To some; Africa’s sluggish development is masterminded by foreign developed nations while to others, answers to the continent’s development trends lie in its own decisions. Within this broad continuum is a trajectory in media discourse that labels advanced nations, particularly the Western press, as mouthpieces of portraying Africa negatively. This seems to kick-start Serwornoo to explore the Afro-pessimism discourse from the lens of Africa’s own media to the rest of the world. By this, the book specifically aims at exploring how the Ghanaian media has portrayed the continent of Africa in their foreign news pages in an attempt to put forward new trends in the patterns of Afro-pessimism. The book fills a significant gap in news gathering and selection in relation to dominant themes which tends to be a product of ideological issues, organisational conditions and behaviour of journalists in the running of media establishments. The book is presented in simple language, well organised and researched with strong theoretical basis to benefit academia and industry. This reviewer argues that colonial bonding is becoming a weaker argument in the process of news gathering and selection.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Jacob Bisher wenig Beachtung gefunden hat die Frage, wie dieses verbesserte Bild in der restlichen Welt und insbesondere in Afrika reflektiert wird. Der BBC World Service allein fungiert in 62 % der untersuchten Artikel als Quelle, ghanaische Journalisten oder Medienorganisationen nur in 2 %.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Africa’s image in the Ghanaian press : the influence of international news agencies&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:76903367,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/65200924/Africa_s_image_in_the_Ghanaian_press_the_influence_of_international_news_agencies&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/65200924/Africa_s_image_in_the_Ghanaian_press_the_influence_of_international_news_agencies"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="28821259" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/28821259/The_historical_and_contemporary_representation_of_Africa_in_global_media_flows_Can_the_continent_speak_back_for_itself_on_its_own_terms">The historical and contemporary representation of Africa in global media flows: Can the continent speak back for itself on its own terms</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="275022" href="https://valdosta.academia.edu/ProsperYaoTsikata">Prosper Yao Tsikata</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">For decades (perhaps, centuries) global media outlets have framed and represented Africa in a negative light. These media representations have tended to overlook the diverse political, economic, social and cultural experiences of individual African countries – a situation that has led to the uncritical lumping together of African nations under the appellation of ‘Africa’. When this happens, the specific and unique conditions of her 55 nations are squeezed into a one-size-fits-all media frame. Historical and ideological forces, both from within and outside the continent, have conspired to impose this fate on Africa. The philosophies of negritude and the Organisation of African Unity were among the complicit internal forces helping to sustain such views. To evaluate this phenomenon, this essay examines the underpinnings of the framing and representation of ‘Africa’ in global media through a review of the literature, and seeks to answer the question of whether the continent can speak for itself, using four country-specific examples. Current media practices within the African continent, enabled by local media policies and infrastructure, have tended to rhetorically position countries primarily in accordance with their national identities, while attributing the African appellation as a secondary frame of representation.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The historical and contemporary representation of Africa in global media flows: Can the continent speak back for itself on its own terms&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:49241242,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/28821259/The_historical_and_contemporary_representation_of_Africa_in_global_media_flows_Can_the_continent_speak_back_for_itself_on_its_own_terms&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/28821259/The_historical_and_contemporary_representation_of_Africa_in_global_media_flows_Can_the_continent_speak_back_for_itself_on_its_own_terms"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="66717724" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/66717724/The_Influence_of_Global_News_Organisations">The Influence of Global News Organisations</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="176041347" href="https://independent.academia.edu/MSerwornoo">Michael Serwornoo</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The Image of Africa in Ghana’s Press is a comprehensive and highly analytical study of the impact of foreign news organisations on the creation of an image of Africa in its own press. Rather, beyond these tripartite functions, the power of the media is primarily derived from how their narratives are structured and interpreted in order to (re) construct reality. This paper underscores the fact that beyond the text of media reportage, the Western media in the coverage of international news on and about Africa also consciously or inadvertently define the reality of the content. Therefore, it argues that there are other sides to Africa that have been completely ignored by the west which highlights the sincere effort of the continent at genuine socio-political changes in spite of its current challenges. And to beam the searchlight on the deliberately ignored aspects of the continents efforts at nation building would require that our &quot; charity, &quot; indeed &quot; must begin at home. &quot;</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;IF WESTERN MEDIA GOT AFRICA WRONG, HOW RIGHT IS AFRICAN MEDIA REPORTING AFRICA? The chapter argues that the bleak picture of the continent that the African media peddles through its overwhelming emphasis on negative news and subjective reportage of the activities of African governments to its national and international publics serve largely to water the seeds of internal discord and Afro-pessimism. It can therefore be argued that the African mass media has continued to contribute to the pessimistic imaging of Africa through its one-sided reportage of the continent. This has far-reaching consequences for not only democratic sustenance but also Africa’s human and economic development. The chapter suggests that in view of the power that communication wields over matters of political and economic development and the media’s role in this equation, the African mass media needs to awaken to the obligation of partnering with government to set and nurture societal goals and aspirations, articulating a shared vision of progress for both the state and the continent</p><div democracy. The issues of democracy and the theories that drive them are mostly either Euro-centric or Anglo-American. The perspective offered by this thesis showed that Africa has a unique system which calls for a hybridised approach to the study of media and democracy. The functioning of a state-owned media, insulated from governmental control by the 1992 Ghana Constitution alongside privately-owned media is a phenomenon worth the undertaking. What the study has done was an engagement with normative theories of media and democracy to determine whether or not the news media and more particularly, the newspaper media contribute to democratic development of Ghana. In this context, a comparative analytical study of the Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Chronicle, state and private entities respectively, underpinned the enquiry into the possible influences on elections, checks on democratic accountability a...</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The news media and democracy in Ghana (1992-2000)&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:77510563,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/66241918/The_news_media_and_democracy_in_Ghana_1992_2000_&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/66241918/The_news_media_and_democracy_in_Ghana_1992_2000_"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="121755083" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/121755083/K_B_Amihere_2015_I_Spoke_for_Freedom_History_and_Politics_of_the_Ghana_Press_Published_by_DigiBooks_Ghana_Limited_Gh100_00">K. However, Scott (2015, 1) points out that a systematic study of the representation of Africa in western media is still missing, and that general conclusions on the present discourses in news content cannot be made. For one, most of the research only includes mainstream media, news genres and formats and thus forms ‘an insufficient basis for reaching any firm, generalisable conclusions’. To address this, we focus on the representation of Africa in ‘MO* Magazine’, a Belgian alternative news magazine that puts emphasis on the Global South, including an extensive coverage of Africa. Applying Critical Discourse Analysis, we examined all articles that focus on Africa during one year in the magazine’s outlets of 2015 and 2016 in addition to in-depth interviews with the editorial staff. This explorative study investigates how MO* Magazine constructs its alternative identity in the context of African news coverage. We argue that a mere empirical focus on features and narratives generally attributed to mainstream media, such as the presence of Afro-pessimistic and -optimistic discourses, is not sufficient to reach conclusions about the alternative identity of a magazine. The alternative or additional value of MO* is mostly reflected in the overall focus on the Global South and its key issues, in the geographic diversity of the coverage, the overall editorial approach of the magazine and the context-richness of the articles.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Beyond Afro-pessimism and -optimism?
