name="2"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-1.htm#aramaic"><b>1</b></a></span>And Yaquuv heard the words of the children of Laban who said, “Yaquuv took everything that our father had and whatever our father possessed, all of this property.” <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-2.htm#aramaic"><b>2</b></a></span>And Yaquuv saw the face of Laban which was not with him as it had been yesterday and as the day before. <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-3.htm#aramaic"><b>3</b></a></span>And LORD JEHOVAH said to Yaquuv: “Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I shall be with you.” <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-4.htm#aramaic"><b>4</b></a></span>And Yaquuv sent and he called Rakhyl and Leah to the field with his flock, <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-5.htm#aramaic"><b>5</b></a></span>And he said to them, “I saw the face of your father, that it is not with me like yesterday and like the day before, and the God of my father has been with me. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-6.htm#aramaic"><b>6</b></a></span>And you know that with all my power I have served your father. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-7.htm#aramaic"><b>7</b></a></span>And your father has deceived me and has changed my wages ten times, and God did not allow him to do evil to me. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-8.htm#aramaic"><b>8</b></a></span>If in this way he would say, ‘the white spotted shall be your reward’, all the flocks would bear young white spotted, and if he would say ‘the spotted shall be your reward’, all the flocks would bear young spotted. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-9.htm#aramaic"><b>9</b></a></span>And God separated from the possessions of your father and he gave them to me. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-10.htm#aramaic"><b>10</b></a></span>And at the season of breeding flocks I lifted my eyes and I saw in a dream, and behold, goats mounting upon the flock, white spotted and spotted and speckled. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-11.htm#aramaic"><b>11</b></a></span>And the Angel of God said to me in a dream, ‘Yaquuv’, and I said, ‘Here I am.’ <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-12.htm#aramaic"><b>12</b></a></span>And he said to me, ‘Lift up your eyes and see all the goats mounting on the flock with white spotted foreheads, and spotted and speckled, because I have seen everything that Laban has done to you. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-13.htm#aramaic"><b>13</b></a></span>I AM the God of BaythEil, which you anointed for me there as a monument, and you vowed to me there a vow. Now arise, go out from this land and return to the land of your generations.” <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-14.htm#aramaic"><b>14</b></a></span>And Rakhyl and Leah answered and they were saying, “Again we have no part or inheritance in the house of our father. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-15.htm#aramaic"><b>15</b></a></span>Behold we are considered as strangers to him, because we are sold and he consumes our money. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-16.htm#aramaic"><b>16</b></a></span>Because God has separated all wealth from our father; it is ours and our children's, and now all that LORD JEHOVAH has said to you, do.”<p> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-17.htm#aramaic"><b>17</b></a></span>And Yaquuv stood and lifted his children and his wives onto camels; <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-18.htm#aramaic"><b>18</b></a></span>And he took all his livestock and all his possessions that he acquired in Padan d'Aram to come to Isaaq his father, to the land of Canaan. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-19.htm#aramaic"><b>19</b></a></span>And Laban went to shear his flock and Rakhyl stole the images of her father. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-20.htm#aramaic"><b>20</b></a></span>And Yaquuv deceived the heart of Laban the Aramaean because he did not tell him that he was leaving. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-21.htm#aramaic"><b>21</b></a></span>And he fled, he and all whom he had, and he arose and he passed through the river and set his face toward Mount Gilead.<p> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-22.htm#aramaic"><b>22</b></a></span>And it was told to Laban on the third day that Yaquuv fled from him. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-23.htm#aramaic"><b>23</b></a></span>And he took his brothers with him and pursued after him a seven days’ journey and he overtook him in the Mount of Gilead. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-24.htm#aramaic"><b>24</b></a></span>And God came upon Laban the Aramaean in a dream of the night and he said to him, “Beware that you do not speak with Yaquuv of good or for evil.”<p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-25.htm#aramaic"><b>25</b></a></span>And Laban overtook Yaquuv, and Yaquuv pitched his tent in the mountain, and Laban led his brothers in the mountain of Gilead. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-26.htm#aramaic"><b>26</b></a></span>And Laban said to Yaquuv, “What have I done to you that you have deceived my heart, and you have taken my daughters like captives by the sword? <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-27.htm#aramaic"><b>27</b></a></span>Why did you hide to flee and steal away from me, and you did not tell me? I would have sent you in joy and with music and with harps and with tambourines. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-28.htm#aramaic"><b>28</b></a></span>And you have not let me kiss my sons and my daughters; now you have done wrong in the thing that you have done. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-29.htm#aramaic"><b>29</b></a></span>It had come into my hands to do harm to you, and the God of your father said to me in the evening, ‘Beware, lest you speak with Yaquuv of good or for evil.’ <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-30.htm#aramaic"><b>30</b></a></span>And now you are going because you truly long for the house of your father. Why have you stolen my gods?” <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-31.htm#aramaic"><b>31</b></a></span>And Yaquuv answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, and I said, lest you will take your daughters from me. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-32.htm#aramaic"><b>32</b></a></span>The one with whom your gods are found shall not live. Make known what I have that is yours before our brethren and take it for yourself”; and Yaquuv did not know that Rakhyl had stolen them.<p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-33.htm#aramaic"><b>33</b></a></span>And Laban entered the tent of Yaquuv and the tent of Leah and the second tent of the Maidservants and he did not find them, and he went out from the tent of Leah and entered the tent of Rakhyl. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-34.htm#aramaic"><b>34</b></a></span>And Rakhyl had taken the images and she set them in the saddle canopy of the camel and she sat upon them, and Laban searched the whole tent and he did not find them. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-35.htm#aramaic"><b>35</b></a></span>And Rakhyl said to her father, “Let it not be displeasing in the eyes of my Lord that I cannot rise from before you, because the custom of women is upon me”, and he searched and he did not find the images.<p> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-36.htm#aramaic"><b>36</b></a></span>And it displeased Yaquuv, and he argued with Laban and Yaquuv answered and said to Laban, “What is my crime, and what is my fault that you have chased after me? <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-37.htm#aramaic"><b>37</b></a></span>See, you have searched all my vessels. What have you found from all the vessels of your house? Put it here before my brothers and your brothers, and they will convict between both. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-38.htm#aramaic"><b>38</b></a></span>Behold I have been with you twenty years; your ewes and your shegoats are not barren and the rams of your flocks I have not consumed. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-39.htm#aramaic"><b>39</b></a></span>And that which was torn I have not brought to you; I was keeping it that you would seek it from my hands; I was with that which was stolen by day and what was stolen in the night. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-40.htm#aramaic"><b>40</b></a></span>So I was; by day the heat consumed me and the cold in the night drove sleep from my eyes. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-41.htm#aramaic"><b>41</b></a></span>Behold I had twenty years in your house. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks and you changed my pay ten times. <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-42.htm#aramaic"><b>42</b></a></span>And if the God of My father, the God of Abraham and the awe of Isaac had not stood up for me, now you would have sent me with nothing; and God saw my toil and the labor of my hands and rebuked you in the evening.<p> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/31-43.htm#aramaic"><b>43</b></a></span>And Laban answered and said to Yaquuv, “The daughters of my daughters, and the sons of my sons, and the flocks of my flocks, and everything that you see is mine.
