He will come and destroy <Fr><i>those</i><FR> husbandmen, and will let the vineyard to others.<Fr><p> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><FR>And have ye not read this scripture, "The stone, which the builders refused, is become the head of the corner:<Fr><p> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><FR>this was from the Lord, and it is marvellous in our eyes."<Fr><p> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And they sought to lay hands on Him, but they were afraid of the people; (for they knew that He spake the parable against them) and they left Him, and went away.<p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">Paying Taxes to Caesar<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/22.htm#15">Matthew 22:15–22</a>; <a href ="../luke/20.htm#19">Luke 20:19–26</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they send to Him some of the pharisees, and of the Herodians to insnare Him in <i>his</i> discourse: <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and these, when they came, said to Him, Master, we know that thou art a man of truth, and carest for no man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to pay tribute to Cesar, or not? should we give, or should we not give? <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But He knew their hypocrisy, and said to them, <FR>Why do ye tempt me? bring me a penny, that I may see <Fr><i>it.</i> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So they brought <i>one:</i> and He saith to them, <FR>Whose <Fr><i>is</i><FR> this image and inscription?<Fr> And they said Cesar's. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Jesus answered and said unto them, <FR>Render <Fr><i>then</i><FR> unto Cesar the things that are Cesar's, and to God the things that are God's.<Fr> And they marvelled at Him.<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">The Sadducees and the Resurrection<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/22.htm#23">Matthew 22:23–33</a>; <a href ="../luke/20.htm#27">Luke 20:27–40</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then come the sadducees to Him, who say there is no resurrection; <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and they asked Him, saying, Master, Moses, in his writings tells us, if any one's brother die, and leave a wife, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife and died and left no seed; <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and the second took her, and died, and he left <i>no</i> seed neither; and the third likewise. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And <i>all</i> the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all died the woman also. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>In the resurrection therefore, when they rise again, whose wife shall be of them; for <i>all</i> the seven had her to wife? <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And Jesus answering said unto them, <FR>Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, nor the power of God?<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels in heaven.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>But as to the dead, that they are raised, have ye not read in the book of Moses, how God spake to him in the bush, saying, I <Fr><i>am</i><FR> the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: therefore ye do greatly mistake.<Fr><p> <A name="29"></a><p class="hdg">The Greatest Commandment<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/22.htm#34">Matthew 22:34–40</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And one of the scribes, who heard them disputing, seeing that He answered them well, came to <i>Him</i> and asked Him, Which is the chief commandment of all? <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And Jesus answered him, <FR>The first of all the commandments <Fr><i>is,</i><FR> "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is <Fr><i>the</i><FR> one Lord,<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:" this is the first <Fr><i>or chief</i><FR> commandment,<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>and the second <Fr><i>is</i><FR> like <Fr><i>it, even</i><FR> this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:" there is no other commandment greater than these.<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And the scribe said unto Him, Truly, Master, thou hast spoke <i>exceeding</i> well; for there is one God, and there is no other beside Him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love <i>his</i> neighbour as himself, is more than all whole-burnt-offerings and sacrifices. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And Jesus seeing that he answered discreetly, said to him, <FR>Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.<Fr> And no one dared any more to put questions to Him.<p> <A name="36"></a><p class="hdg">Whose Son Is the Christ?<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/22.htm#41">Matthew 22:41–46</a>; <a href ="../luke/20.htm#41">Luke 20:41–44</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And Jesus spake and said, <i>as He was</i> teaching in the temple, <FR>How do the scribes say, that the Christ is the son of David?<Fr><p> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>for David himself said by the holy Spirit, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool.<Fr><p> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/12-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>So that David himself calleth Him Lord: how then is He his son?
