For this purpose, several types of guanaco bone tools present in northern sites of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego (South America) were replicated. The results enable us to: 1) differentiate and define the microscopic traces related to the manufacture techniques implemented in the production sequence: scraping, abrasion and sawing as well as 2) identify and describe the use-wear traces of different resources (wood, hide and bark). The results have allowed to identify the manufacture traces that were formed in each stage of the production process as well as the use-wear traces of different working procedures. Likewise, the data obtained have enabled us to identify the differences in the use of dry and fresh bones, their effectiveness in different labour processes and their respectively diagnostic traces. These artifacts were found in La Esmeralda, a prehistoric shell midden settled in the Uruguayan Atlantic Coast. This work is the first attempt to use microscopic techniques to detect and interpret use and technological traces on bone tools recovered in Uruguay. This settlement is being studied in the project led by Dr. Schulze and Dr. Pérez Roldán. La Montesita is located in the state of Aguascalientes, and it dates back approximately to the Epiclassic period, from 600-900 AD. The settlement has a semi-sparce distribution, where most of the housing units are located on the Montesita hill, hence the name. We analyzed a set of 24 objects made of bone. Within the set, the presence of awls stands out. Our analysis will focus on both its typological classification and a technological and functional analysis through the observation de visu of the pieces, a microscopic study and their comparison. Likewise, we emphasize the distribution of the bone tools in the different spatial contexts of the settlement. Medina</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Documenta Praehistorica, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The aim of the article is to assess the role played by bone tools at Boyo Paso 2 (Sierras of Córdoba, Argentina), an open-air site interpreted as a basecamp seasonally occupied by mobile mixed foraging and farming people c. 900–700 years BP. The results suggest that diverse activities were carried out on-site, including hunting or warfare, tool production, food processing and rituals.
