In the introduction to this special issue, we vital challenges faced today, and present a new set of studies that respond to these concerns. We conceptualize power as a social relation built on the asymmetrical distribution of resources and risks and locate power in the interactions among, and the processes that constitute, people, places, and resources. Politics, then, are found in the practices and mechanisms through which such power is circulated. The focus here is on politics related to the environment, understood as biophysical phenomena, together with human knowledge and practice. To apply these concepts, we promote multiscale research models that articulate selected ecological phenomena and local social processes, together with regional and global forces and ideas. We also advocate methods for research and practice that are sensitive to relations of difference and power among and within social groups. In this introductory article, we offer a useful vision of how scholar-activists can engage with and support more just and sustainable ways of organizing human-human and human-environment relations. Specifically, we argue that engaged researchers can significantly contribute to a meaningful "ecological revolution" by (1) examining the tremendously diverse, already-existing experiments with other ways of being in the world, (2) helping to develop alternative visions, analyses, narratives, and desires that can move people to desire and adopt those ways of being, and (3) actively supporting and constructing economies and ecologies with alternative ethical orientations. Each article in this collection attempts one or more of these goals, and this introductory article provides a conceptual grounding for these ethnographic studies and a synthesis of some of their primary contributions. We begin by describing why critique is analytically and politically inadequate and explain why we think a non-capitalocentric ontology offers an essential complement for engaged scholarship. We then turn to the work of J.K. Gibson-Graham and the Community Economies Collective in order to explain how ideas of overdetermination, diverse economies, and performativity better equip the field of political ecology to contribute to alternative futures. The study of power relations, crossing the socio-environmental field, has emerged in Latin America as a central interdisciplinary field for thinking about society/environment relations. Latin American critical thinking, which had as a reference a productivist vision of development and modernity, has opened up to the vast plurality of popular movements in search for autonomy and enhancement of rights, and to the unique and constitutive relationship that communities have with their local natures and territories. At the center of the global environmental discourse there are deeply moral and political arguments about the levels of consumption in the north and south. The issues of growth and emission are inextricable from those relating to over-consumption and starvation, privilege and oppression. At the local level where anthropologists mostly do their work, we have demonstrated many connections between issues of resource use and the politics of power and wealth. Yet the problem of consumption, of standards of living, the growth of needs, and the motive for economic expansion is only implicit in the local tradition of cultural and political ecology. This paper draws on my fieldwork among Kekchi swidden farmers in Belize, to argue that consumption is actually a fundamental issue in understanding local ecological relationships and processes of change. I discuss some reasons why early cultural ecology, like other functionalisms, could not adequately theorize consumption, and found ways to erase the issue. There are now adequate ways to understand both local and transnational processes that cultivate new tastes, convert luxuries into necessities, and impel competitive and expanding consumption, with direct ecological consequences. Drawing on qualitative research conducted in a semi-remote Canadian Anishinaabe community and among Euro-American residents of Ohio who oppose local shale energy development, I trace parallels between the disempowerment and vulnerability experienced by people with very different assumptions about the world and their place in it and very different positions within the global political economic system. While environmental justice scholars have revealed compelling correlations between social and environmental inequity, I argue that investigating environmental degradation's sociocultural impacts among relatively privileged groups can encourage more dynamic explorations of conjoined environmental/social/political systems and expose ongoing structural shifts. My comparative analysis seems to suggest that ever-increasing segments of the world's population now contend with environmental challenges that they did not authorize, and do not benefit from. I thus conclude by calling for additional investigations of environmental degradation in unexpected places and the implications of extensive inequity for global sustainability. Alors que les chercheurs de justice environnementale ont révélé des corrélations convaincantes entre les inégalités sociales et de l'environnement, je soutiens que l'enquête des impacts socioculturels de la dégradation de l'environnement entre les groupes relativement privilégiés peut encourager les explorations plus dynamiques des systèmes conjoints environnementaux/sociaux/politiques, et d'exposer les changements structurels en cours. Mon analyse comparative suggère qu'un nombre croissant de gens soutiennent maintenant avec les défis environnementaux qu'ils n'autorisaient pas, et qu'ils ne bénéficient pas. Je conclus en demandant des investigations complémentaires de la dégradation de l'environnement dans des endroits inattendus, et les implications de ce grande injustice pour la durabilité mondiale. Reconociendo la degradación medioambiental como un fenómeno profundamente político, este artículo examina como los cambios medioambientales no deseados transforman el entendimiento de las personas sobre el mundo natural y su relación con este. Basándose en una investigación cualitativa realizada en la semi remota comunidad Anishinaabe Canadiense y entre residentes americanos de Ohio, los cuales se oponen al desarrollo local energético de gas de esquisto; trazo paralelismos entre la pérdida de poder y la vulnerabilidad que sufren las personas que tienen muy diferentes nociones sobre el mundo y su lugar en él, y con muy distintas posiciones dentro del sistema político económico global. Si bien los expertos en justicia ambiental han revelado correlaciones convincentes entre inequidad social y ambiental, yo argumento que investigando el impacto sociocultural de la degradación del medio ambiente entre grupos relativamente privilegiados es posible incentivar exploraciones más dinámicas sobre sistemas conjuntos de tipo medioambiental / sociales / políticos, y revelar los cambios estructurales en curso. Mi análisis comparativo parece sugerir que cada vez más, distintos segmentos de la población mundial lidian con desafíos ambientales los cuales no han sido autorizados por ellos, y de los cuales no se benefician.
