tuff from Kami 1. The third is to evaluate the causes for selection of this raw material for the tool morphologies and uses identified in the site, as well as possible acquisition strategies implemented by hunter–gatherer societies of the central area of Tierra del Fuego.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Exploitation of allochthonous raw materials in hunter–gatherer contexts: Archaeological sites of Fagnano Lake, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina","attachmentId":37905533,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/12978282/Exploitation_of_allochthonous_raw_materials_in_hunter_gatherer_contexts_Archaeological_sites_of_Fagnano_Lake_Tierra_del_Fuego_Argentina","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Manufacturing and use of the wooden artifacts.
