As obras foram escolhidas por terem presentes dois personagens femininos muito significativos e que causam um impacto e estranhamento tanto nos demais personagens da história como nos próprios leitores. Assim, este trabalho apresenta como base teórica a vida do escritor e o papel da mulher no século XIX, período de produção e publicação dos contos analisados. Essa base teórica nos ajuda a compreender os aspectos semelhantes e contrastivos das personagens se comparadas com as mulheres representadas no século XIX, permitindo assim, a possibilidade de perceber seus reais papeis nas obras. Assim, através das nossas análises, notamos que as figuras femininas criadas nas obras representavam uma motivação para os sentimentos das figuras masculinas. He derived many features from the European Gothic tradition, and utilized motifs such as incarceration, premature burial, and the pathetic fallacy, or the use of external landscape to express or reflect psychological turmoil. Poe&#39;s psychologically intense tales feature narrators whose mental fabric disintegrates before the reader&#39;s eyes. This essay will concentrate upon three such tales: &#39;Berenice&#39; (1835), &#39;Ligeia&#39; (1838), and &#39;The Fall of the House of Usher&#39; (1839). Each of these stories are narratives of obsession and monomania featuring female incarceration and objectification, and the threat of the feminine monstrous. Berenice, Ligiea and Madeline Usher each embody the feminine monstrous in varying ways, a masculine projection of womanhood unrestrained, unsuccessfully repressed by their male counterparts, and thus returning in an act of unheimliche consummation. Berenice symbolizes the vagina dentata whose threat must be removed through dental extraction; Ligeia is an incubus who perverts the Eucharist in order to achieve an act of monstrous metempsychosis; and Madeline acts as both monstrare and monere: as both the warning and the source of impending destruction. The perceived female abandonment and thus betrayal which had become a pattern of Poe&#39;s life was through his fiction able to be halted and contained. The inextricable link between Eros and Thanatos undergirds these stories in which, in a mirror of Poe&#39;s own life, each love object wastes away during the prime of her beauty. This essay discusses the context of male-female relations in Poe&#39;s life and how they impact upon his fiction. Unlike reality, in his tales Poe was able to resurrect the objects of his obsessions, and thus the female figures comprising the monstrous loves of his male protagonists. This paper aims to look at how Poe makes use of the psychodynamics of the characters at the intersection of the (m)other, death and the uncanny. In this sense, typical of Poesque literature is that his work is marked by tales of horror, mystery, the macabre, and morbid imagery; the sense of the uncanny is an indispensable part of a plotline which includes semantic loopholes and narrative ruptures. The unnamed male narrator of the story offers a retrospective account of his past memories from his marriage to Morella up to the death of his daughter, which reveals that this unreliable narrator suffers from a psychic regression by establishing intrasubjectivity with his wife. Using Freudian epistemology, this paper will also discuss the ways in which how the mysterious bond established between this couple generates its uncanny effect. In order to explore the motives for the “dying woman” motif, this study begins by surveying and evaluating prevalent critical approaches to it, including psychological, gender-based, and mythological ones, and concludes that that they are unsatisfactory. It proceeds to describe Poe’s philosophical beliefs and analyzes each of the dying woman tales in the light of those principles, comparing and contrasting them to reveal patterns of characterization and plot that indicate underlying symbolism. Following this analysis, prior philosophical readings of the tales are summarized, criticized, and distinguished from the proposed interpretation. This thesis concludes that the best approach to interpreting the dying woman motif is a philosophical one based on Poe’s metaphysics. The proposed approach construes each dying woman as a symbol of the male protagonist’s body or his soul. Where the woman represents the soul of the protagonist, he represents the body; where the woman represents the body of the protagonist, he represents the soul. In each of the dying woman tales, when body and soul are estranged, both sicken and may die. This pattern evinces an interlocking system of allegories that symbolizes one of the main tenets of Poe’s philosophy—i.e., the interdependence of matter and spirit. While prior interpretations of the dying woman tales reveal intriguing, but often morbid, emotional patterns linking Poe and his tales, they are unsatisfactory, because they fail to take account of Poe’s emphatically wholesome metaphysical beliefs. The Romantic writer&#39;s short tragic life was governed by his Oedipus complex and a strong death drive as the result of his traumatic experiences at an early age. He witnessed his mother&#39;s battle with tuberculosis, which was followed by her death. Throughout his entire life, he has searched for a mother figure. In his works, Poe revives his mother in his portrayals of female characters in the forms of vampires. These characters and all their experiences in his writings appear as uncanny reflections from his unconscious, which he had a strong grasp on long before Sigmund Freud researched and theorized these terms. Resulting from a strong death wish, Poe&#39;s narrators, who are mere reflections of himself, create dark, tomb-like settings where they isolate themselves from reality or consciousness, focusing on the female vampire figures who they admire. However, these figures also horrify Poe as they are the embodiments of death itself. In creating these undead women, Poe expresses his strong desire to reunite with his dead mother and endeavors to uncover the link between life and death, a secret that the female holds.
