It is about creating dialogue, cultivating consideration, and fostering adaptation to the different and changing needs of individuals that we serve. However, the word 'trauma' and the term 'trauma informed care' both risk becoming over-used and drained of meaning. This is partly, we suggest, because the term 'trauma' has become over-medicalised as a clinical term in mental health services and the nature of structural violence in society is thereby glossed over. Hollis</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Though the framers of the constitution penned a social contract providing liberty and justice for all, 240 years later, people originally excluded from this treatise struggle for inclusivity through amendments and legislation. Many women of color, religious minorities, and gender/sexual minorities experience how those in power frequently suppress and coerce marginalized populations. Those in an intersection of these demographic positions may feel increased oppression. Despite several constitutional amendments and federal legislation, I argue that a more contemporary abuse is workplace bullying that occurs when the dominant person exploits his or her position to denigrate people in marginalized positions. In higher education, vulnerable and marginalized populations typically work in the least powerful positions (Hollis, 2016a). Within Mithaug’s (1996) theoretical frame regarding self- determination, the sample reported their experiences in 2017– 2018. Of a sample in which N = 669, 58% of all respondents reported being affected by workplace bullying. Integrating these three areas provides a psychological, existential, physiological, and embodied understanding of the fundamental harm of racial oppression. My aim is to show that the harm of existing as racially oppressed is not just psychological or physiological. That is, racial oppression is not only harmful with regards to the immediate and lasting effects of the compiled stresses that result from continually being made aware of one’s bodily existence as ‘other’ in a predominantly and normatively white world. In addition, racially oppressed people also often lose a sense of themselves, become alienated from themselves, and come to understand themselves vis-à-vis the oppressor. Racism produces profound harms to racialized people. Strategies to address systemic racism must be implemented to bring about sustainable changes in healthcare and academic settings. This quality improvement initiative provides strategies to address systemic racism and discrimination against Black nurses and nursing students in Ontario, Canada. It is part of a broader initiative showcasing Black nurses in action to end racism and discrimination. We have found that people who have experienced racism need healing, support, and protection including trauma-related services to facilitate their healing. Implementing multi-level, multi-pronged interventions in workplaces will create healthy work environments for all members of society, especially Black nurses who are both clients/patients and providers of healthcare. This literature review examines how diverse racial traumas obstruct Black professionals across cognitive, emotional, financial, and social domains-elevating psychiatric risks, undermining innovation, restricting opportunities, and fostering isolation. The paper expands on four predominant racial traumas: (a) genetic trauma involving intergenerational transmission of distress, (b) decontextualized trauma characterized by fragmented memories, (c) secondary trauma from witnessing racism, and (d) anticipatory 'ghosting' trauma. Multifaceted resilience-promoting interventions, including mental healthcare, safe spaces, education, and mindfulness, show provisional efficacy.
