Lowest concentration of the extract, which inhibits any visual microbial growth after treatment with p-iodonitrotetrazolium violet, was considered to be minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Water extracts of Acacia nilotica, Justicia zelanica, Lantana camara and Saraca asoca exhibited good activity against all the bacteria tested and the MIC was recorded in range of 9.375-37.5 microg/ml and 75.0-300.0 microg/ml against the bacterial and fungal pathogens, respectively. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of different plant extracts. The antimicrobial activities of some plant species (Phyllanthus emblica, Tinospora cordifolia, Eclipta alba, and Cassia occidentalis) extracts were evaluated against four bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli) by the disc diffusion method. Phyllanthus emblica and T. cordifolia had better activity against all the tested organisms compared to other plant extract fractions. Aqueous fraction of C. occidentalis and P. emblica showed high activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacteria. n-Hexane fraction of T. cordifolia showed high activity against E. coli (162 In the present study, five indigenous plants of Assam namely Oldenlandia corymbosa, Ricinus communis, Lpomea aquatica, Xanthium strumarium, Mentha piperita were analyzed for various Phytochemicals present and their antimicrobial activity. Methods: Phytochemical screening tests was conducted for five plant species and found that extract contains a variety of Phytochemicals like saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides and reducing sugars and among which there is higher level of precipitation for phenol and flavonoids. As they are essential source of antimicrobial agents against pathogens, their extract were tested for its antimicrobial activity by well diffusion method using Nutrient agar against human pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli. Results: The study plant extract of Xanthium strumarium(leaves, roots) and Mentha piperita(stem) had shown a strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and the plant extract of Ricinus communis(leaves ,stem, roots), Lpomea aquatica (stem)had shown antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Oldenlandia corymbosa hadn't shown antimicrobial activity for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
