However, the continuous use of conventional insecticides leads to the development of insecticide resistance, which emphasizes the need for new pest management alternatives. The present study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of insecticides and bio-pesticides against the greenhouse whitefly on tomatoes grown in polyhouses (plastic-covered greenhouses) for two years at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, India. Results showed that abamectin resulted in the highest mean percent reduction in immatures of T. vaporariorum, followed by acetamiprid and buprofezin. Spiromesifen and bifenthrin resulted in moderate levels of efficacy, followed by azadirachtin and mineral oil. Spinosad, Melia, and malathion (the insecticide-treated control) showed the least efficacy against immatures of T. vaporariorum. Similarly, abamectin and acetamiprid were the most highly effective materials against the adult stage. Bifenthrin, spinosad, azadirachtin, and buprofezin showed moderate reductions in adult whitefly populations. Spiromesifen, mineral oil, Melia, and malathion were the least effective against adult populations of T. vaporariorum. Overall, abamectin, acetamiprid, buprofezin, and bifenthrin were the most promising materials for managing T. vaporariorum in greenhouses. The treatments viz., imidachloprid (15.70 to 22.97%), triazophos (10.43 to 21.97%), thiamethoxam (20.77 to 37.97%), cyantraniliprole (20.03 to 34.37%), azadirhactin (10.40 to 18.27%), fipronil (6.60 to 29.10%) and buprofezin (7.93 to 17.00%) showed high level of residual toxicity up to sixth day after the treatment. Although toxicity of spinosad (15.23%) was noticed to be high at two days after treatment, its toxicity started decreasing from fourth day itself. The following toxicity treatments were applied: T1: control, T2: chlorpyrifos (Pitcher) 450 EC (1.25 L.ha-1), T3: chlorpyrifos 450 EC (Pitcher) (0.62 L.ha-1), T4: thiamethoxam 100 WG (1.00 L.ha-1), T5: thiamethoxam 250 WG (0.50 L.ha-1), T6: teflubenzuron 150 CS (0.025 L.ha-1) and T7: teflubenzuron 150 CS (0.0125 L.ha-1). For the sub-lethal effect, a tenth of the recommended concentration was used. The insecticide teflubenzuron was effective against whitefly nymphs, while chlorpyrifos and thiamethoxam were efficient against adult whiteflies. Insecticides at the dose and lower dose were not efficient to control the adults and nymphs of mite T. evansi. Teflubenzuron was selective at the two doses tested against C. sanguinea and C. flavipes, while thiamethoxam was selective (lower dose) against these two predators. Chlorpyrifos was selective against C. flavipes (lower dose). All insecticides were selective or moderately selective at 21 days after application. Insecticides were not efficient to control the adults and nymphs of T. evansi. The growth regulating insecticide teflubenzuron was effective against whitefly nymphs. Chlorpyrifos and thiamethoxam were efficient against adult whiteflies. During evaluation of the FMT in a strawberry greenhouse, it was also found to attract higher number of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), compared to the conventional yellow sticky trap. The color cue exhibited by the petals and/or geometrical pattern of the flower models might have tempted the whitefly to land on them. Therefore, we assessed the potential of the FMT as a novel pest management tactic for T. vaporariorum. In laboratory comparison test in an acryl cage, the FMT captured adult whiteflies 1.8 times more than did the yellow sticky trap. Installation of 80 FMTs in a 500 m 2 commercial tomato greenhouse significantly reduced the adult population of T. vaporariorum. Sooty mold infestation was also reduced by 85% on the greenhouse fruits. Similarly less sooty mold infestation was found on the harvested tomato fruits from the trap-equipped greenhouse.
