This issue was analyzed on the basis of the archaeological materials of the Kultepe I settlement located in the Nakhchivan region of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The graves and grave equipment discovered in the middle of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century from the place of residence were summarized and included in the research and periodized. Grave equipment stored in the Archaeological Fund of the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan was selected as the main research object of the study. They were discovered during the archaeological excavations in Kultepe I in 1951-1964 and handed over to the museum. According to the mutual analysis of the archaeological excavation report and the records in the museum\u0026amp;#39;s inventory book, first of all, the grave equipment was grouped according to the graves they belonged to, then it was determined that 9 of these graves belong to layer 1a, and the rest belong to layer 1b. These layers were attributed to the Chalcolithic period. However, in the second decade of the 21st century, the coal analyzes taken during the archaeological excavations carried out again by the Azerbaijani-French archaeological expedition, which included the author, showed that the settlement here began in the third quarter of the 7th century BC. This date makes it possible to attribute the burials discovered from layer 1a of Kultepe I, as well as the grave goods, to the early phase of the Ceramic Neolithic. Graves belonging to this phase are notable for their densely packed burials, the abundance of straw-covered intact vessels, and the fact that they are all found in only one excavation site (V site). Probably, during the early phase of the ceramic Neolithic (I phase), burials were carried out in a separate place. Graves discovered from layer 1b, unlike I phase, were also found in other excavation sites, with little or no equipment. The dead were buried wrapped under the floor of the houses. In terms of the structure of the graves, their different directions, and the fact that the skeletons inside are buried on the right or left side, they are analogous to the Neolithic graves of Chalagantepe, Masis-blur, Haji Firuz, Chatal Hoyuk, Hajilar. This fact shows that in the last phase of the Neolithic period, there was a burial custom with common features for Nakhchivan, Anatolia and Urmia basin.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Zeynəb draws attention to the features of the burial that existed in the Neolithic era in the South Caucasus. According to the mutual analysis of the archaeological excavation report and the records in the museum's inventory book, first of all, the grave equipment was grouped according to the graves they belonged to, then it was determined that 9 of these graves belong to layer 1a, and the rest belong to layer 1b. This fact shows that in the last phase of the Neolithic period, there was a burial custom with common features for Nakhchivan, Anatolia and Urmia basin.","publication_date":"2023,,"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":null,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"Neolithic Graves and Burial Customs in Nakhchivan","broadcastable":true,"draft":null,"has_indexable_attachment":true,"indexable":true}}["work"]; However, in the last few years, research in funerary archaeology intensified in the region, using recently developed approaches such as archaeothanatology. Thanks to the excavation of burials according to this method as well as to the reassessment of the published data, it is possible to achieve a state of knowledge on funerary behavior of these populations. Across the whole region, 23 sites with burials have been recorded: Neolithic (2), Chalcolithic (15), Neolithic and Chalcolithic (2) and uncertain chronological attribution (Neolithic and/or Chalcolithic) (4). All data collected revealed a diversification of the practices from the Neolithic to the Chalcolithic. Neolithic funerary practices are less homogeneous than previously thought and burial sites appear to have been closely related to living places. During the Chalcolithic, a diversification of the ways of burying the dead occurs with the appearance of new types of tombs (burials in ceramic vessels and kurgans) and an evolution of the relations between the place of life and the place of the dead can be seen.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Diversification of the funerary practices in the Southern Caucasus from the Neolithic to the Chalcolithic. The monument is situated in 7–8 km to the northeast from the village Chineta, on slopes of the Tigireksky ridge, in an estuarial zone of the River Cheremshanka, the right inflow of the River Inya. The road Maraliha-Kujbyshevo-Chineta- Generalka constructed in the area went through 19 archaeological sites that were investigated. The sites include nine mounds and ten ritual structures. Results: The barrows discovered were under a dense cover of humus. Their stone structures presented rounded mounds built of earth and well-rounded gravel or limestone and had a shell form. The embankments in the base rested on сrepidа stones. The barrows described had the diameter ranging from 10 to 15 m and height of 0.20 to 0,5 m while the diameter of the ritual structures ranged from 1 to 5 m having the height of 0,10–0,2 m. Each grave had only one person buried with various orientation. The complex of findings is presented by ceramic vessels, bone tips of arrows, cowry sinks, metal knives, an ear ring and a bone suspension bracket. This monument is of great scientific interest due to its cultural multi-component nature as the findings identified during our fieldwork present a combination of two types of burial rites, namely Pazyryk and Bolsherechensky ceramic complexes. The Pazyryk features include gravestones with stone and earthen elements, the crouched position of the person buried with their heads to the south-west and south-east, and the presence of funeral meals. The chain of mounds heading in the southwest-northeast direction is stretched out in the background of these peculiar funerary monuments of the steppe zone. A typical Pazyryk pattern on the vessels is also more common for the steppe zone of the Altai Region. A similar situation is observed on the closest objects of Pazyryk culture (Chineta-2, the Hankarinsky dale). It allows us to refer the monument of Cheremshanka-1 to the archaeological Chineta district allocated by P. K. Dashkovski. Localization of these monuments on the territory of the northwest spurs of Altai Region, where steppe and forest-steppe zones join, allows us to consider them as reflecting the relationships of the population of these regions, typical for the era of the early Iron Age. We conclude that separate elements of the material culture of nomads could appear in Pazyryk burials as a result of interactions between groups of people migrating to the south-east. The composition of the elements of the complex which belong to different cultural traditions of the funeral ceremony may reveal some contacts between the people of the Altai Mountains, foothills and steppe areas. Some elements of the steppe material culture might have appeared in Pazyryk burial mounds as a result of interactions between the groups of people migrating to the south-east. Conclusion: The funeral complex of Cheremshanka-1 appears to have a multi-component and multicultural nature and can be pre-dated as built in the III – the first half of the II century BC.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;BURIAL MOUND OF EARLY IRON AGE CHEREMSHANKA-1&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:55901348,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/36014712/BURIAL_MOUND_OF_EARLY_IRON_AGE_CHEREMSHANKA_1&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/36014712/BURIAL_MOUND_OF_EARLY_IRON_AGE_CHEREMSHANKA_1"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:108024545,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:108024545,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_108024545" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
