The research approach employed interviews to gain insights into participants\u0026amp;#39; use of SSTs and their exercise practices, in order to start establishing ways in which dance can be re/incorporated into people\u0026amp;#39;s lives through the design of appropriate SSTs. Findings from this study highlight the significant opportunity to further explore how the properties of music and dance can be integrated into the design of new SSTs. Literature suggests dance could be a beneficial exercise format for many people and self-service technology abounds for exercise but is often not used consistently. Our interview study asked participants about dance-based exercise and SSTs for exercise and showed that there is an opportunity to design SSTs to help people access dance-based exercise. SSTs should help people learn dance, build confidence, and dance alone or with others. SSTs could facilitate movement and increase engagement with physical activity whilst addressing issues around logistics, confidence and dance knowledge and Morris</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In this article, I draw critical attention to the assistive mobility devices that individuals who are differently bodied often use in dance and suggest that the dance genre presents the opportunity for reimagining the technological possibilities of these devices and creating more diverse repertoires. As an intervention and example, I describe the design, development, and implementation of an innovative wheelchair for dance with qualitative research data collected from six wheelchair users who experimented in the chair under a study approved by an institutional review board. Further, based on practitioner experience in the field, I discuss embodiment techniques for assistive devices as a focused part of dance training, specifically important for dancers with disabilities who use devices as bodily movement extensions. Previous research has quantitatively measured elements of fitness devices such as effectiveness and reliability, however, there has been a lack of research exploring people’s experiences of using these devices. Therefore, in this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirteen adults (eleven females, two males) aged 24-60 years old to explore their experiences of using these devices. Four themes were identified: 1) Part of the individual, 2) Monitoring and validating health conditions, 3) Like a personal trainer and 4) Competition: with yourself and others. Whilst experiences of using fitness devices were mainly positive, there is potential for these devices to lead to a range of negative emotions. The importance of setting realistic and appropriate goals is highlighted to avoid potentially negative implications of not meeting personal targets. Older adults often struggle with mobility issues, which increases their risk of injury from falls and other problems. Dancing has the potential to be a physically stimulating activity that may be tailored to older individuals’ ages, physical conditions, and cultural preferences. The study aimed to determine whether dancing programs can improve older adults’ physical and mental health by using technology. Sixty women were divided into two groups at random: a dance group (N = 33; mean age 62.24) and a dance group using technology (N = 27, mean age 67.37). The intervention lasted six months and was performed twice a week for 75-min sessions. Dances were chosen from all over Greece. Their study states that &quot;current wearable trackers offer significant potential with regard to behavioural change techniques relevant to uptake by all populations&quot; (ibid). The aforementioned paper and remark by Mercer and his co-authors (2016) is reinforced as a vital area of research as Mercer mentions Chuah, Rauschnabel, Krey, Nguyen, Ramayah (&amp;) Lade (2016:276) who say that &quot;[a]lthough still in the early stages of diffusion, smart watches represent the most popular type of wearable devices. Yet, little is known about why some people are more likely to adopt smart watches than others.&quot; As part of a master&#39;s thesis, using Engestrom&#39;s second generation Activity theory (1983) we examined how wearable fitness devices influence and support a number of users&#39; behaviour. This was done in an attempt to uncover the underlying user affordances and patterns of behaviour that emerge when people interact with wearable fitness devices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 participants. These were coded and thematically analysed using Atlas Ti through the lens of Activity Theory. Several themes were identified as a result of analysing and coding participant interviews. The focus of the study attempted to gain an understanding through the study of artefacts and tools, of how human action is influenced by and inseparable from a mediated relationship between artefacts or tools and the related components within an activity system. Collected interview data was subsequently further cleaned and developed to a point where participant responses were mapped according to various Activity Theory criteria. This enabled us to identify redundancies by filtering concepts through Activity Theory, which also enabled the identification of tensions and contradictions within the various activity systems.
