These media representations have tended to overlook the diverse political, economic, social and cultural experiences of individual African countries – a situation that has led to the uncritical lumping together of African nations under the appellation of ‘Africa’. When this happens, the specific and unique conditions of her 55 nations are squeezed into a one-size-fits-all media frame. Historical and ideological forces, both from within and outside the continent, have conspired to impose this fate on Africa. The philosophies of negritude and the Organisation of African Unity were among the complicit internal forces helping to sustain such views. To evaluate this phenomenon, this essay examines the underpinnings of the framing and representation of ‘Africa’ in global media through a review of the literature, and seeks to answer the question of whether the continent can speak for itself, using four country-specific examples. Current media practices within the African continent, enabled by local media policies and infrastructure, have tended to rhetorically position countries primarily in accordance with their national identities, while attributing the African appellation as a secondary frame of representation.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Prosper Yao It brings together leading researchers and prominent journalists to explore representation of the continent, and the production of that image, especially by international news media. The book highlights factors that have transformed the global media system, changing whose perspectives are told and the forms of media that empower new voices. This introductory chapter by the book editors assesses Africa’s changing media image, examines the new image-makers, and reviews the geopolitics impacting upon that image.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

IF WESTERN MEDIA GOT AFRICA WRONG, HOW RIGHT IS AFRICAN MEDIA REPORTING AFRICA? Rather, beyond these tripartite functions, the power of the media is primarily derived from how their narratives are structured and interpreted in order to (re) construct reality. This paper underscores the fact that beyond the text of media reportage, the Western media in the coverage of international news on and about Africa also consciously or inadvertently define the reality of the content. Therefore, it argues that there are other sides to Africa that have been completely ignored by the west which highlights the sincere effort of the continent at genuine socio-political changes in spite of its current challenges. And to beam the searchlight on the deliberately ignored aspects of the continents efforts at nation building would require that our " charity, " indeed " must begin at home. "

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"IF WESTERN MEDIA GOT AFRICA WRONG, HOW RIGHT IS AFRICAN MEDIA REPORTING AFRICA? The chapter argues that the bleak picture of the continent that the African media peddles through its overwhelming emphasis on negative news and subjective reportage of the activities of African governments to its national and international publics serve largely to water the seeds of internal discord and Afro-pessimism. It can therefore be argued that the African mass media has continued to contribute to the pessimistic imaging of Africa through its one-sided reportage of the continent. This has far-reaching consequences for not only democratic sustenance but also Africa’s human and economic development. The chapter suggests that in view of the power that communication wields over matters of political and economic development and the media’s role in this equation, the African mass media needs to awaken to the obligation of partnering with government to set and nurture societal goals and aspirations, articulating a shared vision of progress for both the state and the continent

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The media and neo-colonisation: examining the relevance of African thought and philosophy in the discourse of decolonisation
Yao Ladzekpo

EJOTMAS: Ekpoma Journal of Theatre and Media Arts, 2022

The media and all that it represents have often had insidious content. People have often used the media to promote their own agenda be it in the area of marketing, finance, governance, entertainment and sports. In Africa, foreign media outlets have dwelled so much on Africa. On most occasions, the media content is fraught with damaging content, which only reinforces earlier existing imagery of Africa as backward continent needing forms of confrontation and actions. This is actually a form of neo-colonisation. In this discussion, we look at the media, an agent of neo- colonisation and how an appreciation of African thought or philosophy can enable a better understanding of the media. The discussion is grounded on cultural norm theory, personal observations of the media landscape in Africa and a brief content analysis of Kwaw Ansah’s Heritage Africa (1989). Four British national newspapers (The Guardian, Financial Times, The Times, and Daily Mail) and a mixed research approach (content analysis and semi-structured interviews) were used. A total sample of 7027 articles were utilized, while nine journalists were interviewed. This study discovered that the British newspapers’ coverage of Africa was dominated by Western journalists and the news sources used in the articles were a proportionate mixture of both African and Western sources, especially in the quality newspapers. It also uncovered that Africa's global influence, in addition to other factors impact on the UK newspapers’ coverage of Africa. To some; Africa’s sluggish development is masterminded by foreign developed nations while to others, answers to the continent’s development trends lie in its own decisions. Within this broad continuum is a trajectory in media discourse that labels advanced nations, particularly the Western press, as mouthpieces of portraying Africa negatively. This seems to kick-start Serwornoo to explore the Afro-pessimism discourse from the lens of Africa’s own media to the rest of the world. By this, the book specifically aims at exploring how the Ghanaian media has portrayed the continent of Africa in their foreign news pages in an attempt to put forward new trends in the patterns of Afro-pessimism. The book fills a significant gap in news gathering and selection in relation to dominant themes which tends to be a product of ideological issues, organisational conditions and behaviour of journalists in the running of media establishments. The book is presented in simple language, well organised and researched with strong theoretical basis to benefit academia and industry. This reviewer argues that colonial bonding is becoming a weaker argument in the process of news gathering and selection.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Perspectives on the media in "another Africa"
Marie-Soleil Frère

African Journalism Studies, 2012

When discussing the media and journalism practices ‘in Africa’, a question soon emerges: Which Africa is this? Or rather, which Africas are these? Indeed, among the diversity of situations observed on the continent, relatively distinct dynamics seem to come to the fore, in particular between the media in English- and French-speaking sub- Saharan countries, so that any generalisation about ‘African media’ appears rash.
