Older adults often struggle with mobility issues, which increases their risk of injury from falls and other problems. Dancing has the potential to be a physically stimulating activity that may be tailored to older individuals’ ages, physical conditions, and cultural preferences. The study aimed to determine whether dancing programs can improve older adults’ physical and mental health by using technology. Sixty women were divided into two groups at random: a dance group (N = 33; mean age 62.24) and a dance group using technology (N = 27, mean age 67.37). The intervention lasted six months and was performed twice a week for 75-min sessions. Dances were chosen from all over Greece. Participants’ physical and cognitive status was evaluated before and after the intervention. As creative director of the project and the Together We Dance film, I met with approximately 20 dancers once a week for 10 weeks with the aim of dancing together and sharing movement explorations to create an online Zoom film. The sessions were split evenly into a) learning contemporary dance technique, and b) executing creative movement tasks. The latter being the method for generating movement material to be used in the film. The project was made possible through funding from the New South Wales Government to combat social isolation for seniors during Covid-19. 1 In this short viewpoint essay, I discuss what dance looks like during Covid-19 and how dance continues to thrive in an online digital format. The research approach employed interviews to gain insights into participants' use of SSTs and their exercise practices, in order to start establishing ways in which dance can be re/incorporated into people's lives through the design of appropriate SSTs. Findings from this study highlight the significant opportunity to further explore how the properties of music and dance can be integrated into the design of new SSTs. Literature suggests dance could be a beneficial exercise format for many people and self-service technology abounds for exercise but is often not used consistently. Our interview study asked participants about dance-based exercise and SSTs for exercise and showed that there is an opportunity to design SSTs to help people access dance-based exercise. SSTs should help people learn dance, build confidence, and dance alone or with others. The design of Digital Musical Instruments (DMIs), however, has generally been driven by idiosyncratic artistic concerns, Western art music and dance traditions of expert performance, and short-lived interactive art installations engaging a broader public of musical novices. These DMIs rarely engage with the problems of on-going use in musical communities with existing performance idioms, repertoire, and social codes with participants representing the full learning curve of musical skill, such as social dance. Our project, Interactive Tango Milonga, an interactive Argentine tango dance system for social dance addresses these challenges in order to innovate connection, the feeling of intense relation between This paper takes a Research through Design methodological approach to making such an object, RepMoves, with a purpose to explore its use and usefulness and demonstrate how new knowledge can arise while exploring and experimenting with design objects. In this paper, RepMoves is used to address rhythmic and repetitive bodily interaction with music as a welfare technology concept for senior citizens with cognitive difficulties related to the onset of Alzheimer's disease, and in one example, an individual with Parkinson.
