However, Scott (2015, 1) points out that a systematic study of the representation of Africa in western media is still missing, and that general conclusions on the present discourses in news content cannot be made. For one, most of the research only includes mainstream media, news genres and formats and thus forms ‘an insufficient basis for reaching any firm, generalisable conclusions’. To address this, we focus on the representation of Africa in ‘MO* Magazine’, a Belgian alternative news magazine that puts emphasis on the Global South, including an extensive coverage of Africa. Applying Critical Discourse Analysis, we examined all articles that focus on Africa during one year in the magazine’s outlets of 2015 and 2016 in addition to in-depth interviews with the editorial staff. This explorative study investigates how MO* Magazine constructs its alternative identity in the context of African news coverage. We argue that a mere empirical focus on features and narratives generally attributed to mainstream media, such as the presence of Afro-pessimistic and -optimistic discourses, is not sufficient to reach conclusions about the alternative identity of a magazine. These media representations have tended to overlook the diverse political, economic, social and cultural experiences of individual African countries – a situation that has led to the uncritical lumping together of African nations under the appellation of ‘Africa’. When this happens, the specific and unique conditions of her 55 nations are squeezed into a one-size-fits-all media frame. Historical and ideological forces, both from within and outside the continent, have conspired to impose this fate on Africa. The philosophies of negritude and the Organisation of African Unity were among the complicit internal forces helping to sustain such views. To evaluate this phenomenon, this essay examines the underpinnings of the framing and representation of ‘Africa’ in global media through a review of the literature, and seeks to answer the question of whether the continent can speak for itself, using four country-specific examples. The focus of the three journals depends to a large extent on their academic history and geographical origin. ENAJS (South Africa) has by far the highest proportion of writers and case studies from South Africa; ACR (Tanzania/Kenya) has the highest proportion of contributions from East Africa, particularly Tanzania and Kenya; and JAMS (London) has the highest proportion of contributors from the UK. Overall, South Africa is the major hub for media and communication research in Africa with 26% of all case studies published in the period 2010–14, followed by Nigeria (15%) and Kenya (12%). In longitudinal perspective, the case of Ecquid Novi – African Journalism Studies illustrates how a journal which was previously confined to one region (South Africa) has expanded greatly and today has a mixture of contributors from both south and north. It presents the results of a content analysis comparing international news content from the 1990s and the 2010s. The results find that the news coverage of Africa has become significantly more positive in tone. In addition, there has been a decrease in stories that focus exclusively on humanitarian disaster, and an increase in stories about business and sport. The criticism has resulted in the submission of alternative African journalism models such as ujamaa journalism, ubuntu journalism and oral discourse journalism. The present article reviews a number of significant contributions to normative African journalism models over the past 50 years and argues that they constitute three major streams: journalism for social change, communal journalism and journalism based on oral discourse. The vital differences between these three journalism models are explicated along the dimensions of interventionism and cultural essentialism. The article goes on to enquire why the three journalism models of Africa, different as they are, appear to be in collective conflict with Western journalism paradigms. Therefore, to better understand these portrayals, this study evaluated five online newspapers in the United Kingdom (UK) that covered the World Cup event in South Africa. Results show that UK media framing of Africa tends to be heavily skewed at portraying Africa in a negative light. The media therefore, should ensure that framing of African reportage is divorced from the tendency of viewing Africa with negative lens. This will consequently culminate into reporting about Africa in a fair and balanced manner.
