A. Mithat Efendi is one of the most prominent names of synthesist approach that could be explained as adopting the positive sides of the West without refusing national and moral values. However, trying to balance between the East and the West which have a lot in common as well as having completely opposite value judgements caused some contradictions to rise for A. Mithat Efendi, as for the other various writers. These contradictions were mostly seen between the ideas and practices about the woman. In this study conducted by using scanning model in qualitative research method, the novels \u0026amp;quot;Müşahedat\u0026amp;quot;, \u0026amp;quot;FelatunBeyileRakım Efendi\u0026amp;quot;, \u0026amp;quot;YeryüzündeBirMelek\u0026amp;quot;, “DiplomalıKız” and “Jöntürk” have been examined and the findings have been collected with document analysis method. In the light of the information obtained with the content analysis method, contradictions about the woman issue in Mithat Efendi’s novels have been revealed. The constraint of this study is the incapability of examining all novels of Mithat Efendi Efendi. This study tries to find out how the life in that period was reflected to the works of art in terms of contradictions about woman issue in Mithat Efendi Efendi’s novels. Özet Tanzimat Döneminde Türk aydınları eski ile yeni, Doğu ile Batı arasında bir ikilem yaşamış, siyasi görüşleri doğrultusunda toptan ret, toptan kabul ya da sentez yollarından birini seçmişlerdir. Ahmet Mithat, millî ve manevî değerleri reddetmeden Batı\u0026amp;#39;nın güzel yanlarını almak şeklinde izah edilebilecek sentezci yaklaşımın önde gelen isimlerinden biridir. Ancak birçok ortak noktası olmakla birlikte birbirine taban tabana zıt değer yargıları da olan Doğu ile Batı arasında bir denge kurmaya çalışmak, diğer birçok yazarda olduğu gibi A. Mithat Efendi\u0026amp;#39;de de bazı çelişkiler ortaya çıkmasına yol açmıştır. Bu çelişkiler en çok da kadın konusundaki fikirler ile uygulamalar arasında görülmüştür. İçerik analiz yöntemi ile elde edilen veriler ışığında A. Mithat Efendi\u0026amp;#39;nin romanlarında kadın konusuyla ilgili çelişkiler ortaya koyulmuştur. Bu çalışmanın bir başka hedefi de A. Mithat Efendi\u0026amp;#39;nin romanlarında kadın konusunda görülen çelişkiler zaviyesinden o dönemin yaşantısının eserlere nasıl yansıdığını anlamaya çalışmaktır. Bu çalışmanın sınırlılığı, A. Mithat Efendi\u0026amp;#39;nin bütün romanlarının ele alınamamış olmasıdır. A. Mithat Efendi is one of the most prominent names of synthesist approach that could be explained as adopting the positive sides of the West without refusing national and moral values. However, trying to balance between the East and the West which have a lot in common as well as having completely opposite value judgements caused some contradictions to rise for A. Mithat Efendi, as for the other various writers. These contradictions were mostly seen between the ideas and practices about the woman. In this study conducted by using scanning model in qualitative research method, the novels \"Müşahedat\", \"FelatunBeyileRakım Efendi\", \"YeryüzündeBirMelek\", “DiplomalıKız” and “Jöntürk” have been examined and the findings have been collected with document analysis method. In the light of the information obtained with the content analysis method, contradictions about the woman issue in Mithat Efendi’s novels have been revealed. The constraint of this study is the incapability of examining all novels of Mithat Efendi Efendi. Asırda yaşamış, Osmanlı coğrafyasının çok farklı bölgelerinde değişik görevler icra etmiş, kendisini dinî ilimler ve hukuk alanında iyi yetiştirmiş bir mütefekkirdir. Yetmiş beş yıllık hayatına yetmiş beş eser sığdırmış, çeşitli konularda fikir beyan etmiş Mehmed Fevzî Efendi’nin günümüzde de güncelliğini koruyan insan tasnifi alışılmışın dışındadır. Biz bu makalemizde onun İstanbul Üniversitesi Türkçe Yazmalar Bölümü 4187 numarada kayıtlı “Hadâik-i Hamidiyye Nâm Ahlak Risalesi” adlı yazma eserinden istifadeyle insan tarifi ve tasnifini ele almaya çalışacağız. Müellif bu eserinde ana hatlarıyla filozofların canlıların özelliklerinden olan “Üreyen, duyu sahibi, iradesiyle hareket edebilen bir varlık” tanımını esas almış ve kadim kültürlerin düşünürleri “Hayavân-ı nâtık” (Düşünen/Konuşan hayvan) şeklindeki yaklaşımını kabul etmiştir. Ancak bunları tüm canlıların ortak özelliği görüp esas insanı insan yapan unsurun onun maneviyatında gizli olduğunu ifade etmiştir. İnsanın keremini İslam dini çerçevesinde ele alan yazar, ilim ve irfandan mahrum olan bir insanın surette bir insan ama gerçekte insan olamayacağına inanmaktadır. İnsana bakışında daha çok tasavvufi ögeler kullanan Mehmed Fevzî Efendi onu dört kategoriye ayırmakta bunları, “İnsan-ı kâmil, İnsan-ı mükemmil, İnsan-ı nâkıs, İnsan-ı munakkıs” şeklinde betimlemektedir. Bu tasnifin ana fikrinde insan, bir başkasına faydası dokunmakla iyi, kötü olması ise başkalarına zarar vermesiyle nitelendirilmesidir. Bununla birlikte Mehmed Fevzî Efendi’ye göre, insan ne kadar kötü olursa olsun ona iyilikle davranmak, merhamet etmek, yumuşak söz söylemek, hatta Müslüman olmasa bile hediye ve ikramda bulunmak, Allah’ın ahlakıyla ahlaklanmak demektir. İnsanı “Gaye varlık” olarak gören müellif, onun bu dünyada bozulmaması ve ahirette kurtuluşa ermesinin yolunu gösterme bağlamında bazı etik kurallardan söz etmektedir. Mehmed Fevzî Efendi’nin âlimlik kimliği yanında aynı zamanda tasavvuf âdabına sahip olduğu dikkate alındığında, insana yaklaşımında hoşgörü sahibi Anadolu tasavvuf geleneğine mensup zevatın Edebiyat ile eğitim ilişkisi, edebî eserlerde de dikkat çekmektedir. Birçok edebî eser; dönemin eğitim özellikleri, eğitim kurumları, evde eğitim, ailenin çocuğu eğitmesi gibi örnekler sunmaktadır. Özellikle Tanzimat devrinde Batı medeniyeti ile Osmanlı değerlerinin çok teferruatlı karşılaştırmalarını yapan yazar Ahmet Mithat Efendi olmuştur (Okay, 2005: 21). Ahmet Mithat Efendi ayrıca, eserleri vasıtası ile toplumu eğitme çabası içerisindedir. Bu çalışmada Ahmet Mithat Efendi’nin zıtlıklardan yola çıkarak, kötüyü göstererek toplumu iyiye yönlendirmeye çalıştığı Çengi romanı üzerinde durulmuştur. Roman, doküman tarama ile farklı bölümlerde ele alınan aile içi eğitim ve bu eğitimde verilen değerler bakımından incelenmiştir. Yapılan incelemeler sonucunda Ahmet Mithat Efendi’nin Çengi romanında dört farklı aile örneği olduğu ancak bu ailelerin hiçbirinin mükemmel olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Annelik görevini yerine tam olarak getiremeyen Saliha Molla ve Sünbül Hanım, çocukları Dâniş Çelebi ile Cemal Bey’in eğitiminde birçok hatalar yapmışlardır. Baba olarak kızının üzerine çok fazla düşen Canbert Bey de kızı Melek Hanım’ı dünyadan soyutlayarak yanlış bir eğitim yolu izlemiştir. Celâl Âl-i Ahmed'in de hikâyelerinde değindiği en önemli konulardan biri toplum, kültür ve gelenek içinde kadının yeri, eğitimi ve aile yaşantısıdır. Celal Âl-i Ahmed, hikâyesine konu ettiği kadınlar üzerinden, toplumsal eleştiri yapar. Bu vurguyu güçlendirmek için karakterlerini toplumun uç kesimlerinden seçer. Kadınların hakir görülmesini, eğitimsiz ve cahil bırakılmasını eleştirir. Bu çalışmada Celâl Âl-i Ahmed'in, başkarakteri kadın olan hikâyeleri üzerine tahliller yapılmış, bu kadınların aile ve toplum içindeki yerleri incelenmiştir. Tahlil edilen hikâyelerden de anlaşılacağı üzere Âl-i Ahmed, hikâyelerinde kadın başkarakterlere sıkça yer vermiş ve bu kadınları genellikle toplumun alt tabakalarından seçmiştir. İster modern ister geleneksel olsun, Âl-i Ahmed'in kadın karakterlerinde bulunan ortak özellik, cehalettir ve kadın karakterlerin çoğu, Âl-i Ahmed'in hikâyelerindeki erkek karakterlerde de görülebileceği gibi ağzı bozuk ve geçimsiz karakterlerdir. Elbette karakterlerin oluşumunda Âl-i Ahmed'in yaşadığı dönemin şartları ve konu edindiği kesimin özellikleri yadsınamaz. Ottoman Empire. In addition to his authorship, he was also a journalist and a publisher and he did translations as well. In these various fields he sometimes led the way. In Ittihad-journal which was published by Ahmet Midhat-he translated the Social Contract of Jean Jacques Rousseau as Mukavele-i Ictimaiyye in 1876 and this was the first translation of Social Contract in Turkish. However, due to the political interventions, this translation was interrupted and he was exiled to the Rhodes Islan after a while, this translation remained incomplete. Ahmet Midhat Efendi, by following the translation trend of his era, made comments on the texts while translating it wherever he thinks it is compulsory under the titles of "izah or ijmal" and by doing so he tried to make the translation appropriate for the Turkish reader. Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarına denk gelen vaka zamanında yenilik hareketlerinin sokağa yansıması ve eski-yeni çatışması öne çıkar. Toplumun Tanzimat fermanından bu yana yaşadığı/şahit olduğu çağdaşlaşma hareketlerine, maneviyatı zedelemesi sebebiyle mesafeli duranlar ile yenilikleri yaşamsal bir zaruret sayan kahramanlar arasındaki çatışma romanın odağındadır. Bir komiser olan ve mahallede doğmuş başkişi merkezinde gelişen vaka otuz yıllık bir zaman dilimini kapsar. Dramatik aksiyonun ilerleyişi ve başkişinin serüveni merkezinde polisiye roman özelliklerini taşıyan eser, başkişinin bir cinayet soruşturması sebebiyle eski sokağına dönmesi sonrasında gelişen olaylarla sürer. Toplumsal değerleri ve yozlaşmayı mekân ve insan üzerinden güçlü metaforlarla aktaran romanda mekân-insan etkileşimin diyalektik boyutu göze çarpar. Romanda öne çıkan kahramanların hemen hepsi bir mekânın kuşatıcılığında karakter geliştirir ve kimlik mekânlarıyla var olurlar. İsimleri verilmeyen kahramanlar adeta içerisinde/üzerinde bulundukları mekânın bir parçası, ontolojik anlamda aynasıdırlar. Bu da romanın simgesel düzlemini zenginleştiren bir unsur olarak göze çarpar. Eserin dramatik aksiyonunu var eden çatışmaları besleyen bu unsurlar, Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarında devrimleri ve yenilik hareketlerinin toplumsal yaşamdaki izdüşümünü bir sokak üzerinden aktarır.
