Hoy, catorce años después, todos esos interrogantes siguen en pie en mayor o menor medida, especialmente la cuestión principal: ¿vale realmente la pena adoptar un enfoque comunicativo en el aula de lengua extranjera?, esto es: ¿podremos demostrar que los resultados superan a los obtenidos con los puntos de vista y procedimientos que éste ha desterrado? Todavía nos queda algo de sensatez, y por lo tanto no será éste el problema que intentemos resolver aquí. Nuestro interés está dirigido a un objeto muchísimo más simple: los materiales que sirven de base a la enseñanza y que, por lo tanto, podemos considerar exponentes privilegiados de aquellos principios y criterios que informan la especificidad del aula comunicativa. Aun admitiendo la extraordinaria importancia del uso efectivo que el profesor pueda hacer de esos materiales, no cabe duda que ellos deberían proporcionar el marco adecuado para esa administración, y en este sentido, responder al nombre de "comunicativos". Nuestra experiencia, en el terreno de la enseñanza del español, nos dice sin embargo que viejos modos informan todavía, sin justificación suficiente, un número considerable de textos que se anuncian "comunicativos", en tanto que aquellos efectivamente comprometidos con el enfoque ofrecen versiones particulares y realmente diversas de cómo acometer el diseño de unidades. Todo esto quiere decir que posiblemente no tengamos disponibles los instrumentos necesarios para dar respuesta a las preguntas citadas hasta que determinemos en qué consiste exactamente diseñar y administrar de un modo comunicativo actividades de clase: qué principios y procedimientos intervienen en el proceso, cuáles de ellos son imprescindibles y cuáles auxiliares, de qué modo pueden completarse o resultar contradictorios, en qué medida favorecen los mecanismos psicológicos de adquisición y aprendizaje consciente, qué promueve, en fin, lo que entendemos por una enseñanza comunicativa efectiva y qué la entorpece. Lo hace a través de un ejercicio de escritura y edición, nunca como mera transcripción. Realicé diversas ponencias en las que propuse un sistema de dictado por voz que me permitía exactamente eso: transcribir mi exposición oral a texto digital. El texto resultante era una masa informe y relegada a un segundo plano, dada la presencia ineludible de un cuerpo que habla.
