Without the proper workplace safety measures in place, a company puts its employees, customers, brand reputation and revenues in danger. Additionally, failure to teach employees how to maintain a safe work environment may lead to on the job accidents, injuries and, worst of all, fatalities. Safety awareness is part of a larger discursive practice shared by scholars and practitioners in the field of accident prevention. Workplace accidents can damage company morale, causing anxiety and sadness, which this would affect, and productivity of the employees at the workplace. The employee has always been the smallest effective unit of an organization. For an organization, it is as important and sensitive, as the strong role it plays in achieving organizational aims and objectives. However, there are several issues that a high number of accidents occur familiarly faced by the employees who work in port operation while working. Therefore, the purpose of this paper to study the effect of worker compliance towards safety participation among Malaysian port employee and the affect of safety training and communication on level of safety awareness among Malaysian port employee. Significant of this study will help the company or organization increasing it safety awareness while at the same time reducing operation cost when accidents happen in workplace. If the number of accident happen can be reduce, at the same it will improve the effectiveness and efficient of operation in port. This paper can show which parties plays a great role in determining level of safety awareness compared with workers safety compliance and effectiveness of training and communication. METKU Project (Developing Maritime Safety Culture) is to look at how the ISM Code has influenced the safety culture in the maritime industry. The project strives to find the best practices for shipping companies to improve their operations by implementing and developing their safety management systems. This is an interim report produced in co-operation between workpackage 1 and workpackage 2 of the METKU project. This report presents the results of the interviews carried out in autumn 2008 and spring 2009. In this report, we discuss the results of empiric evaluations concerning the impacts of the ISM Code.
