this paper we describe a user-centered approach to designing and evaluating a socially interactive mobile game for the elderly. The objective of the game is to encourage the elderly to socially engage amongst themselves and to make the time that they spend in the community center more enjoyable. The design of the game, known as Walk 2 Win was done for and with the elderly. Two levels of the game (easy, difficult) across two modes (single, multi player) were evaluated with the elderly in a community center over two sessions. Our results show that senior citizens are keen to play simple games having uncomplicated rules as long as they can customize the game according to their whims. Their preference lies in playing games that are enhancements of existing games that they usually play. It was found that the elderly expressed a strong preference and interest to build a team, with for example their grand children. Additionally it was revealed that games for the elderly should incorporate everyone, regardless of gender or their role in the game. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in the last ten years the elderly population increased 47,8% while the increasing proportion in the overall population was 21,6%. This fact raises the need for new forms of leisure and entertainment for this audience. Casual games on smartphones constitute an option for them. This paper presents the results of a usability evaluation of casual games for smartphones, considering the elderly. Each elderly who participated in the evaluation was asked to play five casual games installed on a smartphone and also to answer questionnaires. The contents of these questionnaires were based on a set of heuristics, obtained by the analysis and organization of guidelines collected from the literature, as well as other issues proposed by the authors. This study aimed to evaluate whether the set of used heuristics is valid to assess the usability of casual games on mobile device, focusing on the elderly. In Brazil, it is known that a small part of the elderly has access to computers, and that a larger part already uses mobile phones. Therefore, we carried out a survey to identify the features that serious mobile games should have, so that older people could feel pleasure and desire to use them. This survey was based on a literature review and also on a case study with a group of seniors who evaluated five serious games for smart phones.
