cities of the Ancient Near East, Egypt, and the Greek and Roman worlds from the perspectives of archaeology and architectural history, bringing to life the physical world of ancient city dwellers by concentrating on evidence recovered from archaeological excavations. Urban form is the focus: the physical appearance and overall plans of the cities, their architecture and natural topography, and the cultural and historical contexts in which they fl ourished. Other Cambridge colleagues joined our discussions on a regular basis, notably Tom Langley, writing a PhD on ideas of the city in Greek Patristic writers, Professor Amira Bennison, a historian of the medieval Maghrib, especially its cities, Professor Rosamond McKitterick, a leading figure in the study of Carolingian France and papal Rome, and Professor Martin Millett, a Roman archaeologist with a longstanding interest in urbanism. We benefited from the support and advice of the members of our Advisory Committee, both in Cambridge (in addition to the above named, Cyprian Broodbank, Robin Cormack, Garth Fowden, Alessandro Launaro, Robin Osborne and John Patterson) and beyond-Luuk de Ligt (Leiden), i dem Kafescio lu (Istanbul), Ray Laurence (Sydney), Keith Lilley (Belfast) and from Oxford, Josephine Quinn, Bryan Ward-Perkins and Chris Wickham. We also enjoyed the invaluable support of two administrators, Nigel Thompson of the Classics Faculty and Beth Clark, whose calm efficiency facilitated conferences and seminars, enabled foreign travel and smoothed contact with the bureaucracies at both ends. We invited many scholars, from Cambridge or further afield, to share their knowledge with us at our weekly seminars. We also organised one-day workshops, including one on the Roman and Islamic city in North Africa and one on Cities and Citizenship after antiquity (that led to an l as special issue) 1 , as well a panel for the 2018 Leeds International Medieval congress on &#39;Memory&#39; and two three-day conferences, one in Istanbul and one in Rome. The last three underlie the three volumes in the present series. In each of those conferences, the members of our group contributed, but we knew that to cover the ground we needed to bring in international colleagues. The three volumes that constitute the present series are far from exhausting the output of the project, and each of us has papers and monographs in the pipeline or already out. Each of the three volumes has its own set of questions, but together they build up an overriding collective agenda of exploring how the cities of the Greek and Roman past, and such ideas of the city that were articulated around them, have impacted on the city and the idea of the city in later periods.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;(2022) Cities as Palimpsests. This seminar offers both a general introduction to urban history and a detailed examination of the archaeological and historical evidence for cities in Mesopotamia – from Uruk and Ur to Babylon and Baghdad. We will explore a range of topics, including urbanization, urban economies, urban landscapes, urban space, urban planning, and the urban experience, as well as the social, political, and cultural dimensions of urbanism. Chronologically, we will begin with the Urban Revolution of the fourth millennium BC and end with the founding of the first Islamic cities during the later part of the first millennium AD. This is a writing-intensive course. Alongside our collective exploration of urban history and the archaeology of urbanism in Mesopotamia, you will be tasked with producing an original research paper of 4,800–6,000 words (approximately 16–20 pages, double-spaced). A significant proportion of your time, both in and out of class, will be devoted to this paper, and the course is designed to guide you through the research and writing process.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Ancient Middle Eastern Cities (syllabus, 2017)&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:54238784,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/34345598/Ancient_Middle_Eastern_Cities_syllabus_2017_&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-related-work-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/34345598/Ancient_Middle_Eastern_Cities_syllabus_2017_"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-related-work-sidebar-card js-safe-related-work-related-work hidden" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="79443874" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-related-work-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/79443874/Cities_and_urbanism_in_ancient_Egypt_papers_from_a_workshop_in_November_2006_at_the_Austrian_Academy_of_Sciences">Cities and urbanism in ancient Egypt : papers from a workshop in November 2006 at the Austrian Academy of Sciences</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-related-work-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="12371711" href="https://oeaw.academia.edu/ErnstCzerny">Ernst Czerny</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2010</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Cities and urbanism in ancient Egypt : papers from a workshop in November 2006 at the Austrian Academy of Sciences&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:86156836,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/79443874/Cities_and_urbanism_in_ancient_Egypt_papers_from_a_workshop_in_November_2006_at_the_Austrian_Academy_of_Sciences&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-related-work-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/79443874/Cities_and_urbanism_in_ancient_Egypt_papers_from_a_workshop_in_November_2006_at_the_Austrian_Academy_of_Sciences"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-related-work-sidebar-card js-safe-related-work-related-work hidden" data-collection-position="10" data-entity-id="125304470" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-related-work-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/125304470/The_Impact_of_Archaeological_Practice_on_the_Study_of_Roman_Period_Urbanism_in_the_Near_East">The Impact of Archaeological Practice on the Study of Roman-Period Urbanism in the Near East</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-related-work-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="33006238" href="https://au.academia.edu/RubinaRaja">Rubina Raja</a><span>, </span><a class="js-related-work-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="315075" href="https://uni-m.academia.edu/MichaelBl%C3%B6mer">Michael Blömer</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Journal of Urban Archaeology, 2024</p><p class="ds2-5-body-sm ds-related-work--abstract hide-on-large">as an onto logical category pertaining to later periods, especially the Hellenistic and Roman periods, is surprisingly limited. No two examples are exactly parallel, and definitions of &#39;city&#39; are necessarily embedded within specific regional and temporal contexts. And yet, these varied places share in common a practical distinction from co-eval settlements (whether empirical or qualitative), and often, a theoretical entanglement with long-term social processes, for example urbanization or the emergence of states. Avoiding generalizing definitions that can frustrate comparative archaeological dialogue, this conference approaches the ancient cities of Eurasia-in all their many forms-from a perspective &#39;beyond the walls&#39;, aiming to contextualize the economic, social, and political relationships that sustained them. Participants from Europe, the United States, Central Asia and Iran will present archaeological research that interrogates the systems undergirding ancient Eurasian population centers, covering geography that spans from the Black Sea region to China to Afghanistan, and periods from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages. These investigations detail how a city fit within its landscape-asking how patchy and non-contiguous resources were managed and controlled; how food, water, goods, and raw materials were supplied to concentrated populations; what the mechanisms and politics of (re)distribution were; and how specialized and non-specialized activities were integrated across physical and socio-cultural spaces. The organization of the conference will further highlight several methods and analyses that have swelled in Eurasian archaeological studies over the past several years-including isotopic analyses, computer modeling, and satellite and UAV imagery analyses-placing these in conversation with well-developed &#39;traditional&#39; archaeological techniques involving ceramic, faunal, palaeoethnobotanical, and landscape survey data. The intersection of the case studies showcased in this conference-along various methodological, geographical, and temporal lines-provides a robust foundation for examining the commonalities and idiosyncrasies of &#39;the city&#39; in ancient Eurasia, and the malleable strategies of connecting people and places.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Beyond the Walls: Provisioning Cities in Ancient Eurasia&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:59766992,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/39610494/Beyond_the_Walls_Provisioning_Cities_in_Ancient_Eurasia&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-related-work-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/39610494/Beyond_the_Walls_Provisioning_Cities_in_Ancient_Eurasia"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-related-work-sidebar-card js-safe-related-work-related-work hidden" data-collection-position="15" data-entity-id="84958716" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-related-work-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/84958716/Eurydice_Kefalidou_Ed_2022_Proceedings_of_the_19th_International_Congress_of_Classical_Archaeology_Volume_6">Eurydice Kefalidou (Ed.) 2022.
