Geographically, Jerusalem is situated on a hill, so one would literally go "up" to reach it. Spiritually, Jerusalem is the center of Jewish worship and the location of the Temple, making it a focal point for Jesus' mission. The Greek word for "going up" (&#7936;&#957;&#945;&#946;&#945;&#943;&#957;&#969;, anabain&#333;) often implies an ascent, not just in physical terms but also in terms of purpose and destiny. Jesus' journey to Jerusalem is a deliberate move towards the fulfillment of His redemptive work, underscoring His obedience to the Father's will.<p><b>He took the twelve disciples aside</b><br />The act of taking the disciples "aside" indicates a moment of intimacy and importance. The Greek word for "aside" (&#954;&#945;&#964;' &#7984;&#948;&#943;&#945;&#957;, kat' idian) suggests a private setting, away from the crowds. This reflects Jesus' intentionality in preparing His closest followers for the events that are about to unfold. The number "twelve" is significant, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and by extension, the foundation of the new covenant community. Jesus is investing in these men who will carry forward His mission after His departure.<p><b>and said to them on the way</b><br />The phrase "on the way" (&#7952;&#957; &#964;&#8135; &#8001;&#948;&#8183;, en t&#275; hod&#333;) is not just a geographical note but also a metaphor for discipleship. The "way" is a journey, a path of following Jesus that involves learning, growth, and sometimes suffering. In the early Christian community, followers of Jesus were often referred to as "the Way" (<a href="/acts/9-2.htm">Acts 9:2</a>), highlighting the journey of faith. Jesus' teaching here is part of the ongoing process of preparing His disciples for the challenges and responsibilities they will face. The journey to Jerusalem is both literal and symbolic of the path of obedience and sacrifice that Jesus models for His followers.<div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/matthew/20.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(17) <span class= "bld">And Jesus going up to Jerusalem.</span>--The narrative is not continuous, and in the interval between <a href="/context/matthew/20-16.htm" title="So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.">Matthew 20:16-17</a> we may probably place our Lord's "abode beyond Jordan" (<a href="/john/10-40.htm" title="And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he stayed.">John 10:40</a>), the raising of Lazarus, and the short sojourn in the city called Ephraim (<a href="/john/11-54.htm" title="Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went there to a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.">John 11:54</a>). This would seem to have been followed by a return to Persea, and then the journey to Jerusalem begins. The account in St. Mark adds some significant facts. "Jesus went" (literally, <span class= "ital">was going</span>--implying continuance) "before them." It was as though the burden of the work on which He was entering pressed heavily on His soul. The shadow of the cross had fallen on Him. He felt something of the conflict which reached its full intensity in Gethsemane, and therefore He needed solitude that He might prepare Himself for the sacrifice by communing with His Father; and instead of journeying with the disciples and holding "sweet converse" with them, went on silently in advance. This departure from His usual custom, and, it may be, the look and manner that accompanied it, impressed the disciples, as was natural, very painfully. "They were amazed, and as they followed, were afraid." It was apparently as explaining what had thus perplexed them that He took the Twelve apart from the others that followed (including probably the Seventy and the company of devout women of <a href="/luke/8-2.htm" title="And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,">Luke 8:2</a>) and told them of the nearness of His passion.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/matthew/20.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verses 17-19</span> - <span class="accented">Third and fuller prediction of Jesus</span> <span class="accented">sufferings and death</span>. He was accompanied by many followers, but what he had now to impart was not intended to be divulged to all, but was reserved for the chosen twelve. The mass could not have heard it without offence. <span class="cmt_word">In the way.</span> The Vulgate omits these words. The Revised Version, on good authority, alters the received order, reading, <span class="accented">and in the way he said unto them</span>.
