As my friends were enthralled by the then-dazzling graphics of <i><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjQ1vYAcHQg" rel="nofollow">Mario 64</a></i>, I was using my lumbering mastodon of a 486/66 mhz computer as a way to re-experience some of the best console games of years past. Having downloaded programs that turned my computer into a keyboard-controlled Atari, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, or Sega Genesis, and having sought out the websites that hosted the game files, I was mollified by playing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac_man">Pac Man</a> (1980), <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania_(video_game)">Castlevania</a> (1986), and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroids_(video_game)">Asteroids</a> (1979), amongst dozens of others.</p> <p><a href="http://cdn8.openculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Atari-2600-Wood-4Sw-Set.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-82428 native-lazyload-js-fallback" alt="SONY DSC" src="https://www.openculture.com/wp-content/plugins/native-lazyload/assets/images/placeholder.svg" width="480" height="277" loading="lazy" data-src="https://cdn8.openculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Atari-2600-Wood-4Sw-Set.jpg"><noscript><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-82428" alt="SONY DSC" src="https://cdn8.openculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Atari-2600-Wood-4Sw-Set.jpg" width="480" height="277"></noscript></a></p> <p>Earlier this year, the Internet Archive set aflame the hearts of nostalgic gamers everywhere by <a href="http://www.openculture.com/2013/10/vintage-video-games-in-your-web-browser.html">opening the Historical Software Collection</a>, making classics such as <i><a href="https://archive.org/details/Karateka_1984_Broderbund">Karateka</a> </i>(1984) and <i><a href="https://archive.org/details/Akalabeth_1980_California_Pacific_Computer">Akalabeth</a></i> (1980) freely available and removing the need to download any additional software components. <a href="https://blog.archive.org/2013/12/26/a-second-christmas-morning-the-console-living-room/">On Boxing Day</a>, the generous souls at the Internet Archive announced a follow-up: the <a href="https://archive.org/details/consolelivingroom">Console Living Room</a>. For those wishing to relive the joys of early consoles, sourcing classic titles and downloading emulation programs to turn your computer into a virtual console is no longer necessary. Using nothing more than their browser (Firefox is recommended), users can enjoy the full (albeit temporarily soundless) experience of ‘70s and ‘80s classics and rarities on the <a href="http://archive.org/details/atari_2600_library">Atari 2600</a>, <a href="http://archive.org/details/atari_7800_library">Atari 7800 ProSystem</a>, <a href="http://archive.org/details/coleco_colecovision_library">ColecoVision</a>, <a href="http://archive.org/details/library_magnavox_odyssey2">Magnavox Odyssey²</a>, and <a href="https://archive.org/details/bally_astrocade_library">Astrocade</a> consoles. Google’s collection, <a href="http://www.wired.com/opinion/2013/12/what-getty-google-others-just-did-that-will-make-us-more-creative-than-ever/" rel="nofollow">writes Drue Kataoka at <i>Wired</i></a>, is part of a “big deal […] it signals a broader, emerging ‘open content’ art movement.” “Besides the Getty,” Kataoka notes, this movement to digitize fine art collections includes efforts by “Los Angeles’ LACMA… as well as D.C.’s National Gallery of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, Baltimore’s Walters Art Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery. And Google. Yes, Google.” Google is working hard to defuse this “yes, Google” reaction, posting frequent updates to its collection, already a magnificent phenomenon: “Imagine seeing an image of the <a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/the-fall-of-the-rebel-angels/ewEs_8lOXkz7tQ"><i>Fall of the Rebel Angels</i></a> by Pieter Breuegel the Elder,” writes Kataoka, “or Vincent van Gogh’s <a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/irises/DgFVFAJo_30MeQ"><i>Irises</i></a>, in high resolution.” Now, you can, thanks to Google’s astonishingly vast digital archive.</p> <div class="oc-video-wrapper"> <div class="oc-video-container"> <span class="youtube"><iframe loading="lazy" title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="505" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/4ZdCByYeNRU?wmode=transparent&fs=1&hl=en&showsearch=0&rel=0&theme=dark" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></span> </div> <p>  </p></div> <p></p> <p>In the <a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/project/art-project">Art Project</a>, you can stroll on over to Portugal’s Museu do Caramulo, for example, which Google describes as “an unusual museum in a small town” off the beaten path. There, you can see this macabre <a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/still-life/GQHpRkhXaz9g6A?projectId=art-project" rel="nofollow">1947 Picasso still life</a> or <a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/roman-horseman-in-iberia/zQGtWMIjPu6PFg?projectId=art-project" rel="nofollow">this 1954 Salvador Dali portrait of a Roman horseman in Iberia</a> (above). Then head over to the other side of the world, where the Adachi Museum of Art in Japan contains 165,000 square meters of Japanese garden: “The Dry Landscape Garden, The White Gravel and Pine Garden, the Moss Garden, and The Pond Garden.” It also features gorgeous paintings like Yokoyama Taikan’s 1931 <em><a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/autumn-leaves/7wGv2-aJaMR26g?projectId=art-project">Autumn Leaves</a></em> and Hishida Shunso’s adorable 1906 <em><a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/cat-and-plum-blossoms/BwGvjDB8VLU0zQ?projectId=art-project">Cat and Plum Blossoms</a>.</em> Dozens of smaller collections like these sit comfortably alongside such extensive and well-known collections as New York’s <a href="http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/moma">MoMA</a> and <a href="http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/met">Metropolitan Museum of Art</a> and Florence’s <a href="http://www.googleartproject.com/museums/uffizi">Uffizi</a>. The company signed partnership agreements with 151 institutions in 2012 and the Art Project has grown since then to include over 57,000 digital representations of famous and not-so-famous works of art. Most recently, it has added work to the <a href="http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/collections">online collections of 34 different partner institutions</a>. Google’s announcement on its official <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2013/12/feast-your-eyes-on-new-works-added.html">blog</a> takes a themed approach, presenting versions of several <i><a href="http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/t/trompeloeil.html">trompe l’oeil</a> </i>(“fool the eye”) works that have just joined the Art Project. <em>Trompe l’oeil</em> is a gimmick as old as antiquity, and Google gives us several examples, beginning with the stylish, understated Brazilian train station mural right above by Adriana Varejao. Below, see the ceiling of Italy’s <a href="http://www.archeobo.arti.beniculturali.it/ferrara/note_en.htm">National Archaeological Museum of Ferrara</a>, a much more classical (or Baroque) approach to <i>trompe l’oeil</i> that displays some typical elements of the period, including elaborate geometric designs, lots of gold, and well-dressed figures staring down at viewers or floating off into the heavens. It did so in the form of 1930’s “<a href="http://www.und.edu/instruct/cjacobs/ProductionCode.htm" rel="nofollow">Motion Picture Production Code</a> (also known as the Hays Code),” which “set up a small jury to review films for content,” at first “still without teeth and largely mocked by industry insiders.” But that changed in a big way when “the American Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church organized <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Legion_of_Decency">The Legion of Decency</a> and, in 1934, with the support of Protestant and Jewish Organizations, began calling for boycotts of films deemed unacceptable. Eventually, filmmakers began to simply defy the Hays Code; you can watch Otto Preminger’s famous example of just that, the 1953 comedy <em>The Moon is Blue </em>(possessed, censors said, of “an unacceptably light attitude towards seduction, illicit sex, chastity, and virginity”). In 1968, the weakened Code’s replacement arrived: the Motion Picture Association of America’s Ratings system and its still-familiar G, PG, R, and X (PG-13 was introduced in 1984; NC-17 replaced X in 1990). Quaint as these measures may now seem, the lesson tells us that controversy has remained. “Some may say that films were sexier and scarier under the censorship of the production code – for nothing that can be seen is as tantalizing and horrifying as what the imagination and anticipation can conjure. Einstein and Maric’s <a href="http://www.physics.utah.edu/~jui/3375/Class%20Materials%20Files/y2007m09d05/love_lett.pdf">love letters</a> have inspired the short film above, <i>My Little Witch</i> (in Serbian, I believe, with English subtitles) and several critical re-evaluations of Einstein’s life and Maric’s influence on his early thought. Some historians have even suggested that Maric—who was also trained in physics—made contributions to Einstein’s early work, a claim <a href="http://www.pbs.org/ombudsman/2006/12/einsteins_wife_the_relative_motion_of_facts.html">hotly disputed</a> and, it seems, poorly substantiated.</p> <div class="oc-center-da"> <div data-fuse="22871471544"></div> </div> <p>The letters—written between 1897 and 1903 and only discovered in 1987—reveal a wealth of previously unknown detail about Maric and the marriage. While the controversy over Maric’s influence on Einstein’s theories raged among academics and viewers of PBS’s controversial documentary, <i><a href="http://www.pbs.org/opb/einsteinswife/">Einstein’s Wife</a></i>, a scandalous personal item in the letters got much <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/1996/11/06/arts/dark-side-of-einstein-emerges-in-his-letters.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm">better press</a>. As Einstein and Mileva’s relationship deteriorated, and they attempted to scotch tape it together for the sake of their children, the avuncular pacifist wrote a chilling list of “conditions,” in outline form, that his wife must accept upon his return. <a href="http://www.listsofnote.com/2012/04/einsteins-demands.html" rel="nofollow"><em>Lists of Note</em> transcribes them</a> from Walter Isaacson’s biography <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1ai094s">Einstein: His Life and Universe</a></i>:</p> <p style="padding-left: 120px;"><em>CONDITIONS</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>A. You will make sure:</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 90px;"><em>1. that my clothes and laundry are kept in good order;</em><br> <em> 2. that I will receive my three meals regularly in my room;</em><br> <em> 3. that my bedroom and study are kept neat, and especially that my desk is left for my use only.</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>B. You will renounce all personal relations with me insofar as they are not completely necessary for social reasons. Specifically, You will forego:</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 90px;"><em>1. my sitting at home with you;</em><br> <em> 2. my going out or travelling with you.</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>C. You will obey the following points in your relations with me:</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 90px;"><em>1. you will not expect any intimacy from me, nor will you reproach me in any way;</em><br> <em> 2. you will stop talking to me if I request it;</em><br> <em> 3. you will leave my bedroom or study immediately without protest if I request it.</em></p> <p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>D. You will undertake not to belittle me in front of our children, either through words or behavior.</em></p> <p>While it may be unfair to judge anyone’s total character by its most glaring defects, there’s no way to read this without shuddering. Although Einstein tried to preserve the marriage, once they separated for good, he did not lament Mileva’s loss for long. Manjit Kumar <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=vNv-MekPHSkC&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=%22that+my+clothes+and+laundry+are+kept+in+good+order%22+einstein&source=bl&ots=vCAxVP4co_&sig=Rptah7H3qdvSX3uWXgOgRDIEdd4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=YTvAUs2mPJKpkAeZuoCoCA&ved=0CEIQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=%22that%20my%20clothes%20and%20laundry%20are%20kept%20in%20good%20order%22%20einstein&f=false">tells us in <i>Quantum: Einstein Bohr, and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality</i></a> that although “Mileva agreed to his demands and Einstein returned”</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>[I]t could not last. At the end of July, after just three months in Berlin, Mileva and the boys went back to Zurich. As he stood on the platform waving goodbye, Einstein wept, if not for Mileva and the memories of what had been, then for his two departing sons. But within a matter of weeks he was happily enjoying living alone “in my large apartment in undiminished tranquility.”</em></p> <p>Einstein prized his solitude greatly. Another remark shows his difficulty with personal relationships. While he eventually fell in love with his cousin Elsa and finally divorced Mavic to marry her in 1919, that marriage too was troubled. Elsa died in 1936 soon after the couple moved to the U.S. Not long after her death, Einstein <a href="http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/getting-to-know-einsteins-wives.html">would write</a>, “I have gotten used extremely well to life here. I live like a bear in my den…. This bearishness has been further enhanced by the death of my woman comrade, who was better with other people than I am.”</p> <p>Einstein’s personal failings might pass by without much comment if had not, like his hero Gandhi, been elevated to the status of a “<a href="http://www.2ubh.com/features/Einstein.html" rel="nofollow">secular saint</a>.” Yet, it is also the personal inconsistencies, the weaknesses and petty, even incredibly callous moments, that make so many famous figures’ lives compelling, if also confusing. As Einstein scholar John Stachel says, “Too much of an idol was made of Einstein. In 1943, Rockwell exhausted himself to such a degree that, while completing the Franklin Delano Roosevelt-inspired series of paintings entitled <i><a href="http://www.nrm.org/2013/08/norman-rockwells-four-freedoms/" rel="nofollow">Four Freedoms</a></i>, he lost 15 pounds over the course of seven months. This drop in weight is, perhaps, all the more shocking when given some context: Rockwell was <a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/37/Rockwell-Norman-LOC.jpg">far from being a corpulent man</a>. In fact, when the then 23-year-old artist attempted to enlist as a serviceman in the U. S. Navy during World War I, he was <a href="http://earlnoahbernsby.hubpages.com/hub/norman-p-rockwell-bio" rel="nofollow">judged to be eight pounds underweight</a>, standing at six feet and tipping the scales at 140 pounds. Rockwell, however, was not to be deterred by something so trivial as his bodily composition. He gorged himself on bananas and doughnuts when he came home that evening. The next day, Navy recruiters dully welcomed the sufficiently bloated Rockwell to the fold.</p> <p>When Rockwell did eat, we know that he had a penchant for oatmeal cookies. At least two of the artist’s letters detailing instructions for making this choice snack are posted online. Their babies<i> </i>are the most physically adroit, their toddlers the most generous, their elementary schoolers the most culinarily daring.</p> <p>Pride in one’s children’s gifts is understandable. A straightforward brag or two is permissible. But after that, I’d really like some corroborating evidence, such as the <a href="http://publicdomainreview.org/2013/12/05/account-of-a-very-remarkable-young-musician-1769/?utm_content=buffer3d6be&utm_source=buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer" rel="nofollow">Honourable Daines Barrington’s account of meeting a “very remarkable young musician”</a> whose father had been dragging him around the continent on a 3‑and-a-half year concert tour.</p> <div class="oc-center-da"> <div data-fuse="22871471544"></div> </div> <p>Clearly, <a href="http://www.classicalarchives.com/mozart.html#tvf=tracks&tv=about">Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart</a> (1756–1791) was a very accomplished kid, but the term “prodigy” must have stuck in <a href="http://royalsociety.org/" rel="nofollow">Friend of the Royal Society</a> Barrington’s craw, even after he’d attended some of the boy’s public performances. Determined to let science be the judge, he devised a series of on-the-spot challenges designed to evaluate the boy’s musicianship beyond the rigorous practice schedule imposed by his disciplinarian father. (We all saw <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ruwgGTVd9w">Amadeus</a>, right?)</p> <p>Barrington’s detailed description of these experiments would make a gimcrack Science Fair project for any little Einstein smart enough to get through 18th-century typography without throwing a tantrum because the s’s all look like f’s (see the 18th century text below). It might take a recreational mathemusician on the order of <a href="http://vihart.com/" rel="nofollow">Vi Hart</a> to truly appreciate the complexity of the tasks that Barrington assigned his young subject (something to do with having him play five contradictory lines simultaneously…).</p> <p>I can interpret the data with regard to some of Barrington’s other findings. Mozart, he wrote, not only looked like a young child, he ditched his harpsichord to chase around a cat and ran about the room “with a stick between his legs by way of a horse.” So it’s not the classical period equivalent of a stage mom lying about her kid’s age to better his chances at an audition.
