It is my contention, however, that healthcare modeled on this interpretation occludes and, ultimately, misrepresents essential dimensions of our experience. In this chapter, I will focus specifically on the theme of space to identify problems that arise from isolating the presumed \u0026amp;quot;medical\u0026amp;quot; element from other aspects of our experience. Though our spatial environments are not typically included in medical analyses, I will argue on the contrary that effective healthcare requires that we take into account the inherent spatiality of our experience. I will identify three levels of human spatial experience-the environmental, the peripersonal, and the personal-and, drawing from phenomenological theory and research as well as field research in nursing, medicine, and psychology, I will argue that issues of health arise at each of these spatial levels. In short, this chapter fleshes out the implications of place and space in our \u0026amp;quot;existential health,\u0026amp;quot; and argues that the situated and relational notion of \u0026amp;quot;being-in-the-world\u0026amp;quot; can serve as helpful corrective for some of the reductive approaches to health often found in contemporary Western medicine.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Kirsten Jacobson"}],"contributor":[],"dateCreated":"2019-11-16","dateModified":"2019-11-16","datePublished":"2017-01-01","headline":"The Living Arena of Existential Health: Space, Autonomy, and Embodiment","inLanguage":"en","keywords":["Space and Place","Health Care","Phenomenology","Existential Therapy","Phenomenology of Space and Place","Spatiality","Nursing Research","Existentialism","Space and Spatiality","Existential Health"],"locationCreated":null,"publication":"Place and Phenomenology (Ed. emotion, practice, politics, moral exhortation – is a starting point for critical geographies that cut across diverse fields of interest. Whilst, conventionally, care remains predominantly associated with systems of social support and health care, intellectual engagements with feminist theory, moral geographies, post-colonial theory and reflections on academic practice have all mobilised explorations of care as a central focus. Care, it seems, affords geographers a richness of possibilities through which to critically engage with a range of politically charged discourses. The papers in this special issue focus on critically engaging the trajectory of public discourse which increasingly privileges embodied individuals as primary sites for agency, responsibility and wellbeing as expressed through a logic of autonomy and choice (Mol, 2006). This trajectory is often exclusively attributed to the emergence of a dominant neoliberal politics (Miller and Rose, 2008) but it has diverse roots, some of much longer duration, including classical liberalism and conservative politics (Staeheli and Brown, 2003), but also in working class solidarity and resistance in the face of imposed values (Fox and Smith, 2011). Within this trajectory, new technologies, whether biomedical or discursive, appear to afford new possibilities for self-actualisation but must also intersect with the histories of existing material, moral and ideological landscapes. This intersection of landscapes, which allows for inequality and exclusion coupled with a trajectory that privileges a logic of individual autonomy and choice, may erode even the most limited and bounded spaces for care.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Space, Place, and Hermeneutics, 2017</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This essay explores the ways in which hermeneutic philosophy has shaped current research on the body. Using the experience of health and illness to frame the discussion and drawing on major figures such as Wilhelm Dilthey, Hans Georg-Gadamer, and Martin Heidegger as well as a number of contemporary theo-rists, the aim of the essay is to show how hermeneutics challenges core naturalistic assumptions we have about the body by bringing our attention to the situated place of the body as it is lived. By focusing on the &#39;lived-body&#39; (Leib) rather than the &#39;corporeal body&#39; (Körper), hermeneutics illuminates the tacit, situated understanding we have of the world, how the experience of illness can shatter this understanding and transform our self-interpretations, and the extent to which our bodies and their various ailments make sense to us only through the public meanings we give to them. In 1986, Hans Georg-Gadamer published a short essay entitled &#39;Bodily Experience and the Limits of Objectification&#39; describing the ways in which modern science and the practice of medicine in particular have resulted in, what he calls, a &quot; violent estrangement &quot; (1996, 70) from ourselves as situated and embodied beings. Gadamer&#39;s aim in this essay is to articulate the inseparability of the &#39;lived-body&#39; (Leben) from &#39;life&#39; (Leib) and suggests that modern medicine, rooted as it is in the methodological assumptions of natural science, operates under an objectifying framework that is fundamentally incapable of seeing this connection. By bringing a &quot; hermeneutic awareness &quot; (1996, 71) to the phenomenon of embodiment, Gadamer not only attempts to identify the boundaries or limits of objectification in medicine but also offers a robust, experiential account of &#39;what it means&#39; and &#39;what it feels like&#39; to be ill. In this chapter, I try to show how Gadamer, along with a number of key figures in hermeneutic philosophy, has had a significant impact on the ways in which we understand the situated experience of our own bodies and how this understanding challenges a number of core assumptions in mainstream medical practice.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;A Hermeneutics of the Body and Place in Health and Illness&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53211053,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/33116357/A_Hermeneutics_of_the_Body_and_Place_in_Health_and_Illness&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/33116357/A_Hermeneutics_of_the_Body_and_Place_in_Health_and_Illness"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="950829" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/950829/Everyday_spaces_of_mental_distress">Everyday spaces of mental distress</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="775848" href="https://uel.academia.edu/IanTucker">Ian Tucker</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Theorising psychological activity as a spatial product appears a logical extension of moves in social theory to emphasise the role of space and place in the consideration of experience. Catalysed by turns in social and human geographies to highlight the role of space and location in constituting psychological activity, various forms of the ‘spatialisation of experience’ have emerged (e.g. Middleton &amp; Brown, 2005; Thrift, 2008). In this paper I will follow this theoretical direction in relation to the underlying destabilisation of everyday life that emerges as a product of theoretical formations that emphasise the fluidity of space. More specifically, I will take the example of the home as a central space in the ongoing activity of people with enduring mental distress. Forging a theoretical line that takes in geographies of mental health, the home, and finally the work of Gilles Deleuze around ‘repetition’ and ‘habit’, I will analyse the role of home spaces in everyday life. Key here is a concern regarding the impact of theoretical emphases on continuity, mobility and instability on understandings of the everyday lives of mental health service users. This includes addressing conceptualisations of the home space, alongside the activities of the people who occupy, and hence co-make, such spaces. The article concludes by framing ‘spatial habituation’ of the everyday as central to creating a perceivable stability, analysis of which can aid understanding of the challenges facing people suffering with mental distress.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Everyday spaces of mental distress&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:5811048,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;doc&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/950829/Everyday_spaces_of_mental_distress&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/950829/Everyday_spaces_of_mental_distress"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="40318072" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/40318072/healing_spaces_the_science_of_place_and_well_being">healing spaces the science of place and well-being</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="126011461" href="https://uniandes.academia.edu/JuanNicol%C3%A1sBarreraGomez">Juan Nicolás Barrera Gomez</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;healing spaces the science of place and well-being&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:60559928,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/40318072/healing_spaces_the_science_of_place_and_well_being&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/40318072/healing_spaces_the_science_of_place_and_well_being"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:61237901,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:61237901,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_61237901" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
