jiangi and Early Theropod Evolution","grobid_abstract":"The Middle Jurassic was a critical time in the evolution of theropod dinosaurs, highlighted by the origination and initial radiation of the large-bodied and morphologically diverse Tetanurae. Middle Jurassic tetanurans are rare, but have been described from Europe, South America and China. In particular, China has yielded a number of potential basal tetanurans, but these have received little detailed treatment in the literature. Chief among these is Monolophosaurus jiangi, known from a single skeleton that includes a nearly complete and well-preserved skull characterized by a bizarre cranial crest. Here, we redescribe the skull of Monolophosaurus, which is one of the most complete basal tetanuran skulls known and the only quality source of cranial data for Middle Jurassic Chinese theropods. The cranial crest is atomized into a number of autapomorphic features and several characters confirm the tetanuran affinities of Monolophosaurus. However, several features suggest a basal position within Tetanurae, which contrasts with most published cladistic analyses, which place Monolophosaurus within the more derived Allosauroidea. Cranial characters previously used to diagnose Allosauroidea are reviewed and most are found to have a much wider distribution among Theropoda, eroding an allosauroid position for Monolophosaurus and questioning allosauroid monophyly. The use of phylogenetic characters relating to theropod cranial crests is discussed and a protocol for future use is given. The systematic position of Guanlong wucaii is reviewed, and a basal tyrannosauroid affinity is upheld contrary to one suggestion of a close relationship between this taxon and Monolophosaurus.","publication_date":"2010,,","publication_name":"Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society","grobid_abstract_attachment_id":"45618663"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":null,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"The skull of Monolophosaurus jiangi (Dinosauria: Theropoda) and its implications for early theropod phylogeny and evolution","broadcastable":true,"draft":null,"has_indexable_attachment":true,"indexable":true}}["work"]; However, the positions of genera Cryolophosaurus, Sinosaurus, Monolophosaurus and Acrocanthosaurus and clade Megaraptora remain controversial and a few phylogenetic analyses question the monophyly of both Megalosauroidea and Allosauroidea. This presentation re-evaluates the phylogeny of non-coelurosaurian Tetanurae by re-examining highly distinct and size- and ecomorphology-independent states of several characters used in previous analyses. Cryolophosaurus possesses a small lesser trochanter, indicating it is among the most basal neotheropods (Coelophysis, Dilophosaurus). Sinosaurus retains a distally expanded scapula of the most basal neotheropods but shares with Ceratosauria & Tetanurae a large lesser trochanter, suggesting that it is more derived than the former but less derived than the latter. Spinosauridae and Carcharodontosauridae (except Acrocanthosaurus and Eocarcharia) possess a lesser trochanter extending proximally to the ventral margin of femoral head and lack a maxillary fenestra, suggesting that they are the most basal tetanurans. Piatnitzkysauridae, Metriacanthosauridae, Neovenator, Megaraptora, Megalosauridae, Acrocanthosauridae (Acrocanthosaurus, Eocarcharia) and Allosauridae (Allosaurus, Saurophaganax) share with basal Coelurosauria (Zuolong, Tanycolagreus, Coelurus, Tyrannosauroidea) a lesser trochanter extending proximally to the middle of femoral head (lesser trochanter extends proximally to the dorsal margin of femoral head in Megaraptora, Tyrannosauridae, and ornithomimosaur Beishanlong). The above basal tetanurans and Monolophosaurus also share with Coelurosauria a maxillary fenestra. Megalosauridae, Monolophosaurus, Acrocanthosauridae and Allosauridae share with Coelurosauria a posteroventrally expanded surangular contact of dentary and a metacarpal IV less than 25% of metacarpal III or absent, forming a clade Avetheropoda. Monolophosaurus, Acrocanthosauridae and Allosauridae also share with basal Coelurosauria (Zuolong, Tanycolagreus, Tyrannosauroidea, Ornitholestes) a robust dorsal ramus of quadratojugal, forming a clade Euavetheropoda. Allosauridae share with Coelurosauria a medially open maxillary antrum (evolved independently in Metriacanthosauridae and Eocarcharia).</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"A re-evaluation of several character states in non-coelurosaurian Tetanurae (Dinosauria: Theropoda) with implications for phylogeny of basal tetanurans","attachmentId":89823182,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/21172650/A_re_evaluation_of_several_character_states_in_non_coelurosaurian_Tetanurae_Dinosauria_Theropoda_with_implications_for_phylogeny_of_basal_tetanurans","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/21172650/A_re_evaluation_of_several_character_states_in_non_coelurosaurian_Tetanurae_Dinosauria_Theropoda_with_implications_for_phylogeny_of_basal_tetanurans"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="48262291" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/48262291/A_longirostrine_tyrannosauroid_from_the_Early_Cretaceous_of_China">A longirostrine tyrannosauroid from the Early Cretaceous of China</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="148063865" href="https://independent.academia.edu/PeterMakovicky">Peter Makovicky</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2010</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"A longirostrine tyrannosauroid from the Early Cretaceous of China","attachmentId":66966988,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/48262291/A_longirostrine_tyrannosauroid_from_the_Early_Cretaceous_of_China","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/48262291/A_longirostrine_tyrannosauroid_from_the_Early_Cretaceous_of_China"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="293183" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/293183/7_The_Phylogeny_and_Taxonomy_of_the_Tyrannosauridae">7. salleei, gen. et sp. nov., from exposures of the upper part of the Shishugou Formation at the Wucaiwan locality, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China. Zuolong has a large, inclined quadrate foramen that extends onto the medial surface of the quadratojugal, an unusually large fovea capitis on the femoral head, and an apomorphically large distal condyle of metatarsal III with a medially projecting flange on the extensor surface. Radiometric dating of the Shishugou Formation constrains the age of the specimen to the beginning of the Late Jurassic (Oxfordian). A cladistic analysis of Zuolong salleei in a broadly sampled theropod data matrix recovers it as a basal coelurosaur. These data make Zuolong one of the oldest coelurosaur fossils yet known that preserves both cranial and postcranial bones.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"A basal coelurosaur (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the Late Jurassic (Oxfordian) of the Shishugou Formation in Wucaiwan, People's Republic of China","attachmentId":47652796,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/9769589/A_basal_coelurosaur_Dinosauria_Theropoda_from_the_Late_Jurassic_Oxfordian_of_the_Shishugou_Formation_in_Wucaiwan_Peoples_Republic_of_China","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/9769589/A_basal_coelurosaur_Dinosauria_Theropoda_from_the_Late_Jurassic_Oxfordian_of_the_Shishugou_Formation_in_Wucaiwan_Peoples_Republic_of_China"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="33888207" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/33888207/The_Chinese_colossus_an_evaluation_of_the_phylogeny_of_Ruyangosaurus_giganteus_and_its_implications_for_titanosaur_evolution">The Chinese colossus: an evaluation of the phylogeny of Ruyangosaurus giganteus and its implications for titanosaur evolution</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="343718" href="https://independent.academia.edu/NSassani">Nima Sassani</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="49130039" href="https://independent.academia.edu/bricksmashtv2">Gunnar T Bivens</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">For many years the precise taxonomy of Titanosauria has been a puzzle, and even today only certain segments of this vast clade are well-understood. The phylogenetic positions of many titanosaurs are murky, though specimens often still await rigorous analysis. One of the largest examples is the massive Chinese titanosaur Ruyangosaurus giganteus – though largely incomplete, the holotype is distinct enough to indicate strong phylogenetic affinities with a specific subgroup of titanosaurs. A review of previous literature on Ruyangosaurus, referred tentatively to Andesauridae, shows that this classification is based on three weak, non-diagnostic characters. Ruyangosaurus differs from taxa traditionally included in Andesauridae in at least 20 characters of the torso, femur, and tibia. Several plesiomorphies of Ruyangosaurus are extremely rare in titanosauria except for the clade Lognkosauria and its close relatives. The vertebra initially described as a posterior cervical is most likely an anterior dorsal, with a strong resemblance to that of Puertasaurus. The posterior dorsal of Ruyangosaurus shares synapomorphies with Mendozasaurus and Dreadnoughtus. The femur clusters close to the femora of Malawisaurus, Traukutitan, and Pitekunsaurus. Ruyangosaurus is here recovered as a lognkosaurian, with significant implications for the distribution and evolution of that group and the paleobiology of Mid-Cretaceous China.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Chinese colossus: an evaluation of the phylogeny of Ruyangosaurus giganteus and its implications for titanosaur evolution","attachmentId":53862627,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/33888207/The_Chinese_colossus_an_evaluation_of_the_phylogeny_of_Ruyangosaurus_giganteus_and_its_implications_for_titanosaur_evolution","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/33888207/The_Chinese_colossus_an_evaluation_of_the_phylogeny_of_Ruyangosaurus_giganteus_and_its_implications_for_titanosaur_evolution"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="7682217" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/7682217/Osteology_of_Huabeisaurus_allocotus_Sauropoda_Titanosauriformes_from_the_Upper_Cretaceous_of_China">Osteology of Huabeisaurus allocotus (Sauropoda: Titanosauriformes) from the Upper Cretaceous of China</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="3844860" href="https://sbsuny.academia.edu/MichaelDEmic">Michael D'Emic</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Osteology of Huabeisaurus allocotus (Sauropoda: Titanosauriformes) from the Upper Cretaceous of China","attachmentId":34214429,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/7682217/Osteology_of_Huabeisaurus_allocotus_Sauropoda_Titanosauriformes_from_the_Upper_Cretaceous_of_China","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/7682217/Osteology_of_Huabeisaurus_allocotus_Sauropoda_Titanosauriformes_from_the_Upper_Cretaceous_of_China"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":45618663,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":45618663,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_45618663" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
